A packed 2013/14 saw Lanzini play 41 times in all competitions for River, helping the Buenos Aires club to reach the last-eight of the Copa Sudamericana and attracting the attention of clubs all over the world. It was Al-Jazira who moved for the exciting talent, securing Lanzini’s path to Abu Dhabi, where he became the youngest foreign player to appear in the UAE Arabian Gulf League at the age of 21. Again wearing the No.10 shirt, he scored eight goals in 24 league appearances to help Al-Jazira to finish as league runners-up. At international level, the creative South American has been capped four times by Argentina at U20 level.

The Argentine winger, nicknamed ‘La Joya’ - The Jewel – in his homeland due to his outstanding talent, arrived at the Boleyn Ground on 22 July 2015 on loan from UAE League side Al-Jazira.

Lanzini made an impression in his first steps into European football on 6 August 2015 when he made a scoring debut for the Hammers UEFA Europa League tie at Astra Girugiu. Came off the bench to make his Barclays Premier League bow against Leicester City on 15 August 2015 and scored on his first league start as West Ham won 3-0 at Liverpool on 29 August.

Following an exceptional debut season in east London, the Hammers took up the option to sign the 23-year-old attacking midfielder from the Al-Jazira club on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee. Since then, the diminutive midfielder has enjoyed great highs, including his sensational first season and scoring some unforgettable goals, including hi slast-gasp equaliser at Tottenham Hotspur in 2020/21 and then a superb volleyed finish at Crystal Palace the following campaign, and enduring devasting lows, including a serious knee injury that cost him a place Argentina’s FIFA World Cup finals squad in 2018, before regaining his national team spot and play a key role in West Ham’s success in his last three seasons for the Hammers.

Born in Alcala de Henares, a suburb of Madrid, Pedro Obiang played for local teams CD Avance and AD Naya before catching the eye of heavyweights Atletico Madrid. However, the combative midfielder did not stay at Athletic for long as Italian outfit Sampdoria signed him in 2008 aged just 16. The talented midfielder progressed through the youth ranks before breaking into the first team at 18 years of age and has represented his native Spain at U17, U19 and U21 level.

The Spaniard made his competitive debut against Juventus on 12 September 2010 in a 3-3 draw. One of the star performers for the Italian side in Serie A, and was as member of the side that qualified for the UEFA Europa League. In total, Obiang made over 130 appearances in five seasons for the Il Blucerciatiside.

Obiang joined West Ham United from Sampdoria on a four year deal on 10 June 2015 for an undisclosed fee. The box-to-box midfielder with plenty of experience was signed in the hope he will go on to become a major force in the Premier League. However, he suffered a hamstring injury in pre-season which delayed his start and missed out on six of West Ham’s early season Europa Qualifiers.

The midfielder returned to make his Barclays Premier League debut as a second-half substitute against Leicester City on 15 August 2015, and started in the league for the first time a week later against AFC Bournemouth and made 20 appearances that campaign

The following season he was part of the side which qualified for European football. The midfielder, who has an Italian wife, a Spanish passport and parents who hail from Equatorial Guinea, chose the latter to represent at full international level, for which his first three full caps came during his time with the Hammers.

On the 4 January he won the club’s Goal of the Season for an unstoppable 30-yard drive against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium. His elation turned to despair later that same month when he suffered a ligament tear to his right knee which ruled him out for the remainder of the 2017/18 season and a further spell on the side-lines, leading to talk that a return to Italy was on the cards that summer. He had to wait until 1 September 2018 for his first league start of the campaign and went on to record 29 appearances in all competitions that season.

Having played 116 times in Claret and Blue, and netting three goals, the 27-year-old’s four-year stay in the capital has seen him leave with plenty of good-wishes from the fans, before sealing a £6.1 million switch to Italian side US Sassuolo in Serie A on 24 July 2019.

In August 2021, following test at a hospital in Italy’s Modena province, Obiang was diagnosed with bronchopulmonary disease and as a precaution was prohibited from playing or training for the foreseeable future.
