1973-74 South East Counties League (Div 2)

Each club will meet the others on a quartet of occasions in the tournament, at the end of which a further decision will be made regarding the remainder of the season. By then, it may be that the difficulties brought about by the raising of the school leaving age will have been resolved.

After prolonged discussions, four clubs have signified their intention to field junior teams in the Second Division this season.

The Hammers' under-16 1/2 XI visited Southend United Juniors and won by 4-1, scoring three times in the last quarter-hour.

A goal in 20 seconds put us ahead against Watford Juniors and we got another six minutes later. This fly start put a runaway win on the cards, but the opposition rallied well to hold us to that margin at the final whistle.

Against Chelsea Juniors at Chadwell Heath our under-16's found themselves in arrears at half time. The three goals that they scored after the interval were sufficient, however, to gain both the points by a 3-1 margin.

As Southend United had no Division I fixture last Saturday they included six of their younger apprentices in the team that opposed our all-amateur Juniors on their ground at Wellstead Gardens. The Shrimpers held our lads to 1-1 in the first half, but the Hammers played extremely well to win by 3-2 and strengthen their hold on top place in the table.

The Junors sustained their first defeat when they lost at Watford. We were level at half-time, each side scoring once, but the Hertfordshire lads got two in the second half to emerge as 3-1 victors.

Another defeat toppled us from the head of the table, with our conquerors Chelsea Juniors taking over the leading position on goal average, thanks to their 3-0 success. The Blues were one up at the interval and ended as worthy winners.

The match versus Chelsea Juniors at Chadwell Heath was more to our advantage than the 0-3 defeat at their hands a week earlier. On this occasion both sides netted a goal in the second half, and the 1-1 draw just about summed up the game.

As we had no Division One fixture on this date, we were able to include seven apprentices in the Junior line-up, and this helped us to leap back to the top of the table by crushing Watford Juniors at Chadwell Heath with a "pontoon winning" score of 11-0. We need hardly add that as a contest it was one-sided.
