1926-27 London Combination

Before the start of the 1926-27 campaign it was decided to increase the league membership from 12 to 22 clubs and to encourage more clubs from outside the London area to apply. With the increase in membership, each club would now only play each other once, home and away.

HELP WANTED:

This is one of the few campaigns that there is little or no information regarding team line-ups, due to lost records during the Second World War. British Library newspaper archives have not been much help in filling the gaps.

Any help appreciated, contact via the email address on the front page. Thank you.....

The Hammers' Reserves gave Chelsea a very hard fight for London Combination points at Upton park. The Hammers well merited their three goal victory over the Pensioners, though better football would have been seen if the ground had not been in a slippery state.
The first goal came soon after the start of the game, when Horler, the left back, scored from a penalty. The second goal came just after the change of ends, when Dowsey, inside right, sent in a drive that hit the cross-bar and rebounded into the goal. The third accurued in a similar manner when Surtees, inside left, obtained the ball after a scrimmage in front of the goal. The most prominent player in this match was A. Hull, the Ilford amateur, playing centre-half for the home team. his passing was accurate, and well distributed, and he had a great advantage over the Chelsea inside trio when the ball was in the air, through his height. Anndy Wilson the famous Scottish international for the Pensioners, showed all his old skill. and in the second half he frequently had the home defence in a tangle.

High standard of play. Pape scored two goals in the opening 5 minutes. Later Pike made it 3-0 to Fulham but Surtees got one back for the Hammers just before the break.

After half-time Dowsey further reduced the Fulham advantage, Horler then missed a golden opportunity to level, when he failed with a penalty. With 5 minutes to go Hammers drew level through Bishop (his last game in a West Ham shirt) but it wasn't all over for Wolfe put past his own 'keeper' to give the visitors the points.

After defeating the Bees by three clear goals in the previous match, the Hammers again ran up a good score at Upton park on Boxing Day, when they beat Brentford in the return game, by six goals to one.
Kay was out again after his long rest, the Hammers scored two goals in ten minutes, Williams getting the ball in from a corner; and Campbell at centre forward ran through the opposing backs, snapped up a pass from Johnson and beat Collins easily. Anderson scored the only goal for Brentford a few minutes later, Kane going full length in an endeavour to save. Campbell added the third for the Hammers just before half time. Soon after the interval, Campbell scored a clever goal, when he dived to head the ball, which was low over the ground. Williams added the fifth, scoring with a quickly rising shot. It was just before close of play that the sixth was scored by Campbell.

This appeared to be a shock result but a closer examination reveals that this Coventry 'reserve' XI eventually totalled 203 First team appearances in 1926-27. The Hammers on the other hand managed 17 first team appearances of which 13 were claimed by Albert Cadwell.
