THE PRACTICE MATCHES
There was surprisingly good attendances at both our pre-season trial games and several charities will accordingly benefit from the gate receipts. These two trials gave us the opportunity of testing four close-season captures, in addition to renewing acquaintance with our other players. Whilst it is still too early to fully judge the value of our new talent, there was indications that they will add strength to our XI's.
It is not generally known that Derrick Jackman had two days' training before he played in our second trial game and his replacement at half-time was due to a strained back muscle. In consequence we have included him in the 'A' team at Harwich for further training-run before trying him against stronger opposition.

With several Eastern Counties League clubs tied up in cup fixtures, the schedule has been heavily reshuffled, leaving the league table looking decidedly lopsided in the ‘games played’ column. Even so, we’ve managed to keep our “A” team on a fairly full programme, and plans are in place to fill the vacant Saturdays with friendlies against good‑class opposition.
One such outing came against Edgware Town, where we battled our way to a 1–1 draw. John Carroll supplied our goal, rounding off a competitive and worthwhile fixture amid the disruption.
A stop‑start period for the league, but valuable minutes all the same - and a reminder of the squad’s ability to adapt and keep standards high.

In the friendly against Bristol Rovers Reserves at Eastville, nothing quite clicked for us, and the afternoon drifted steadily away. The one bright note came from Dick Dunn, who grabbed our goal - a small consolation, but an encouraging one, as he looks to have shaken off his recent and rather worrying leg trouble.
A forgettable match, but a welcome sign that Dunn is firmly on the mend

With no Eastern Counties League fixture for our “A” Team, a friendly was arranged against Cheltenham Town - who, for good measure, fielded their full Southern League side, currently sitting fourth in the table. Their greater experience ultimately told, and they ran out 4–1 winners.
Even so, the Hammers claimed the finest goal of the afternoon. It came straight from the kick‑off after Cheltenham had scored: a sweeping, first‑time movement involving John Carroll, George Petchey and Charles Streat carved through the entire Town defence, the final pass releasing Jimmy Barrett, who drove home from 20 yards without a single home player laying a foot on the ball.

For almost half an hour the London Boys, driven on tirelessly by Blythe, pounded the Glasgow goal. They swarmed forward, they pressed, they harried - but they simply could not score. And when Glasgow finally broke out, the whole match flipped. London had run themselves dry, and in a devastating 20‑minute spell the Scots struck four times.
If the standard shown by the Glasgow Schoolboys at West Ham on Saturday is anything to go by, Scotland’s future internationals are in safe hands. To most of the 20,000 watching, the scoreline felt upside‑down: London spent a full hour of the 80 minutes camped around the Glasgow penalty area. They did eventually grab two late goals - one a Lawrence penalty for handball, the other from Blythe - but the damage had long been done. Either side of the interval, in two blistering ten‑minute bursts, Glasgow’s inside‑forwards Phinn and Sturgeon carved London apart.
Two things won the match for Glasgow. First, their defence refused to buckle, even as London’s forwards chased the ball with more enthusiasm than cohesion. Second, they had in Phinn and Sturgeon two inside‑forwards who could drop back to help a stretched defence, knit together attacks with real craft, and finish with precision when the moment came. London’s late rally gave the crowd something to cheer, but by then Glasgow had already delivered the decisive blows.
