The Juniors were also handicapped by the absence of some players on the same day for their Cup date against Swindon Town at Chadwell Heath. In their case they found top-of-the-table opponents far too strong, and were comprehensively eliminated by a 3-0 score-line.

CHELSEA

Vaughan, Seymour, Dixon (Wilson), Cornwell, Ampofo G., Cowell, Donald, Burns, McNeil, Cottee, Smith M.

There is a close contest between the top five clubs in the table. The Hammers are the only unbeaten side, but dropped a home point against lowly Chelsea last Saturday with a 1-1 draw, after a rather below-par performance. Micky Burns scored ours.

Hunter, Warmington, Dixon, Beckett, Ampofo G., McNeil, Whitehorn, Charlton, Pegram, Whitehead, Seymour

The Juniors sustained a 0-3 reverse against Spurs on Dec. 6 at Cheshunt. On paper it appears a bad result, but alternative calls meant us fielding an XI below the usual average strength.

Collins, Warmington, Cowell, Parris, Ampofo G., Hills, Wilson, Thompson, McNeil, Smith M., Whitehead

Although being short of some of their regular line-up due to senior calls, our Juniors accomplished one of their best performances this season by winning 2-0 at Swindon to open up a gap at the head of the table. Aston Thompson and Paul Wilson were our scorers.

BRENTFORD
Chiswick
6 - 1 (Ampofo 2, Cottee 2, Burns, Smith)
7 February 1981

Hunter, Burns, Warmington, Parris, Ampofo G., Thompson, Charlton, Wilson, Whitehead, Cottee, Smith M.

Our Juniors were deprived of their home fixture on Jan. 31 by unusual circumstances. The Bristol Rovers team was held up for about an hour in a traffic jam on the Chiswick flyover, and the match had to be called off because of the delay. We offered to play in the afternoon instead of the morning, but Rovers were apprehensive of fog conditions for the homeward journey.

The away match v Brentford at Chiswick was more-or-less-settled by half-time. Four goals for us in the first half left the Bees with but little to do except keep the score down. They held us to two more, and scored one themselves, but the 6-1 score-line enabled us to draw further ahead of our nearest rivals in the table. Gerhard Ampofo and Tony Cottee scored two apiece ; Mick Burns and Martin Smith made up the half-dozen.

Crystal Palace have withdrawn their Junior team from the Second Division and their record has been expunged. We had played them once, drawing 4-4 at home. Unfortunately, the cancellation has necessitated us revising our goalscorers list.

14 February 1981

Collins, Warmington, Cowell, Thompson, Cornwell, Ampofo G., Parris, Charlton, Wilson, McNeil, Cottee (Harper)

Hunter, Burns, Cowell, Ampofo G., Cornwell, Donald, Kelly, Dickens, Charlton, Cottee, Parris

Our Juniors played their "away" fixture against Chelsea at Chadwell- Heath on Feb. 21. They did better than their seniors on an adjoining pitch, beating the Young Blues by 5-0 after leading by a single goal at half-time. Alan Dickens netted a hat-trick, Alfie Charlton and George Parris one each.

BRISTOL ROVERS

9 - 2 (Cottee 4, Charlton 2, Dickens 2, Cornwell)
25 February 1981

Collins, Burns, Cowell, Cornwell, Ampofo G., Donlad, Kelly, Dickens, Charlton, Cottee, Wilson

We had a re-arranged match against Bristol Rovers on Wednesday 25 Feb. at Chadwell Heath; the game was postponed on the original date owing to Rovers running into a traffic jam. This time they experienced another set-back, losing 9-2 in a one-sided contest where Tony Cottee netted four goals. Alfie Charlton and Alan Dickens each scored twice with John Cornwell making up the total.

CAMBRIDGE UNITED

The Juniors took the field against Peterborough United at Chadwell Heath on April 18, anticipating they required a win to assure themselves of the championship. They duly succeeded by 3-0, Tony Cottee scoring twice and a 'Boro defender once on our behalf. However, unknown to our youngsters, Oxford United had been defeated on the preceding Thursday, so the Hammers were already champions "by default." Nevertheless, it was a fine performance by our lads, and we congratulate them accordingly.
