ABDOULAYE FAYE

Born: 26 February 1978, Dakar, Senegal
Signed: Stoke City

Debut: 16 August 2011, Watford (A)
Last game: 9 April 2012, Birmingham City (H)

Born in Dakar, Abdoulaye Diange-Faye began his career playing for Senegal-based ASEC Ndiambour and Jeanne d'Arc before moving to French football with RC Lens in 2002. Faye made his name with the Pas-de-Calais club and FC Istres before enjoying a successful career in English football with Bolton Wanderers under manager Sam Allardyce in July 2005.
The Senegal international spent two seasons at the Reebok Stadium, appearing in the UEFA Cup and making more than 70 appearances for the Trotters as Allardyce’s side finished eighth and seventh in the Premier League table. When the manager moved to Newcastle United in the summer of 2007, he immediately moved for Faye, with the powerful defender featuring 24 times during his single year at St James’ Park.
Stoke City splashed out £2.25m to snap up the 34-times capped international in August 2008, and Faye repaid the Potters by being voted the club’s Player of the Season in his first year at the club. After an impressive 2009/10 campaign, Faye helped Stoke to reach their first FA cup final in the club’s 148-year history, but sadly did not appear in the final itself before leaving the Britannia Stadium at the expiration of his contract.
On 14 June 2011, Sam Allardyce has made his first foray into the transfer market since taking over as West Ham boss by signing the experienced central defender for a third time. Faye made his Championship debut on 16 August 2011 in a 4–0 away win against Watford. At the end of the season after helping the Hammers to Premier League status, Faye left east London at the end of his one year contract.
The defender joined Football League Championship side Hull City on 20 July 2012 on a one-year deal. Similar to his time with Stoke, Faye helped Hull to their first FA Cup final, and once again he was left out of the starting eleven on the big day. Thirty-six-year-old Fay was released by Hull City at the end of the 2013/14 season. In December 2014, he joined Malaysia Premier League side Sabah FA.

PAPA BOUBA DIOP

Born: 28 January 1978, Dakar, Senegal
Signed: AEK Athens (Greece)
Date: 30 August 2011
Debut: 1 October 2011, Crystal Palace (A)
Last game: 6 April 2012, Barnsley (A)
Appearances: 16
Goals: 1
Released: 30 June 2012
Transferred: Birmingham City
Date: October 2012
Died: 29 November 2020,
Rufisque, Senegal (aged 42)

Born in Dakar, Papa Bouba Diop began his football career with junior side Ndeffann Saltigue before joining ASC Diaraf of the Senegal Premier League in 1996. The defensive midfielder swapped the warm tropical climate for a significant drop in temperature when he spent three seasons in Switzerland. First with third-tier club Vevey Sports and then signing professional for Ligue Nationale A club Neuchatel Xamax where he received his first call-up to the Senegal national squad in 1999 before signing for fellow top-flight club Grasshoppers.
In January 2002 he moved to France and signed for RC Lens of Ligue 1. Diop is perhaps best known for scoring the first goal of 2002 FIFA World Cup against France, which resulted in the 1-0 defeat of the defending world champions and, ultimately their early elimination from the tournament.
After his impressive performances for the Pas-de-Calais side, Diop signed for Fulham and established himself as a Premier League force, earning the nickname ‘The Wardrobe’ for his strong midfield play. After 76 League outings and eight goals for the Craven Cottage side he moved to Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth in 2007. At Fratton Park he helped Pompey win the FA Cup in his first season with the club.
In July 2010, he signed and spent a year in Greece with AEK Athens where he won the Greek Cup and appeared seven times in the UEFA Europa League. At international level, Diop had been an important member of the Senegal squad for a decade, making 63 senior appearances and scoring eleven goals.
On 30 August 2011, West Ham United completed the midfielders free signing on a one-year deal. Standing at 6'5, the imposing Diop became Sam Allardyce's ninth summer signing after completing a successful trial period at Chadwell Heath. Although having secured his services, the Hammers then had to wait until he was granted a work permit at a London hearing.
On 1 October 2011, Diop made his Championship debut against Crystal Palace in a 2-2 draw. Diop scored his first and only goal against Barnsley on 17 December 2011. His goal proved to be the winner in a 1–0 win. Although not a member on the day, Diop celebrated on the pitch with his team-mates that won promotion via the play-off final against Preston North End on 19 May.
On 30 June 2012, after 16 appearances and one goal, Diop was released at the expiry of his contract. Diop retired in January 2013 after a brief spell with Birmingham City.
Aged 42, Diop sadly passed away in Paris on 29 November 2020 following a long illness. On the second anniversary of his death, during the 2022 World Cup, Senegal dedicated their win over Ecudor to the gentle giant.

As a schoolboy, Ravel Morrison rose through the ranks at Manchester United where he was touted as one of the club’s most promising youth talents, but his football career was hindered by disciplinary problems and off-field distractions. Aged 17, Morrison made his Old Trafford first-team debut on 26 October 2010 against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the League Cup, he went on to make a further two appearances in the same competition, before moving to West Ham United for a £650,000 fee on 31 January 2012. Manager Sam Allardyce gave the youngster his Hammers debut coming from the substitute’s bench in the 1-1 Championship draw at Leeds United on 17 March 2012.
Allardyce was keen for him to gain experience of first-team football and loaned him to fellow Championship side Birmingham City on 6 August 2012. Morrison made his Blues’ debut in a League Cup first-round win at Barnet on 14 August 2012 and scored his maiden Football League goal in City's 3-2 home league defeat by Hull City on 17 November 2012. In all, he totalled 30 appearances and three goals for the St Andrews outfit in all competitions.
Returning to east London, Morrison scored his first goal for West Ham United in the 6-2 pre-season win at Cork City on 7 July 2013. The talented player made his first team debut on 24 August 2013 as a second half substitute in a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United. Morrison marked his full debut on 27 August 2013 in the League Cup second round win over Cheltenham Town with his sides winning goal in a 2-1 victory at the Boleyn Ground.
On 15 September 2013, the midfielder started his first Premier League game in a 0-0 draw against Southampton at St Mary's, and scored his first Premier League goal at home in a 3-2 defeat to Everton.
Previously capped by England at U16, U17, and U18 level, Morrison was called up to the England Under-21 squad for games against San Marino and Lithuania, as a Hammer he was awarded a total of 4 caps at that level. On 6 October, he scored West Ham’s third goal in a 3-0 derby win against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. Manager, Sam Allardyce later declared the goal, “That’s a genius goal for me. You’ll struggle to see a better goal than that all season”.
After making his first appearance of the season in the following campaign, on 26 August 2014 in a League Cup defeat to Sheffield United, Morrison joined Cardiff City on a three month loan. Further loan spells followed with Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff City. Whils still on loan with the Bluebirds, West Ham placed Morrison on the transfer list making him available for a nominal fee in the January 2015 transfer window.
In January 2015, it was reported that Morrison had signed a pre-contract agreement to join Lazio on a four-year deal at the end of the 2014/15 season on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling. With the move expected to take place in July 2015, after Morrison's contract with West Ham expires. However, in February, Morrison’s contract with the Hammers was terminated early and the player began training with the Italian giants.
The Lazio move proved fruitless, after making just 4 appearances for the Serie A side he was back in London with another loan period, with Queens Park Rangers once more. From 2017, the maverick player then went on a tour of clubs with limited game time.

ANDY CARROLL

Born: 6 January 1989, Gateshead
Signed: Liverpool (loan)
Date: 30 August 2012
Permanent signing: 19 June 2013

Debut: 1 September 2012, Fulham 2012 (H)

Manchester City (A)
Released: 30 June 2019

Andy Carroll experienced every emotion in Claret and Blue during his seven seasons with the Club, from the highs of scoring hat-tricks, vital goals and the sensational final season at the Boleyn Ground, to the lows of devastating injuries and disappointing defeats.
Carroll burst into the Newcastle United first-team at the age of 17 making his debut as a replacement for future Hammer Nolberto Solano in a UEFA cup victory over Palermo on 2 November 2006, an appearance that made him the youngest-ever player to represent the Tyneside club in Europe.
A six-month loan spell with Championship side Preston North End before returning to St James’ Park and forced his way into the Magpies starting XI, and scored on his full home debut with a towering header against the Hammers in a 2-2 Premier League draw on 10 January 2009.
Completed a record breaking £35m move to Liverpool on 31 January 2010, making him the most-expensive English footballer in history. However, he was unable to fit into new Anfield boss Brendan Rogers’ plans.
Carroll arrived from Liverpool on loan on 30 August 2012 as one of football’s most-feared forwards, making an eye-catching debut in a 3-0 home Premier league victory over Fulham two days later. His outstanding form during his initial loan spell led to an England call-up for the World Cup qualifier against San Marino and a 73rd minute substitution led to his only cap whilst with the Hammers and chants of ‘We want you to stay’ during the final-day 4-2 Premier League win over Reading.
The pony-tailed centre-forward earned a permanent move, only for injuries to restrict Carroll to just 32 appearances over the next two seasons. Having worked hard to return to fitness, he was an important member of Slaven Bilic’s record-breaking squad during the Farewell Boleyn campaign, scoring nine times, including an unforgettable hat-trick against Arsenal. After moving to London Stadium, Carroll scored twice in the official opening fixture against Italian giants Juventus, before netting one of west Ham’s all-time great goals, with a scoring scissor-kick to double the Irons’ advantage in an eventual 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in January 2017.
Older, wiser, fitter and stronger, the striker was still hitting the target after leaving East London in June 2019 for former club Newcastle, West Bromwich Albion, Reading and French sides Amiens and FC Girondins de Bordeaux
