Rain began to fall just before the kick-off at the Boleyn Ground. The weather, however, improved before long and the Hammers won by 2-0. It was West Ham’s fifth successive victory, and they thoroughly deserved the two points they secured. In the first minute of the game Eccles was almost successful with a brilliant first time shot, but Davis threw himself at the ball, and brought off a wonderful save. Smith took a free kick and landed the ball in the goalmouth, and after Davis had saved from Robson, but had failed to clear effectively, Campbell shot through to give the Hammers the lead in the fifth minute of the game. Eccles got away on the right and finished a clever run with a perfect centre, but Campbell allowed himself to be tackled with the goal almost at his mercy. A few minutes later Hull tried a long range shot, but sent over. After Eccles had been fouled, Carter dropped a free kick in the goalmouth, but the Swans’ custodian got the ball away before Payne could reach it.
Just afterwards Davis did well to save a shot from the left from Robson, and one from Payne went just over. At the other end Reid and Thomas were allowed to get right through but Reid slipped and his shot went yards wide. Payne tricked Morley and sent in a beautiful shot, which Davis did well to save, and a minute later the custodian saved magnificently from Eccles. The Hammers continued to press and the Swans’ defence were given an anxious time. Robson accepted from Campbell, who kicked the ball to him while he was going full length, and beat Davis at short range for the second goal.

West Ham Reserves are now at the head of the London Combination table. They added yet another success to their list of victories when they defeated Portsmouth Reserves at the Boleyn Ground by 5-2. The Hammers were quickly on the aggressive, though Portsmouth launched the first attack. Some neat work by Rutherford on the right nearly resulted in the home side securing a lead in the second minute of the game, but Loughlin was well tackled before he had the chance to shoot. A little later Loughlin sent out to Jackson who cut in from the left and hit the side of the net with a terrific drive. Just afterwards Robson sent in a hard drive which struck the post, and Loughlin took the ball on the rebound and charged it into the net. But the Hammers did not maintain their lead for long.
Some clever passing by the Portsmouth forwards, left Weddle in possession, and he had little difficulty in beating Tate at short range. Early in the second half. Loughlin got near goal but was charged in the back by a defender. The referee awarded a penalty, and Robson took the kick, and sent in a beautiful shot which gave the goalkeeper no chance. A few minutes later Loughlin got a long range pass out to Jackson who sped down the wing and centred on the run for Robson to score with a perfect shot. But Portsmouth were not yet beaten, and their forwards tried hard to get through. A sudden attack from the left saw Mackie score from the resulting centre. Charlton the Portsmouth goalkeeper, was given a busy time, and he saved shots from all angles form the Hammers’ forwards. Eventually Rutherford hooked the ball in from the right and Loughlin headed through. Just before the end the home side attacked strenuously, and the Portsmouth goal was often in danger. Thomas, the visitors’ left back, shot through his own goal in attempting to clear.

Not a blade of grass could be seen except at the four corners on West Ham's enclosure, when the Hammers Reserves defeated Crystal Palace Reserves by 5-0, it was just a sea of mud with an occasional islabd of sawdust.
The wretched state of the ground made accurate passing exceedingly difficult, but the Hammers adapted themselves to the conditions far better than did the Palace men. Despite the superiority of the home side it was the Palace who first came near to scoring. A move by Fletcher on the left saw the ball drop in the goalmouth and Woolford shot from short range, but Baillie saved.
It was not long before the Hammers took the lead. Eccles got the ball out to Johnson who broke right through and turned the ball past the custodian into the net. Jackson put the Hammers further ahead before half time with a rather lucky goal. He received from Hull, and dodging two opponents shot into the far corner of the net. The goalkeeper went full length for the ball, but allowed it to pass under him. Crystal Palace tried hard to reduce the arrears on the restart, and Baillie was given some anxious moments in goal. The dour defence of Smith and Norrington kept them out.
Robson passed to Jackson who sent right across the goalmouth, and the custodian fisted the ball away. As it dropped Loughlin kicked it over his head into the net. It was a really clever effort which throughly deserved the success which crowned it.
Loughlin got right through but was brough down by Holmes and the referee ordered a penalty. Jackson scored from the spot kick with a beautiful shot. Almost immediately, Jackson went right down the wing and sent a perfect pass to Loughlin who scored the Hammers' fifth goal.
