The first of our encounters with senior clubs was against Portsmouth at Fratton Park on July 30. We had much the better of the first half, and two goals from David Cross gave us an interval lead. Pompey had already played a couple of fixtures, and they combined well in the later stages to make it 2-1 at the final whistle. The attendance was 6,100.

Two days later we visited Southend United at Roots Hall. It was not so good a game as the former one, but filled its purpose by providing more match practice. The Shrimpers took the lead in the first half, and Geoff Pike levelled the scores after the interval.

Tennant - Caledonian Cup Tournament

(3 - 5 August 1979)

Fifteen players plus officials were in the party which left Heathrow on the morning of Friday 3 August; after an easy flight they arrived around midday at their hotel in Erskine on the Clyde.
The playing squad consisted of; Paul Allen, Dale Banton, Billy Bonds, Phil Brignull, Trevor Brooking, Paul Brush, David Cross, Bobby Ferguson, Pat Holland, Billy Jennings, Frank Lampard, Billy Lansdowne, Alvin Martin, Phil Parkes and Geoff Pke.
We were short of Alan Devonshire due to injury. Manager John Lyall was absent on 'transfer business,' so Ernie Gregory took charge of the team, accompanied by Albert Walker and Rob Jenkins. Three Directors made the journey over the Border - Messrs. W.F. Cearns (Vice-Chairman) B.R. Cearns and J. Petchey.
Friday evening's tournament schedule began with Kilmarnock defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Our opening match against Rangers followed the Kilmarnock, Brighton game and brought a goal each side in the first 17 minutes. Rangers scored with a tremendous 25-yarder by Watson after 14 minutes, but we were on terms against as Billy Jennings diverted a Trevor Brooking's pass which followed a left-flank run. The 10,000 attendance continued to enjoy some good soccer; but although the Hammers contributed their fair share, it was the Scots who went in with a half-time lead, a long ball over our defence being headed home a five yards' range by Smith. Rangers struck again two minutes after the rsumption. Smith netting his second with a left-foot shot which found the net from the corner of the penalty-box. They hit the upright soon after this, but suuddenenly found themselves pulled back to a one-goal margin. Dale Banton making his first full senior appearance back-headed Paul Brush's centre and David Cross finished off the move. We persisted until the final whistle, and Billy jennings had two good efforts forestalled by the home 'keeper. Overall, it was a worthy performance and we were generally pleased.

Rngers had another game the following afternoon, and several of our party went to Hampden Park to see them defeat Celtic 3-1 in the final of the Drybrough Cup. It was an experience to be at one of these traditional local derbies.
