Portuguese international winger who became Alan Curbishley's first signing as West Ham United manager when he moved from Fulham for an undisclosed fee on 5 January 2007. Boa Morte began his professional career with his hometown club, Sporting Lisbon, in 1996, but spent just one season there before moving to England at the age of 19 to join Arsenal in June 1997 for a fee of 1.75million.
In two seasons at Highbury, he made 40 league and cup appearances under Arsene Wenger but, after growing frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities, was allowed to join Southampton in a £500,000 deal in August 1999. After spending just one season with the Saints, he moved to Fulham in a season-long loan deal in the summer of 2000 and helped the Londoners win the old First Division Championship in May 2001, scoring the goal against Huddersfield that clinched promotion to the Premiership, before completing a permanent £1.7million transfer to Craven Cottage that summer.
In the same year he won a call-up to Portugal’s national team, making his international debut in a 4-0 defeat against France, and has since gone on to win 28 caps for his country, scoring one goal. He was a member of the Portuguese squad that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Germany in 2006.
After establishing himself as a firm favourite among the Fulham supporters, Boa Morte was appointed the club’s captain in 2006, and has earned a reputation as one of the Premiership’s most exciting attackers, making 166 appearances and 26 goals.
After completing his move to Upton Park just days after the 2007 January transfer window had opened, Luis made an impressive debut in the FA Cup third round win over Brighton & Hove Albion, creating the first two goals in a 3-0 victory. On 29 July 2009, Boa Morte picked up a serious injury in the pre-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur. West Ham were playing in the Barclays Asia Trophy in Beijing when Boa Morte’s studs stuck in the ground, twisting his knee and suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Boa Morte made his comeback from injury on 13 April 2010, playing 45 minutes in a reserve team 4–1 defeat by Wolves reserves. Making an appearance in the first team for the first time since the end of 2008/09 season he opened the scoring for West Ham against Manchester City in a 1–1 draw on 9 May 2010. It was his first goal for West Ham for over three years.
On 3 August 2011 Boa Morte's contract with the Hammers was cancelled by mutual consent. Later played for Larissa (Greece) and Olando Pirates (South Africa) and Chesterfield. Later went into a coaching career.

Matthew Upson was the last player to wear the No6 shirt before it was retired in memory of the late Booby Moore in summer 2008. In January 2007 with West Ham battling relegation, Upson was snapped up by then manager Alan Curbishley for a reported £6million fee, the 27-year-old England international agreed a four-and-a-half year contract.
Upson was spotted by Luton Town as a youngster and joined the Hatters as a trainee, but made just one senior league appearance for the club - as a 17-year-old against Rotherham United in August 1996 - before Arsenal paid £2million the following year to acquire his services. After waiting patiently for his big chance under Arsene Wenger, the central defender won a Premiership title medal in 2001-02, but continued to find first-team opportunities limited at Highbury, and headed out for loan spells with Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Reading, before Birmingham City paid £1million to make him a permanent signing in January 2003.
The former England under-21 international played a key role as Blues retained their newly-acquired Premiership status at the end of the campaign, and he was then rewarded with a call-up to the full national team, making his debut in a friendly against South Africa in Durban on May 22, 2003. He went on to win seven full caps under Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Sadly, his Hammers debut ended in disappointment, as a calf injury forced him off after just 28 minutes in the 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa on 3 February 2007.
Scored his first goal for the Hammers in a 2-1 triumph over Manchester United at Upton Park in Decembder 2007. After becoming a consistent performer his leadership skills were rewarded with the captaincy in 2009, and following 2009/10 he went on to become the first West Ham player to score at a FIFA World Cup since Geoff Hurst when he netted for England against Germany in South Africa, in total winning 13 Three Lion caps as a Hammers’ player.
Upson departed for Stoke City following the Club’s relegation at the end of the 2010/11, and later enjoyed spells at Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City and MK Dons before retiring from playing in 2016.

FREDRIK LJUNGBERG

Born: 16 April 1977, Vittsjo, Sweden
Signed: Arsenal
Date: 23 July 2007
Fee: Undisclosed
Debut: 11 August 2007, Manchester City (H)
Last game: 26 April 2008, Newcastle United (H)
Appearances: 25/3
Goals: 2
International: Sweden (8 caps)
Released: 6 August 2008
Next club: Seattle Sioounders (USA)

Born in 1977, in Vittsjo, Sweden, Fredrik Ljungberg joined Halmstads at the age of five, and also played several other sports including ice hockey and handball, for which he was called up to the national youth squad.
At the age of 17, he made his senior first division debut against AIK on 23 October 1994 and went on to make 139 appearances - scoring 16 goals - for the club. After winning his first full cap for Sweden against the USA in January 1998, he then starred in Sweden's Euro 2000 qualifier victory over England nine months later. His dazzling performance persuaded Arsene Wenger to splash the cash in a £3m deal and, on 20 September 1998, Ljungberg marked a memorable Highbury debut by stepping off the bench and sealing a 3-0 win against Manchester United with the first of his 72 goals. With the Highbury club he made a total of 216 league and cup appearances – including a Champions League Final against Barcelona in May 2006. The Swedish national captain had also won 67 senior caps and scored 13 goals for his country.
On 23 July 2007, the 30-year-old international made the switch to east London after nine years at Arsenal, having agreed a four-year contract with West Ham United for an undisclosed fee.
The goalscoring midfielder made his Hammers debut on the opening day of the 2007-08 campaign, captaining West Ham in a forgettable 2-0 home defeat to Sven-Goran Eriksson's Manchester City. Ljungberg added to his international appearances with the first of his additional eight caps by scoring in a 3-0 win against Liechtenstein in a European Championship qualifier on 13 October 2007. After seven months at the club, the midfielder finally scored his first goal in Claret and Blue in the home match against Birmingham City on 9 February 2008, putting West Ham 1-0 up, with the game finishing 1-1. Ljungberg also scored away at Sunderland a month later in a 1-2 defeat, being his final goal for the club.
The midfielder was plagued with fitness problems, injuries and a debilitating migraine, as well as missing the final two games of the Premier League season with a rib injury. The unfortunate player would make just 28 appearances in his first and, as it turned out, last season at the Boleyn Ground.
Ljungberg battled back to captain the Swedish national side at the EURO 2008 finals in Austria-Switzerland, winning the last of his 75 caps on 18 June 2008 when the Scandinavian nation was eliminated after the group stage. Later that same month Ljungberg announced his retirement from international football to concentrate on his playing commitments with West Ham United.
However, on 6 August 2008 the Club announced they had reached an agreement with the player to terminate his contract on undisclosed terms with immediate effect. Responding to a newspaper article about the club parting company with the midfielder. The Club said “the termination of Ljungberg’s contract was agreed mutually and was in the best interests of West Ham United and the player. This was a footballing decision based on the fact the 31-year-old midfielder’s first-team chances would have been limited for the new campaign and allows the club to redirect the wage-saving elsewhere.”
Ljungberg stated afterwards: "I gave my all at West Ham and enjoyed my time there but the decision is the best for the both of us. Now, I will take my time to consider my football future."
On 28 October 2008, Ljungberg signed for USA Major League Soccer outfit Seattle Sounders and later traded to Chicago Fire in July 2009; a year later he signed for Glasgow Celtic and saw out his playing days with Shimizu S-Pulse in Japan. Two years later, in July 2014, he came out of retirement to turn out for Indian side Mumbai City FC.
In May 2013, he returned to Arsenal in an ambassadorial role and in 2016 he joined the Gunners Academy coaching their Under-15s and in 2018 as their Under-23 coach. With the sacking of first-team head coach Unai Emery in November 2009, Ljungberg took over as interim manager. After a record of two defeats, three draws and achieved his first and only win, beating West Ham 3-1 before the appointment of Mikel Arteta.

James Tomkins was spotted by West Ham United while playing for Holy Cross FC at the age of seven. The youngster initially joined the Hammers as a striker before becoming a winger and, finally, a centre-back.
On 18 March 2005, during the first team’s half-time break on the Boleyn Ground pitch against Leicester City the highly-rated defender signed scholarship forms for the Youth Academy and later signed his first professional contract in July 2007.
The ball-playing defender had long been considered one of English football's finest prospects. That forecast was recognised at international level and he was capped for England at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 before graduating to the Under-21 side where he featured at the 2009 and 2011 UEFA European U21 Championships.
With injuries to first team regulars James Collins and Daniel Gabbidon unavailable for selection, Tomkins was handed his full West Ham United debut on 22 March 2008 in a 1–1 draw to Everton at Goodison Park. As West Ham's injury list grew he enjoyed an extended run in the first team towards the end of that season and picked up the prestigious ‘Young Hammer of the Year’ award.
The following 2008/09 season he was ruled out of opening three months of the campaign with a knee ligament injury suffered at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals. Returned to action in the Reserve League South at the end of November, he joined for a brief yet successful loan stint at Derby County, making 8 appearances for the Rams before returning to east London to play a pivotal part in the second half of the campaign which included scoring his first goal for the Hammers in the 2-0 home Premier League win over Sunderland on 4 April 2009.
Tomkins began the 2009/10 campaign on West Ham’s substitutes' bench before replacing the departed James Collins in the starting XI and kept his place at the heart of the Hammers defence. His 50th league appearance came in the 1-0 home Barclays Premier League victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on 1 January 2011.
The centre-back was named the SBOBET Player of the Month for August 2011, having scored his first goal of the season in the 4-0 win at Watford on 16 August. Having established himself as a regular first team player, he played a crucial role in the 2011/12 Play-Off winning campaign. In recognition of his outstanding performances he was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year and was voted runner-up Hammer of the Year behind teammate and close friend Mark Noble. He also represented Team GB at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
On 5 July 2016, the popular central defender who had made 243 first team appearances in Claret and Blue joined London rivals Crystal Palace under manager Alan Pardew on an initial five-year deal for a fee of £10 million. His stay lasted eight seasons, in all competitions he made 136 appearances and scored 10 times for the Selhurst Park club before leave the south London side when his contract expired in the summer of 2024. On the 24 March 2025, the 35-year-old announced his retirement from professional football.
