Mark Robson's West Ham United XI kicked-off their pre-season schedule with a 4-1 defeat at National League South side Worthing in West Sussex. On a warm but mercifully breezy afternoon on the south coast, the two squads produced a lively game in the circumstances, with former Academy of Football striker Brad Dolaghan marking his return to Worthing with a second-half hat-trick to inspire the Mackerel Men to victory.

Before Dolaghan was introduced at the break, West Ham went in front on 15 minutes when Regan Clayton and Dan Rigge combined down their left flank before the later cut back for Ryan Battrum, who controlled and fired low between Stacey and the near post.

Moments after a drinks break midway through the second half, Josh Briggs was caught the wrong side and fouled his former Academy teammate inside the West Ham penalty area. The striker, who had rejoined Worthing on Friday, stepped up to score from the spot, sending Fin Hooper the wrong way.

And the former Hammer, who spent last season on the Academy's books, made the game safe with five minutes remaining, racing through and slotting a right-foot shot to Fin Hooper's left and into the bottom corner. There was a chance for Daniel Cummings to mark his first appearance with a goal, but the young Scotsman's shot rolled wide before Dolaghan completed his hat-trick in added time, acrobatically turning Sam Beard's cross inside the far post.

Up against a Fleet side boasting plenty of EFL experience, with the likes of Ben Coker, George Moncur, Max Ehmer and Jake Hessenthaler in their ranks, Mark Robson’s men were given a valuable test against senior opposition in north Kent.

Dan Rigge and Josh Ajala both went close before the break, but ultimately a goal in each half from the hosts’ Lennon Peake and Gene Kennedy gave them the spoils.

West Ham United's 2025/26 pre-season programme began with a 3-1 friendly victory at 27-time Swiss champions Grasshopper Club Zürich. Andy Irving opened the scoring for Graham Potter's men before the break, before Callum Marshall's finish two minutes into the second half put them firmly in control. Although Grasshopper's Jonathan Asp Jensen pulled one back on 66 minutes, Lucas Paquetá had the final word in the closing stages to make sure of victory for the Irons.

The Irons, did not have to wait long to open the scoring, as Irving struck with just 13 minutes on the clock. The Scotland midfielder was teed up by Jarrod Bowen, firing past goalkeeper Justin Hammel from 12 yards with his left foot. Grasshopper had an opportunity to hit back almost instantly, but Saulo Decarli's looping header narrowly cleared Alphonse Areola's crossbar following a long throw-in by Simone Stroscio. The Irons were on top, though, and Bowen fizzed an effort not far over the top just past the half-hour, while Niclas Füllkrug flashed a shot just past Hammel's post.

Potter's men doubled the advantage within two minutes of the restart after Paquetá cleverly flicked the ball through to Marshall. The latter was patient to assess his options before shifting the ball on to his left and firing the ball home by the near post.

New signing El Hadji Malick Diouf was introduced from the bench at the break, and he wasted little time in impressing, using his pace to get the better of Allan Arigoni down the left flank. Diouf almost provided a third on the hour, picking out Tomáš Souček with a pinpoint cross, but the No28 could not force the ball home.

Grasshopper gave themselves hope on 66 minutes thanks to Jensen, who fired beyond Hammers sub goalkeeper Wes Foderingham with a well-taken effort from outside the box, and the hosts had their tails up after the goal with Salifou Diarrassouba sending an effort into the side-netting. West Ham stood firm, though, and made sure of a winning end to their pre-season training camp in the Black Forest when Paquetá was brought down inside the box two minutes from full-time. The Brazil playmaker picked himself up, dusted himself down and made no mistake from the spot to make it 3-1.

Asher Yearwood notched the Magpies’ fourth in the second period before Sean Moore pulled a goal back for the Hammers with a well-placed, left-footed strike from outside the box with eight minutes to play.

West Ham continued to end the game on a positive note and duly got their second through substitute Josh Ajala, who rolled the ball past Harvey Collins in the 90th minute.

West Ham United U21s claimed their first victory of pre-season with a 2-1 win over National League outfit Boreham Wood at Meadow Park.

A strong opening 45 minutes laid the foundations for Mark Robson’s side, with Michail Antonio on the scoresheet twice as he continued his journey back to full fitness following a car accident in December last year.

Our young Hammers started brightly and took an early lead when Antonio stole the ball from Boreham Wood’s last man beating goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore inside four minutes. The Jamaican international added a second midway through the half, meeting Elisha Sowunmi’s inviting cross with a bullet header back across goal to double the advantage.

Boreham Wood halved the deficit shortly after when a misplaced pass from the back allowed Tom Whelan to intercept and Erico Sousa made no mistake with the loose ball, drilling a low effort into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

The Hammers’ appearance at the iconic New Jersey arena will not live long in the memory as Graham Potter’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat by Manchester United in their opening fixture at the 2025 Premier League Summer Series.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes settled the game with a goal early in each half, before West Ham skipper Jarrod Bowen netted an outstanding strike of his own midway through the second. Potter’s team played some attractive football at times and enjoyed nearly 60% possession in the first period, but failed to trouble goalkeeper Altay Bayındır often enough, while the Red Devils created a succession of chances to add to their early lead.

West Ham’s first goal attempt finally arrived on 33 minutes, but James Ward-Prowse’s acrobatic effort was deflected wide. Manchester United continued to threaten, though, and Maximilian Kilman had to block Cunha’s shot, Leny Yoro headed the resulting Fernandes corner powerfully and narrowly wide, and Amad was denied a second by an offside flag after slotting in Manuel Ugarte’s through ball. The Hammers belatedly sprung into life as half-time approached, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jarrod Bowen looking lively. The latter won a corner, James Ward-Prowse delivered it, Nayef Aguerd headed down and Tomáš Souček nodded too close to Bayındır from six yards out.

Manchester United raced out of the blocks at the start of the second half and quickly doubled their advantage. Areola produced two fine saves in the space of 60 seconds, blocking from Fernandes when one-on-one, then tipping away Højlund’s dipping header, only to undo his good work moments later. Dorgu intercepted the Frenchman’s pass and fed his captain, who calmly curled inside the far upright.  Two goals down, West Ham rallied. Bowen fired a first-time shot over from Niclas Füllkrug’s pass before halving his team’s deficit in spectacular style on 63 minutes, collecting Souček’s pass and thumping high past Bayındır with his right foot into the top corner.

The Hammers kept plugging away as both coaches made multiple substitutions, with replacement Luis Guilherme flashing a shot over and Bowen seeing a rasping shot turned aside by Bayındır in added time.

West Ham United kept their chances of winning the 2025 Premier League Summer Series alive by coming from behind to beat Everton at Soldier Field in Chicago on Wednesday evening. While the Irons did not exactly blow the Blues away in the Windy City, goals in either half from Lucas Paquetá and Player of the Match Niclas Füllkrug secured a welcome win for Head Coach Graham Potter, his squad and the thousands of Hammers who made their way to the iconic stadium on the shores of Lake Michigan.

West Ham started by far the brighter of the two teams under a threatening sky, but could not turn chances into goals. The first opportunity came as early as the first minute when Michael Keane’s poor back pass played in Callum Marshall. The Northern Ireland international opted to shoot first time, but his left-foot effort was turned behind by Mark Travers. Then, after Kaelan Casey had blocked a low effort from Gueye, and handball claims against the centre-back had been waved away by American referee Rosendo Mendoza, the Londoners went close again.

The lively Marshall was fouled by Keane, who was booked for blocking off the FA Youth Cup winner. Captain James Ward-Prowse stepped up and curled a powerful 30-yard free-kick inches past the left-hand post. Then, on 17 minutes, an error cost the Irons. Casey was robbed of possession, allowing Harrison Armstrong to get away. He found Gueye inside the penalty area and the Everton captain fired a right-foot shot under Wes Foderingham’s right arm and into the net.

West Ham responded well. Dinos Mavropanos saw a header blocked, Paquetá fired over, then Andy Irving saw a powerful left-foot drive well saved by a diving Travers. Casey then made partial amends for his earlier error by blocking a goalbound shot from Iliman Ndiaye, and moments later West Ham were level as Travers punched a Kilman diagonal into his own head and Paquetá reacted quickest to prod the ball into the unguarded net. The Brazilian then fired a powerful free-kick wide as West Ham closed the first half in control, albeit their 70% possession was not reflected in the scoreline as the teams went in level at one-all.

With Sunday’s game against Bournemouth in mind, Potter made seven substitutions at half-time, replacing debutant Kyle Walker-Peters, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Kilman, Casey, Potts, Ward-Prowse and Marshall with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luis Guilherme, Jean-Clair Todibo, Nayef Aguerd, Guido Rodríguez, Jarrod Bowen and Niclas Füllkrug.

The Irons went close to going in front ten minutes into the second period when Bowen took advantage of more loose defending but saw his right-foot shot blocked by Keane. At the other end, Charly Alcaraz twice sliced off-target for the Toffees. Then, on 64 minutes, Füllkrug showed exactly why he has scored 14 goals for Germany with an unstoppable rapier-like finish into the bottom right-hand corner from the left corner of the penalty area.

After Wan-Bissaka fired into the side netting and Bowen sliced wide, Everton attempted a late rally, but Alcaraz nodded wide, Jake O’Brien’s header was caught by Foderingham and finally Thierno Barry sliced past the post from six yards. With that, although Lewis Orford was denied by Travers in the final minute, West Ham had a victory in Chicago to celebrate.

Clinical finishing from Niclas Füllkrug and Jarrod Bowen ensured West Ham United completed their 2025 Premier League Summer Series with a 2-0 win over AFC Bournemouth in the United States. The star forwards converted either side of half-time at the incredible Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, as Graham Potter’s squad ended the tournament with back-to-back victories following a midweek win over Everton in Chicago.

Bournemouth created nearly three times as many goal attempts as West Ham, 14 to five, but a combination of wasteful finishing, good goalkeeping and last-ditch defending meant it was the Londoners who took the three points.

Maximilian Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and El Hadji Malick Diouf denied Evanilson, Adam Scott and David Brooks inside the opening six minutes as Bournemouth started fast. On eight minutes, Evanilson inexplicably fired Marcus Tavernier’s left-wing cross against the inside of the post when it looked simpler to score, and the ball curved behind Alphonse Areola and out for a goal kick.

Hamed Traorè and Tavernier had shots blocked and the latter fired the former’s cross into the side netting, all inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour. Then, miraculously, West Ham went in front on 24 minutes. After an improved period of play, Diouf’s dangerous cross was initially mishit by Bowen, but he steadied himself and rolled square for Füllkrug to convert from seven yards. Four minutes later, Bournemouth hit the woodwork for a second time as Illia Zabarnyi’s powerful header cannoned down off the underside of the bar. Evanilson got to the bouncing ball first, but Areola clawed away the Brazilian’s follow-up header. The half ended with Lucas Paquetá dragging a shot wide, and West Ham went in for their half-time oranges – or maybe it was Georgian peaches – one goal to the good.

After Bowen had sliced a presentable opportunity wide, Bournemouth hit the frame of the West Ham goal again. Aaron Wan-Bissaka poked the ball away from a Cherry and Areola opted not to pick it up, instead thumping an attempted clearance into Evanilson and the ball cannoned off the outside of the post. Within minutes, West Ham punished their opponents again. Player of the Match Diouf was the creator again, as his whipped left-wing cross was met by Bowen, whose right-foot shot bounced back past substitute goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

The chances dried up – as did the weather after a pre-match storm drenched Atlanta – as both coaches emptied their substitutes’ benches, and ultimately West Ham held out for a victory that guarantees second-place in the Premier League Summer Series table.

West Ham United U21s fell to a 2-0 defeat against a combative Atlético Sanluqueño side in Benalup-Casas Viejas.

Mark Robson’s side enjoyed encouraging spells in the opening 45 minutes, dictating the tempo with confident play in possession and limiting the Spanish team to very few clear openings. Despite their control, West Ham found it difficult to generate sustained momentum in a first half frequently disrupted by fouls and stoppages. Nonetheless, the young Hammers defended well against a series of set-pieces and went in level at the break.

The second period followed a similar pattern, with the home side continuing to interrupt play and look for openings through direct play. Finley Hooper, introduced at the interval, was called into early action and made a solid save to keep the scores level, while Regan Clayton went close at the other end after being picked out inside the area. But it was Sanluqueño who found the breakthrough midway through the half, exploiting a loose moment in West Ham’s high line to create a two-on-one situation. Germán Cardona finished the move confidently, and the forward doubled the advantage minutes later after being played in by Israel González. Both sides ended with ten men following an altercation on the halfway line to give a frustrating conclusion to a positive week in southern Spain.

NextGen Cup

For the third consecutive year, West Ham United U18s will travel to Czechia to take part in the NextGen Cup, an international U19 pre-season tournament hosted by AC Sparta Praha.

This year’s tournament runs from 6 to 10 August and features six teams. Joining the young Hammers in Group B are SK Slavia Praha and FC Midtjylland, while Group A is made up of Southampton, Rangers, and hosts AC Sparta Praha.

Although the NextGen Cup is officially an U19s competition, with players born in 2006 eligible to feature, West Ham United will be fielding a younger squad made up of U18s and U16s who will form the core of the U18 side in 2025/26, a season in which the young Hammers will compete in the U18 Premier League South, FA Youth Cup, and look to defend their U18 Premier League Cup title.

West Ham United U18s were narrowly beaten in their opening fixture at the 2025 NextGen Cup, falling to a 2-1 defeat against SK Slavia Praha U19s in Prague. Two early goals from the home side left the young Hammers with work to do, but a positive second-half response saw them grow into the contest and finish strongly with David Chigwada pulling one back late on to ensure a nervy finale.

The U18s arrived in the Czech capital off the back of a promising pre-season campaign and showed glimpses of that confidence in the opening stages. First-year scholar Jephthah Medine was lively on the left flank and created the first real opportunity with a cross into the box that found Andre Dike, whose effort was blocked.

But it was Slavia who struck first, capitalising on a misplaced pass at the back. Matyas Tomek pounced on an under-hit ball across the West Ham penalty area and fed Petr Potmešil who slotted home to open the scoring inside seven minutes. The home side doubled their advantage just after the quarter-hour mark. A well-worked move down the left saw Vit Skokan reach the byline before cutting the ball back to the edge of the box, where Tomas Ferenc guided a low half-volley into the far corner. Despite the early setbacks, West Ham began to assert themselves more as the first half wore on. Dike brought a smart save out of Slavia’s Ondřej Suchý after bringing down a high cross from Joe Scanlon, while Aaron Kamara was denied by a last-ditch tackle following a flowing team move.

The Hammers went into the break trailing but with signs of a response already emerging. The second half saw lead coach Lauris Coggin turn to his bench, with six substitutions made around the hour mark to ensure minutes for everyone ahead of the start of the competitive campaign later this month. Slavia continued to threaten on the counter, but Fin Hooper made an important save from Jakub Kratochvíl to keep the deficit at two. At the other end, Martin Peychev, Connor Brooks and Jonathan Unwin combined well as West Ham looked to build pressure.

Chigwada eventually reduced the deficit in stoppage time. After Joel Kerr’s effort was parried, the substitute reacted quickest to head home the rebound from close range.

West Ham United U18s were forced to settle for a point in their final Group B fixture at the 2025 NextGen Cup, drawing 1-1 with FC Midtjylland U19s. Needing a two-goal victory to reach Sunday’s final, the young Hammers produced a valiant second-half display against a very physical opponent to level proceedings after falling behind in the first period.

Lauris Coggin’s side started brightly and almost took an early lead when Martin Peychev rattled the post after just five minutes. Connor Brooks proved a constant threat down the right-hand side, delivering dangerous balls into the area, while Joel Kerr and Reggie Morris linked well in advanced areas.

However, against the run of play, it was the Danish side who broke the deadlock on 31 minutes. Julius Emefile latched onto Sofus Johannesen’s through ball and, with a touch of fortune, saw his effort deflect off Emmanuel Onyeka-Fejokwu and wrong-foot goalkeeper Tommy Goodger. Midtjylland almost doubled their lead before the break, but Goodger made a sharp save to deny Guilherme Olimpo da Silva and keep West Ham in the contest.

The second half began with more pressure from the Danish side, with August Rytter and Jens Munk both going close, but the introduction of Jephthah Medine and Andre Dike helped swing the momentum back in the Hammers’ favour.

Medine’s delivery from the left caused problems throughout the final stages, and with just over 15 minutes left, he provided a pinpoint cross for Dike to slot home at close range.

West Ham pushed hard for a second goal, which would have seen them leapfrog SK Slavia Praha U19s into second place, with Medine striking the post directly from a corner and Dike continuing to be a menace in the box. Yet, despite their late rally, the all-important winner wouldn’t come.

The result leaves the young Hammers third in Group B and heading into a fifth-place play-off at 9am BST on Sunday, where they will face their third-placed counterparts from Group A, Rangers or Southampton.

West Ham United U18s rounded off their pre-season schedule with a narrow 4-3 defeat to Rangers U19s in the fifth-place play-off at the 2025 NextGen Cup in Prague.

In a frenetic opening, both sides created early chances before Rangers struck first on two minutes. A swift counter saw Cameron Fernie pick out Cormac Christie, who squared for Max Cameron to finish into an empty net. Lauris Coggin’s side responded well and were rewarded on 17 minutes. West Ham’s high press forced the Rangers back line into a mistake with Jephthah Medine feeding captain Andre Dike who calmly slotted in at the near post. Rangers regained their lead just four minutes later through Callum Burnside, but parity was restored again before the half-hour when David Chigwada dispossessed a defender and applied a composed one-on-one finish.

The young Hammers carried that momentum into the second half and went ahead for the first time on 51 minutes. Vinnie Perkins’ driving run down the right created the opening, and after Joel Kerr’s effort was blocked, Lewis Beckford kept his composure to round the goalkeeper and make it 3-2.

Rangers hit back in the closing stages, Christopher Eadie finishing off a piercing back-to-front move to level proceedings before converting from the penalty spot five minutes later to complete his brace. Despite late pressure from West Ham, Rangers held firm to claim the win.

Junior Robinson’s strike separated West Ham United U21s and Ipswich Town U21s at Rush Green, as Mark Robson’s young Hammers rounded off a productive pre-season schedule with a hard-fought win over their Premier League 2 rivals. The right-back scored after 72 minutes as Robson’s side gained momentum in a tight game in east London.

Ipswich started the brighter of the two teams, with only the finishing touch lacking. The first opportunity came as early as the first minute when Ryan Carr stung Finlay Herrick’s palms with a right-foot shot, then Luis Brown stood tall to block Tommy Taylor’s goalbound effort.

But having weathered the storm, the young Hammers almost scored with their first attack as Dan Rigge worked himself space on the edge of the box and hit a low-angled shot, but it was a comfortable save for George Barrett, before Regan Clayton was picked out on the left, having charged up from the back, and he drove into the box and struck an effort that was saved by Barrett. Robson’s charges continued to show encouraging signs. Josh Landers silkily glided into the box, only to see his penalty appeals denied, while at the other end Ash Boatswain headed just wide of Herrick’s left-hand post. West Ham hit back shortly after the half-hour mark, with Rigge stealing between two defenders and seeing a snapshot from ten yards tipped wide by the Tractor Boys’ No1, then Landers’ long-range effort was blocked.

And as the first-half appeared to be petering out, the Premier League 2 newcomers saw a goal disallowed as Ashley Boatswain, who had been assisted by a header across goal from Corbin Mthunzi, was ruled offside.

Into the second half, and Brown scooped a shot over the bar immediately after the restart, when a corner from the left fell to him unmarked, then Leon Ayinde’s shot was blocked by the Irons’ rearguard. As could have been predicted in a pre-season friendly, Robson made a raft of West Ham substitutions in an attempt to alter the course of the game, and the Hammers looked threatening on the counter.

Yet it was Ipswich who threatened next, when a cross was played into substitute Rio Morgan by Ashton Boswell just inside the area, but his acrobatic effort down was comfortably gathered in by Herrick. Then, Abube Onuchukwu spurned the visitors’ best chance to put them ahead after 70 minutes, but he couldn't keep his header down from Steven Turner’s free-kick.

Moments later, they were punished, as a moment of despair invited the Hammers into the lead after 72 minutes, when goalkeeper Henry Gray spilled a relatively tame Robinson strike into his own net. With that, our defence were forced to batten down the hatches as the Tractor Boys pressed for an equaliser, to ensure we ended pre-season in the best way possible.

West Ham United came from a goal down before Alphonse Areola’s two penalty shootout saves secured a pre-season victory over French visitors LOSC Lille. It was a tale of two experienced international centre-forwards in normal time. First, old adversary Olivier Giroud returned to haunt West Ham with a well-taken goal in first half stoppage-time, then Niclas Füllkrug levelled with a clinical finish three minutes from the end of the second.

Into the shootout and Areola denied Nathan Ngoy to take it to sudden death, then kept out Lilian Baret’s spot-kick to secure a welcome and deserved win for Head Coach Graham Potter and his squad. This victory brought an end to West Ham’s five-match, four-country pre-season adventures, with the 2025/26 Premier League campaign next up, kicking-off at Sunderland on Saturday 16 August.

Against Lille, an entertaining game saw the two teams trade chances and both goalkeepers called into action throughout, and West Ham deservedly coming out on top in the end.

Jarrod Bowen, who netted against Manchester United and AFC Bournemouth during the Premier League Summer Series in the United States, went close to adding another goal inside four minutes. The No20 won possession from Alexsandro and raced into the penalty area but saw his left-foot shot saved by Arnaud Bodart.

Lille’s veteran Algeria right-back Aïssa Mandi, who would go off injured before half-time, then arrowed a 25-yarder past Areola’s top left-hand corner. Two minutes later, on eleven, the outstanding El Hadji Malick Diouf delivered a superb cross from deep, but Bowen’s touch unfortunately let him down.

On 16, Mandi and Ngal'ayel Mukau combined and Giroud teed-up Iceland international Hákon Arnar Haraldsson, whose first-time shot was well blocked by a sliding Maximilian Kilman. Four minutes later, Haraldsson turned provider after intercepting on the edge of the West Ham penalty area, but Norwegian Marius Broholm shot across the face of goal and wide.

Then, to complete a lively opening quarter, Bowen got away from Mandi and Ngoy, using his low centre of gravity, and into the Lille box. He fed James Ward-Prowse, who curled inches wide. Lille took their turn to threaten again next, as another long-range shot, this time from left-back Romain Perraud, was parried by a diving Areola. However, the Frenchman could do nothing to stop his fellow 2018 FIFA World Cup winner Giroud opening the scoring with the final kick of the first half.

Thirty-five-year-old Lille captain Benjamin André was given too much time to pick out fellow veteran Giroud. The 38-year-old – returning to France this summer 13 years after he departed Montpellier for Arsenal – lost his markers, controlled on his chest and expertly steered the ball into the top right-hand corner. With that, referee Darren England blew for half-time.

Less than three minutes after the break, Bowen went close again, racing onto Füllkrug’s  pass and holding off two defenders, but poking his shot a yard past the post. West Ham remained on top and minutes later Aaron Wan-Bissaka crossed to the far post for fellow wing-back Diouf, who headed back across goal and wide. The Irons kept pushing and, after fine work from Freddie Potts and Bowen, Füllkrug met Wan-Bissaka’s cross with a powerful header that Bodart did well to push over the crossbar.

Kilman then nodded the resulting Ward-Prowse corner over, before Nayef Aguerd headed the next corner past the far post, then Füllkrug blasted high and wide from Lucas Paquetá’s rolled pass and Ward-Prowse fired a free-kick into the Lille defensive wall.

With five minutes to go, Diouf, Füllkrug and Bowen combined again on a lightning counter, only for Bodart to turn the England man’s fierce strike onto the crossbar and behind. Then, finally, on 87 minutes, the equaliser came courtesy of Füllkrug. High pressing from Bowen and Kyle Walker-Peters turned the ball over, Tomáš Souček got to the byline and pulled back for the big German to score with a powerful first-time finish.

Into the penalty shootout and Bodart initially got his revenge, saving Füllkrug’s opening effort. Haraldsson, Bowen, Mukau, Ward-Prowse, Alexsandro, Souček, Soriba Diaoune and Aguerd all scored, before Areola denied Ngoy to take it to sudden death.

Kilman kept his nerve to make it 5-4 West Ham, and Areola saved from Baret to secure the Cup for the Hammers!

West Ham United women’s team’s pre-season in Prague came to a close with a 1-0 victory over Sparta Prague at Great Strahov Stadium. Keeping a clean sheet against the record 1. Liga Women holders, Rehanne Skinner’s side were deserved winners in the Czech Republic capital having created a plethora of opportunities, particularly in the first period. It proved to be Riko Ueki’s 22nd-minute goal that sealed victory for the Hammers, which saw the Japan international rise highest from Viviane Asseyi’s free-kick and duly head home.

Without creating a clear-cut chance, the home side enjoyed some early pressure - knocking the ball around quickly and getting some joy in behind. But the Irons remained vigilant, including Shelina Zadorsky, who was on hand to shut out any danger.

The Hammers grew into the contest and called Nikola Harantová into action after the ten-minute mark when Seraina Piubel met Inès Belloumou’s corner and fired a venomous effort on goal that the shot-stopper was equal to. Set-pieces gave Skinner’s side a lot of joy in the first period and Zadorsky was next to try her luck, but her header was cleared off the line.  However, the Hammers soon found the breakthrough midway through the first half when Asseyi’s free-kick was met by Ueki, who guided a lofted header over Harantová and into the net. The Japan international beamed as she celebrated, and her side used the goal as confidence to kick-on for the remainder of the first period.

A second nearly came straight away, and Asseyi was almost the architect again. This time her free-kick found Zadorsky but the defender, at full stretch, was unable to guide the ball on target. Not long after, Keira Flannery was found in time and space inside the box, however she dragged her shot narrowly wide of the post. There was time for one last opportunity before the half-time whistle sounded when Shekiera Martinez received the ball from Katrina Gorry on the edge of the box, but sent her shot just over the bar.

Into the second period, and Skinner made six chances at the break, bringing on Megan Walsh, Anouk Denton, Eva Nyström, Halle Houssein, Oona Siren and Soraya Walsh, whilst Ffion Morgan and Verena Hanshaw had been introduced in the first 45.

Wales international Morgan showed her pace to break in behind six minutes after the restart and cut the ball back with both S. Walsh and Martinez itching to tap home. However, Aneta Pochmanová was on hand to clear the ball out for a corner. Martinez then had an opportunity of her own as she burst into the penalty area with Ueki for company, but she over-ran the ball slightly and Sparta were handed a goal-kick.

Skinner’s side continued to flood forward, but just lacked the final ball at times despite an injection of energy from Brasero, S. Walsh and Brown up front. But nevertheless, the Irons secured the victory and will leave Prague pleased with what they have achieved during their training camp.
