1997-98 Avon Insurance Football Combination

Manager: Roger Cross

Home games played at Roots Hall, Southend United

NEW HOME FOR THE RESERVES!
As a further development of the special relationship forged between West Ham United FC and Southend United FC, it was announced, that the Club has decided to play all our 'home' Reserve fixtures at Roots Hall, Victoria Road, Southend.
All our home matches will have an evening kick-off time of 7.45pm and take place usually on a Tuesday. Admission will be free to all season ticket holders of both clubs, upon production of their relevant books, whilst non-holders will be charged £2.50 (adult) or £1.00 for OAP's and juniors.
The AGM of the Football Combination was this year held in early June at Tottenham Hotspur's ground and it was decided by the clubs in membership to vote for an 18 club division with everyone playing each other on a home and away league basis thus giving a total of 34 games for every club forthe new season. At the time of the AGM it was also announced by the Management Committee of the Football Combination that the Avon Insurance Group of Companies would continue their sponsorship of the competition for the next couple of seasons.
Last season's cup tourney which was re-introduced to give extra fixtures to all clubs because of the unusual format of the league structure has been suspended until a decision can be taken on its future.

With their opening three games all at home it was hoped that the Reserves would make a solid start to the 1997-98 Football Combination campaign. Unfortunately this proved not to be the case.
For their first game on Wednesday 6th August they entertained Millwall at Roots Hall with the South Londoners, watched by their new manager Billy Bonds, proving to be the stronger of the two teams. Tim Breacker he attempted to get some valuable match practice after a period of absence through injury during pre-season training.  The visitors took an interval lead as we conceded an easy opener but Lee Boylan got us back on level terms when he gave away a 59th minute penalty. A second lapse in defence however, presented all three points to the Lions' second string as they scrambled home a soft winner.

The following Tuesday saw us produce a much better performance against Queens Park Rangers where despite being two goals in arrears, after just twenty minutes, we fought back to take all the points in a six goal thriller. Midfielder, Ian Bishop started the revival when he converted his fine effort in the 27th minute and we drew level four minutes before the half-time interval when the West Londoners conceded an own goal.

With their tails now up our Reserves delighted their watching fans as they added a third goal through right wing-back Jason Moore five minutes into the second period and then rounded off proceedings when Anthony McFarlane added a fourth goal with twenty minutes to go to seal our first three points of the season.

Three days later Tottenham Hotspur were the third London side to make the trip to our new Essex home.  As part of our 'special relationship' with the 'Shrimpers' we included three of their staff in our starting line-up as triallists before a crowd of nearly 1,000 spectators.

The visitors with Gary Mabbut, Colin Calderwood, Andy Sinton, Ruel Fox, Jason Dozell and Jose Dominguez, amongst others, in their team proved far too strong for us and the North Londoners ran out three-one winners.

August saw us travelling away for the first time but once again we were pitted against metropolitan opposition as Millwall were our hosts.

For the second time in two weeks it was a last gasp winner that earned all the points for our South London rivals.

Once again as in the first match the Lions took a first-half lead, this time in the 14th minute.

For the second time in as many weeks Lee Boylan got our equaliser as he struck from six yards in the 60th minute. It seemed enough to assure us of a share of the spoils until the home side once again took the honours with a last minute winner.

After the disappointing start to this season's Avon Insurance Football Combination campaign, which yielded only one win in their first four matches, the reserves got back on track with a couple of victories in their next two games.
Bottom of the table Swindon Town were the visitors to Roots Hall on Thursday 28th August for our fourth home game in the space of three weeks. Defeated in their two previous games, away at Crystal Palace and at home to Spurs, the Wiltshire side suffered a third loss against London
opponents when we inflicted a narrow solitary goal defeat upon them. The visitors had player-manager Steve McMahon in their line-up whilst we fielded triallists Steve Ropley and Russian Yuri Koutun at the centre of our defence.
Despite their lowly pre-match position, Swindon nevertheless had an equal share of the early exchanges and twice within the opening ten minutes came close to scoring. Ourfirst opportunities to reply fell to Ian Bishop who was unlucky when his first effort from 30 yards flew a few inches wide of the left upright, whilst his second, from a free-kick just outside the penalty-area, went over the crossbar. In the next 20 minutes Lee Boylan twice went close whilst Gary Alexander headed following a high centre from Jason Moore after Craig Etherington had released him down the wing.
The second-half began much as the first with both defences holding out. The deadlock was finally broken in the 76th minute when Moore won the ball in the tackle and broke loose to set Boylan free. He evaded a defender on the edge of the penalty-area before driving his shot through the goalkeeper's legs. In the final ten minutes, Finn twice had to make good saves in order to deny Swindon an equaliser.

The following Tuesday we travelled to Plough Lane for our meeting with Crystal Palace. Two goals in the opening 20 minutes were enough to give is a strong basis on which to build and although Palace hit back in the second-half and scored ten minutes from time, the Hammers held out and emerged as worthy winners.
Michael Carrick, making his debut, opened our account in the fifth minute and Keith Rowland added a second 15 minutes later when his free-kick took a slight deflection. During the second-half we made two substitutions when Lee Hodges replaced the young Carrick and returned to our colours for the first time since his cartilage operation several months ago. Youth-squad player Tyrelle Forbes came on for his reserve-team debut when Jason Moore was forced to retire after cutting his chin, which required stitches, following a clash of heads. The win pushed the Hammers up into fourth spot in the table just behind undefeated Portsmouth who have the same number of points but a better goal difference. Leaders Tottenham Hotspur had lost their unbeaten record the Palace by the odd goal in five and so our victory over the South Londoners was all the more significent in the circumstances.

There was a reunion for two former Hammers stars in the Avon Insurance Football Combination match at Roots Hall when George Parris, now a Southend United player but turning out for us under the special relationship agreement between our two Clubs, faced Stuart Slater who was in the Watford line-up for the visitors. George was using the game as an opportunity to get some much needed match-fitness practice since joining the Essex side recently. Also in the starting line-up were Steve Potts and Ian Bishop who had been club-mates of the ex-Hammers during their spell on the Upton Park groundstaff during the late 80s until their departure around five years ago.
Manny Omoyinmi returned to the side after injury and shot us into a 15th minute lead. Watford fought back after the interval and just when it looked likely they might equalise we were awarded a penalty when another of Keith's centres was handled in the penalty-box by a Watford defender. Omoyinmi, however, blazed the spot-kick yards wide of the target. In taking the penalty Manny suffered a recurrence of his thigh strain trouble and was promptly substituted to prevent further damage being caused, but has still been sidelined for the last few weeks. To further add to our misery, Watford equalised from the penalty-spot themselves five minutes later after Neil Finn brought down an opponent in the area. We might still have taken all of the three points available for our win if Gary Alexander had been on target in the last minute, but unfortunately after rounding the 'keeper he fired his shot into the side netting from a narrow angle. The result on the whole was a fair one on the evening's proceedings and kept us in sixth place in the table.

Their pre-match position of bottom place in the table with no wins, two draws and four losses in the opening six games of their season so far, proved to be a false one for Brighton & Hove Albion reserves. Fielding a smattering of players who had appeared in their senior-team last season, the Seagulls finally proved to be too experienced and strong for a Hammers side that contained a number of Youth Section trainees and two triallists from Southend United — Andy Thomson, returning to action after a long-term injury, and John Nielsen.
Early exchanges saw close incidents at each end with our best opportunity falling to Thomson, who latched onto a back-pass only to see some sharp goalkeeping for the visitors smother his final shot. At the other end Les Sealey pulled-off an equally good save before seeing another effort bounce clear after hitting his right-hand post. With 17 minutes gone the deadlock was finally broken when the Seagulls scored following a free-kick from 25 yards. Five minutes into the second-half a fumble by the Brighton 'keeper almost resulted in an equaliser for Graeme Philson, but then two goals in eight minutes enabled the visitors to extend their lead. With 20 minutes remaining, an Anthony McFarlane corner was nodded down before David Partridge scrambled home his own header. Our joy was short-lived, however, as Brighton scored again two minutes later. With ten minutes to go, second-half substitutes Richard Garcia, Shaun Byrne and Gary Alexander all combined in a flowing movement from midfield to reduce our arrears as Alexander netted his first Combination goal from inside the six-yard box at the far post. Five minutes later the trio linked-up once again but this time our youth-team's leading scorer just failed with his rising shot which skimmed the crossbar.

Our scheduled away Combination fixture against Luton Town on Wednesday 1st October was called off the previous day because of the Bedfordshire club's injury situation which precluded them from being able to field a team.
The Reserves travelled south of the river on Wednesday 8th October for their afternoon game against Charlton Athletic at the Addicks training ground, the venue being changed at the last minute virtually with the team coach arriving at its original destination of Welling FC's ground.

The Charlton team included former Hammers players Mark Bowen and Matty Holmes in a strong looking line-up but it was former QPR star Bradley Allen who grabbed the headlines with a hat-trick. With our current injury problems and also having to field another XI in a testimonial at Bournemouth the same evening, our own team included a large contingent of Youth Squad trainees.

Portsmouth were the visitors to Roots Hall on another rain-soaked evening and included in their very experienced squad was former Upton Park favourite Adrian Whitbread.

It was Whitbread who opened the scoring in the 16th minute when his looping header found the back of the net and although play continued to flow between the two penalty areas with triallists Regis Coulbault and Casha Walker adding their presence to our young attack as they overlapped down the flanks, we were unable to get back on level terms despite creating a number of opportunities in the Portsmouth penalty area. The second-half continued much in the same fashion but once again it was the South Coast club who broke the deadlock as veteran striker John Durnin cut in from the right flank to chip his shot over the advancing Neil Finn and secure the points. Finn was then called into action a couple of further times as he dived full length to keep out further Pompey afforts.

The recent run of defeats in our home fixtures continued on Tuesday evening when Wimbledon were the visitors to Roots Hall for our Combination fixture.
On a bitterly cold night the South Londoners, who were Champions last season, finally proved too strong for a Hammers side that included a number of players returning to our colours after injury. Most notable amongst these was Ian Pearce who had missed the last two Premiership games whilst Scott Mean was making his first appearance of the season and Lee Boylan was returning after several weeks on the sidelines. Lee Hodges continued his comeback to match fitness with a spirited performance over the ninety minutes.

Once again the recent run of defeats in our home fixtures continued when Southampton were the visitors to Roots Hall for our latest Reserve Team Combination fixture. After only eight minutes play they opened the scoring when we lost the ball in midfield on the halfway line and they broke quickly to expose our defence through their inside right channel to the edge of our penalty area. The ball was laid back inside for their talented midfielder, Matthew Robinson, to volley home high into the top left hand corner of Les Sealey's goal. Eight minutes after the interval Southampton once again got away down the right and scored a second goal when a deep centre was fired across the face of our goal-mouth at chest height. The ball was headed home at the far post after evading a couple of our rearguard.
In our starting line-up was triallist Warren Ryan who showed good control at times. Scott Mean and Lee Boylan continued to make progress to match fitness after their absences through long term injuries. The previous week's fixture v Ipswich Town at Portman Road was called off due to the fact that they were badly hit by injuries and could not raise an XI to take the field.

A crowd of nearly 900 were at Roots Hall to witness the return of Paul Kitson. Paul out of action for the last ten weeks following a groin operation, made an immediate impact with two goals in a win over visitors Chelsea in our latest Avon Insurance Combination fixture. It was the first time the reserves had scored at home in four games.
The West London Club, just one place above the Hammers in the table although with the same number of points, set the early pace as they put our defence under pressure with crosses into the penalty-area. It was Kitson, however, who relieved the pressure when he attempted to set Jason Moore down the right, but Chelsea 'keeper Dimitri Kharine came well outside his area to fly-kick clear. From a corner Lee Boylan headed just over whilst at the other end Moore made an excellent saving tackle to deny the Blues.
With 15 minutes gone, Kitson had a left-foot shot blocked but the ball came out to David Terrier who lofted a left- foot cross over the Chelsea rearguard and Kitson was on hand to take the ball on his right-boot before pulling it back onto his other foot to slot the ball into the corner of the goal across the front of the Chelsea goalkeeper. It took the visitors less than five minutes to equalise when a free-kick on the Chelsea right was knocked into the penalty-area and only partially cleared to Mark Stein who hit a right-foot shot past Les Sealey into the corner of the net. Further exchanges saw opportunities at both ends with Boylan, Joe Keith and Kitson all being on target for the Hammers whilst at the other end Sealey was forced into a fine diving save when the ball was lost on the edge of our box. Five minutes after half-time, we were back in front when Keith broke through midfield and slid his pass between the Chelsea defence for Moore who crossed for Kitson to sidefoot home from 12 yards. Once again Sealey had to make a great save when he parried with his left-hand to deny Stein levelling for a scond time, and a few minutes later dived full length to parry away another effort for a corner to maintain our advantage.
Another break from midfield in the 65th minute ended with Kitson feeding the ball to Boylan in the inside-right channel. Lee's driven cross caused problems in the Chelsea six-yard box with Kharine scrambling to clear. Sixty seconds later, Kitson was substituted by Gary Alexander who successfully linked with Boylan to continue the assault. For the final 20 minutes the Hammers were mostly in control, with Boylan going close on more than one occasion — and apart from a couple of long range efforts from the Chelsea attack, the closest the visitor's came to scoring was when a dipping shot from 25-yards rattled our crossbar.
After the match Paul Kitson commented: "I've only had two days of serious training, so it was great to get back with a couple of goals. There was no reaction to the groin problem but I feel a bit stiff." For the watching Hammers' fans it was obvious to all that Paul had lost none of his sharpness and awareness of where the target was during his long enforced absence.

After a break of six weeks without an away fixture, during which they had three home fixtures, the Reserves once again returned to their travels on Wednesday 3rd December when they journeyed to Wiltshire for a game with Swindon Town. The outstanding feature, as far as the Hammers were concerned, of an otherwise rather one sided match, was the continued improvement in Paul Kitson's return to match fitness as he recovers from his long enforced absence following a groin operation.

For the second time in eight days Paul managed over an hour's actual match practice before he was substituted with fifteen minutes remaining. Almost from the first whistle the Swindon second string, which contained the experience of Ian Culverhouse, Mark Walters and Jason Drysdale, took the game to us putting our defence under pressure. With only eight minutes on the clock a cross from the left touch-line to the right was immediately swung back into the centre for our goalkeeper Alex O'Reilly to be beaten with a header. Three minutes later it was O'Reilly who set up an equaliser when his long ball downfield was flicked on by Kitson to Lee Boylan whose one touch pass enabled Joe Keith to bring us back into contention. With five minutes to go before the half-time break the home side once more got in front when Steve Cowe grabbed his second goal of the evening.
Unfortunately, the opportunity to snatch a point was dispelled with eleven minutes to go when a mistake by Graeme Philson enabled Walters, the former Glasgow Rangers and Liverpool star, to run on and score to seal the home team's advantage.

Our home fixture with Oxford United, which had been postponed earlier in the month from Tuesday 23rd December because of the Cup commitments at the Roots Hall Ground, eventually took place a week later on the 30th December when it was mutually agreed to play the game at the Manor Ground to help clear at least one of the back-log of fixtures that was beginning to build up.
Amongst our line-up for the noon start were three of our continental stars - new signing Frenchman, Bernard Lama, his countryman Samassi Abou and Portuguese international Paolo Alves. Our hosts were first to settle into their rhythm which led to them taking an early lead as they scored in the fourth minute following a corner. We gradually began to get more into the game and equalised in the 34th minute when Alves scored following a cross from Keith Rowland.
As the match proceeded we were well on top and should have converted at least one or more of some of the other opportunities that we created before Alves added a second to his tally in the 62nd minute when he scored at the second attempt. From further chances created the Portuguese striker might well have completed his hat-trick which would have been a fairer reflection of our superiority over the 90 minutes.
Nevertheless, the victory was very welcome in the circumstances, as were the three points that came with it and an excellent way to finish the old year off.

Included in our starting line-up was Frank Lampard who played in this fixture to decrease his chances of suspension later on and as he completed a fifth successive match without being booked he thus reduced his number of cautions to three and eased the threat of future suspension.

It was a freezing evening on the South Coast but both Lampard and Anthony McFarlane warmed things up with efforts that hit the woodwork. Those chances were the closest that either team came to scoring and with both sides struggling at the foot of the table the end result of a goalless draw was perhaps a fairer reflection of events.

The visit of Charlton Athletic to the Roots Hall Ground on Tuesday 27th January led to the first of two disappointing results the Reserves were to suffer in the space of eight days. Early exchanges v Charlton resulted in most of the action taking place in the middle of The pitch and the interval came without the deadlock being broken.
Just after half-time both goals had narrow escapes, but then misfortune overtook on-trial goalie Stephen Bywater as he came off his line to intercept a long ball down the middle but in so doing conceded a penalty, before being sent off, as he collided with an opposing forward. Graeme Philson took over his jersey but was beaten by the well directed spot-kick. Although it was cut and thrust Charlton added another goal when they got to the byline and cut the ball back before scoring at the second attempt.

Two more goals from Boylan in the second-half completed his hat-trick but Pompey grabbed another three and for our debutant Australian goalkeeper, Peter Zois, it was a particularly frustrating night and our sympathies are extended to him as he suffered the consequences of some defensive errors which were not of his making.

Early on Danny Bartley had a fine effort well saved by the Canaries' veteran goalkeeper Bryan Gunn whilst another powerful shotwasonly inches wide from our young striker. Throughout the match we worked hard to deserve at least a share of the spoils. However, with twelve minutes to go Norwich broke out of defence as they cleared, after conceding a corner, and although they fired in a weak shot, which was going straight at Ludo, the ball deflected off the knee of Craig Etherington to balloon high over the unlucky 'keeper and into the net. It was a killer blow after the home side had failed to threaten priorto their piece of good fortune.

The Reserves fourth away fixture of the month finally resulted in a change of fortune when they shared the spoils with Tottenham Hotspur at Chigwell. The match had been arranged at short notice in an endeavour to clear some of the backlog of postponements that had been built up over the winter months.
It was newest signing Stephen Bywater who proved to be our star of the day and his performance was even the more outstanding after all the speculation, hype and volume of column inches that had appeared in the newspapers over his transfer from Rochdale in the preceding week or so. A brilliant display from the England Youth goalkeeper proved that he remains a level-headed young man who is mature enough even for his relative lack of years not to be overcome by being in the media spotlight.
A young Hammers side took nearly a quarter-of-an-hour before they managed to get the ball into the Spurs half of the field as we gave the initiative back to the home side by immediately losing the ball as soon as we had won it.
It appeared to be only a matter of time before Tottenham would score but Bywater had other ideas and with 20 minutes gone he pushed one shot that looked destined for the net away for a corner. A second corner from the right minutes later resulted in a great Gary Mabbutt header that once again looked goalbound but Bywater made a great save to deny the Spurs veteran.

After four away fixtures during February the Reserves had their first home match in five weeks when Ipswich Town were the visitors to Roots Hall on Wednesday 4th March. The game had been put back 24-hours from the scheduled date to accommodate the Suffolk side who had a seniorfixture on the Tuesday evening in the Nationwide League. We got off to a good start as after only two minutes of play Lee Hodges scored a spectacular goal when he cut inside from the left wing and hit a right-foot shot from thirty yards across the face of the goal high into the far corner of the net. Continuing to dominate we might well have added to ourscore as another couple of chances deserved a better fate than their eventual outcome.
Ipswich weathered the early pressure and began to come back into the game finally equalising when poor marking by our defence from a corner enabled them to score from a rebound after Neil Finn had only been able to parry an initial shot on target.
Another mistake at the back then left Finn exposed and in a one-on-one with an opponent our goalkeeper ended up by conceding a penalty -which was converted, as well as receiving a booking, as he'd brought down the visiting attacker. The visitors turned around at half-time now well in control and in the 59th minute doubled their advantage when they added a third goal, as following a throw-in a fantastic drive from 35-yards gave Finn no chance as it flew into his net After such a promising start it was disappointing to see us 1-3 in arrears but our lads then took a grip on proceedings. With twenty minutes to go they won a corner which Ian Bishop delivered to the far post where Chris Coyne rose to head it back across goal to Lee Boylan who tapped it in at the other upright. With ten minutes to go we squared things up when second-half substitute Lee Goodwin had his shot partially saved and Hodges was on hand to tidy up and net his second of the evening and our equaliser. For the remainder of the match we continued to play well as the advantage swung once again in our favour. Our lads could well have added to their tally and were unfortunate not to have taken all of the points by the final whistle but for the second match running had to settle for a share of the spoils.

For the third time in fifteen days the Reserves shared the points with their opponents in an Avon Insurance Football Combination League game. This time is was following a visit to South London for their fixture with Wimbledon on the afternoon of Wednesday 11th March.
The match kicked-off at 2pm as both ourselves and the Dons had first-team fixtures that same evening in the FA Carling Premiership and it enabled both sets of Managers and coaches to be present at each of the individual club's commitments.
Once again because of our injury situation we were forced to field many of our younger players and despite the home side having a number of their senior squad players including Robbie Earle, Andy Clarke and Ceri Hughes, as well as Pat Jennings in goal (whose famous father occupied the same position for Arsenal, Spurs and Northern Ireland), in their team our lads did well to earn a share of the spoils.
We created our best chance of the opening period after 15 minutes when the ball was played out of our defence to Danny Bartley on our right flank who then found Lee Boylan in the Dons' penalty area, but unfortunately the young Irishman's touch failed him resulting in the move breaking down and the opportunity passing.
The deadlock continued well into the second-half but our hard-working youngsters began to feel the strain and pressure on them enabling the home side to start to get on top. Stephen Purches came on for Bartley with twelve minutes to go to tighten up our midfield and help to weather the storm.
With six minutes to go we almost snatched a victory when our lads mounted another attack on the Dons' defence but unfortunately a centre that Boylan got his head to did not have enough strength to cause too many problems for the opposing goalkeeperwho saved his effort comfortably.
The game gradually dwindled to its inevitable conclusion as both teams settled for a share of the points although it must be said that the Hammers were probably the happier of the two outfits at the end of the day with the result.

After three drawn games the Reserves got back to winning ways, for the first time this year, when they travelled to Suffolk for an Avon Insurance Football Combination League game against Ipswich on the evening of Wednesday 18th March. Having weathered the early storm we began to play some attractive football which was immediately rewarded when Steven Blaney won a tackle in midfield. Carrying the ball to the bye-line he sent over a great cross to Lee Boylan who knocked the ball onto Anthony McFarlane to score with a right foot shot in the 17th minute.
McFarlane turned sinner three minutes later when he conceded a penalty but a great save from Stephen Bywater diving to his right-hand post kept us in front. We might well have extended our lead whentriallist Mohamed Berte moved out of defence and hit a long pass to Danny Bartley but his first time shot was brilliantly saved by former Hammers goalkeeper Lee Bracey playing between the Ipswich goalposts.
The second-half saw us continue to play more good football which was finally rewarded in the 62nd minute. Ian Bishop started the move which flowed via Bartley down the right flank before his cross to Scott Mean was headed on for Boylan to net. Ipswich Town's Manager, George Burley, then came on as a substitute to attempt to stem the flow of attractive penetrating soccer we were playing but once again Berte was instrumental in putting us further ahead. Collecting the ball he ran three-quarters of the length of the pitch before finding Bartley who hammered home his pass, for a first of the season, to make it three-nil in our favour on the night.

The visit of Norwich City to Roots Hall was our first home game for four weeks and itself had been delayed for 24-hours due to our involvement in the Simon Milton Testimonial Match at Portman Road the previous day.
From the action that took place in the opening ten minutes it looked likely to the watching spectators that they were in for a goal feast as both teams | proved that they i were for the most part better going forward than defending. We took the lead in the fifth minute when a move down our left-flank resulted in the ball being cut-back into the penalty area for Danny Bartley to strike home with a left foot shot, his second goal of the season. Our lads' jubilation lasted just two minutes as a corner from the Norwich left resulted in a ball being played across the face of our goal which unfortunately young Lee Richards, between our goalposts, failed to collect and veteran John Polston converted. And that was it as far as goals were concerned. Manny Omoyinmi and Lee Hodges combined well throughout but, unfortunately, with little luck.
Chances came at both ends but by the conclusion a draw seemed to be a fair reflection on the evening's play.

As had been proved on a number of occasions this season the form of the Reserves has proved rather erractic in that there has been a wide gulf in form from match to match and this has obviously been reflected in results. Part of the reason has been that over the months we have never been able to field a settled side. Injuries to some of our more senior players has meant that a number of juniors have had to be drafted in to fill the gaps. Although the youngsters will gain from the experience in the long term they occasionally found playing in a higher grade of football much tougherthan they had previously been exposed to.
The visit to Southampton on Wednesday 15th April reflected the position quite clearly. After a run of five games without defeat, the Hammers found that they had an uphill mountain to climb when conceding two goals in the opening six minutes through some slack defending. Once again we did quite well when in possession but then let in goals too easily when having lost control. A third goal in the 26th minute virtually sealed the game for the home side who consolidated their fifth place position in the table.
The irony of our situation was amply illustrated with 15 minutes to go before the final whistle when Lee Hodges crashed a tremendous shot against a post. The ball rebounded some 30 yards back up the field and from the resulting fortune on their part Southampton broke away to score a fourth goal to seal our fate and secure the three points.

After the disappointing trip to Southampton the previous week a Reserve side containing a number of our younger players redressed the balance to some extent when they drew 1-1 with Watford at Vicarage Road.

Seven days later we met Arsenal at Roots Hall in a re-arranged fixture.
Paul Kitson continued his recovery, and the Gunners included Ian Wright, making a return after a three month lay¬off, who played for just over an hour as he endeavoured to get fit in a last ditch effort to make the England World Cup squad. Newspaper speculation about the possible appearances of the two strikers swelled the crowd to just over 4,000. Although neither of the two strikers scored, both were always in the thick of the action in the open lively exchanges.
Once again we fielded a couple of our younger Youth Squad players against an experienced Arsenal side and did well to hold them to a 2-2 draw.
