The Reserves began their Avon Insurance Combination season with a group League Cup match against LutonTown at Kenilworth Road on Wednesday 28th August. We fielded a strong team and by the end were comfortable
Taking control right from the start we finally went into the lead in the 27th minute through Florin Raducioiu who then added a second five minutes into the second-half. The game was wrapped up in the 62nd minute when Frank Lampard completed the scoring. Our former England international Peter Shilt6n was rarely tested in goal whilst Steve Potts had a second match as he returned to fitness following his recent injury. We had to substitute Lee Hodges for Australian triallist Steve Riches in the 80th minute when the midfielder was forced to leave the pitch following a clash of heads.

We started our League campaign with a visit to Plough Lane for an afternoon encounter with Crystal Palace. Only four of our previous starting line-up began the match as we fielded a number of our younger players. After a slow start proceedings brightened up as both sides began to create chances at either end. Although we had several opportunities to break the dead-lock the final result of a goalless draw, despite the fact of being a disappointment, was perhaps a fair reflection of the exchanges in a match where neither side was able to dominate.

Once again we fielded a strong side for our second Avon Insurance Combination League Cup Group Three match against Ipswich Town at the Victoria Road Ground.Three goals in the opening 15 minutes virtually sealed the victory before the visitors had time to settle and in fact the margin could have been greater so much were we in command.
We opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Frank Lampard scored and then two goals in a minute from Tony Cottee and John Moncur effectively put the game beyond the East Anglian side.
Although continuing to dominate we were unable to add to our tally which could easily have been doubled with an extra slice of good fortune. At half-time we substituted Peter Shilton for Neil Finn whilst Lee Hodges came on for a second successive Cup-tie as a replacement (this time for Keith Rowland) and Danny Shipp substituted for Moncur with a couple of minutes to go as the midfielder made his first appearance of the season in our colours following injury.

A mixed team of experience and youth travelled to Yate Town F.C.'s ground for our second Avon Insurance Combination League match of the season against Bristol Rovers.
Despite dominating proceedings for virtually the whole of the match we failed to capitalise on our superiority and the numerous chances created and finally had to settle for a disappointing sharing of the points with our hosts.
We finally opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Chris Coyne headed home and maintained our advantage into the second-half. But Rovers levelled, much against the run of play, as a desperate clearance, under fierce pressure as we pressed forward, was forced upfield and volleyed home after the first bounce into our net. Although continuing to dominate we were unable to add to our tally and had to be content with only one point when all three should have been ours but for bad luck and poor finishing. Three members of our Youth Squad (Chris Sains, Lee Goodwin and Gary Alexander) came on as second-half substitutes to make their first appearances in our Reserve team colours this season.

Two weeks later we began our home Avon Insurance Combination League campaign with an afternoon visit from Swansea City to the Victoria Road Ground with a rearranged fixture - the original date having been postponed from mid-September because of our home Southern Junior Floodlit Cup tie versus Portsmouth that same evening and our visit to Underhill for our Coca Cola League Cup match the next day.
Once again a team of experience and youth failed to impress their superiority and could not break down the Welsh visitors but our rear-guard, despite being one of the youngest we have fielded this season, gained valuable experience under the direction of the ageless Peter Shilton who continues to command respect with his great enthusiasm for the game. It was pleasing to see Florin Raducioiu and Stan Lazaridis back after injury with both playing the opening 45 minutes before being substituted by Jason Moore and Joe Keith.

For the visit of Arsenal for our Avon Insurance Combination League Cup Group Three fixture we decided to change the venue to Upton Park and move the kick-off time to 7pm and so give more of our supporters an opportunity to see what was envisaged as one of the most attractive games of the season.
Both clubs fielded teams who contained players with a lot of senior experience as well as a smattering of up-and-coming younger hopefuls.
Two first-half goals - one a superb long range effort from nearly 30 yards from the Gunners were enough to take the points and enable them to join us at the top of the table with six points from three games, both of us having suffered one defeat.
Our Romanian striker Florin Raducioiu continued his progress to match fitness by playing die whole 90 minutes but his fellow countryman Hie Dumitrescu came off at the interval: Craig Etherington going on as substitute. Jason Moore replaced Finnish Youth international Mikko Nieminen with just over 20 minutes to go as die visitors continued their stranglehold on proceedings and dented us any clear cut chances to reduce die deficit.

For the visit to Luton Town for our Avon Insurance Combination League game last Monday afternoon, our team included three of our international brigade. However, despite their efforts and those of their team-mates it was the Hatters who took the points to gain revenge for the Group Three Cup defeat we had inflicted on them at Kenilworth Road in our opening match of the season.
Luton took the lead but Frank Lampard levelled the scores when he scored with a right-foot shot from just inside the box following a cross from the right-wing by Hie Dumitrescu after Paulo Futre had sent a pass through to the Romanian international. A second goal before the interval by the home side sealed the issue in their favour and despite our attempts to once again equalise they held on for the win that pushed them into the top six in the table.

The election of Cardiff City to the Avon Insurance Combination League during the close season meant that we would once again meet the Welsh Club in the competition after an absence of a number of years. Prior to their visit to Upton Park on Tuesday 30th October they had been undefeated in their opening games both in the League (two wins and three draws) as well as the Cup tourney.
In the opening period the nearest we came to scoring was when Frank Lampard crashed a shot against an upright but a solid rear-guard kept the visitors at bay as both teams failed to create any real clear-cut opportunities.
After the interval we adopted a positive attitude and took the lead in the 54th minute when Danny Shipp scored to open his goals' account for the first time this campaign. Youth team striker Gary Alexander once again proved to be on form when he added to our advantage with a well-taken goal with I I minutes of the match remaining. A second goal five minutes later from Shipp sealed the victory as we finally ran out comfortable winners.
A pleasing feature of the match was the return of central-defender Stuart Richardson to our colours when he came on as a substitute with ten minutes of the game remaining. For the tall, blond-haired former Youth team player it was a momentous occasion as it marked another step in his comeback programme after suffering a badly broken leg nearly two years ago.

Seven days later the Reserves travelled to Suffolk for a League fixture with Ipswich Town. Included in our line-up was six of our Youth squad players and another three were named as our substitutes.
A solitary goal scored in the first-half was enough for the East Anglian side to take the three points and avenge the defeat we had inflicted on them earlier in the season in our League Cup Group Three match. It also pushed them into third place in the table; a position they consolidated with their draw at Queens Park Rangers recently.

Although we chose to play seven of our youth-team regulars against Brighton and Hove Albion when they were the visitors to Upton Park on Tuesday 12th November, the final result was nevertheless a disappointing one as far as we were concerned.
Appearing in a Hammers' shirt for the first time in over a month was Manny Omoyinmi who has just returned from a loan spell with another South Coast club - AFC Bournemouth; whilst Florin Raducioiu was another returnee following his absence through injury. Casting aside the serious off-the-field problems which surround the Sussex Club, Brighton finally ran out convincing winners to inflict our second successive League defeat.
In the opening period honours were evenly shared as each side scored once; Chris Coyne netting for us in the ninth minute. The second-half saw the
Seagulls take command as they scored three times. It was only a converted penalty-kick from Raducioiu, with ten minutes to go, that eventually resulted in our scoring a second goal to reduce the arrears.

For the second time this season; the previous was in our League Cup Group Three fixture, the Reserves were beaten by a strong Arsenal side when they travelled to Highbury on Thursday 28th November for our Avon Insurance Combination League game.
A Hammers' team of mixed experience was not strong enough to withstand the pressure that the Gunners exerted and after taking a one goal interval lead the home side went on to show their domination with a final comprehensive three goals to nil victory. Long term injury absentee Danny Williamson made a welcome return to our colours after an eleven week period whilst Mark Bowen also appeared for the first time in over a month. The strength of the Arsenal side was emphasised by the fact that they have remained undefeated since early in the season and their win against us put them into fourth place in the League table - just two points off the top spot.

After a spell of five Avon Insurance Combination League games the Reserves returned to League Cup Group Three action on Tuesday 3rd December when they visited Carrow Road for their final fixture in the preliminary groupings of the competition.
Amongst our starting line-up were Danny Williamson, who came through his second full 90 minutes in a week after his lengthy absence, whilst Steve Mautone and Steve Jones got their first run-outs after cartilage operations (Jones came on as a substitute at half-time) and Graeme Philson returned to our colours after missing the previous eight weeks of the season. Although playing well enough in the opening 45 minutes we were unable to create any real threat to the Canaries defence and break the deadlock but likewise our own rear-guard remained in control to thwart the home attack.
The second-half saw Williamson's influence increase and we began to dominate. In the 75th minute we finally got the reward that our patience deserved when following a good build-up Manny Omoyinmi broke clear to find Danny Shipp. who turned well to beat his marker and score with a left-foot shot, The solitary goal was enough for us to take the three points and keep us at the head of the table with three wins from our four games. We must now await the results of the final fixtures of both Arsenal (who are In second place in our group table) and Luton Town (in third) to see who progresses to the latter stages of the competition.

The visit of AFC Bournemouth Reserves eight days later renewed acquaintances with two former Hammers' players who were ii the Cherries line-up - Dale Gordon and Mark Watson.
Amongst our team were newly returned Les Sealey, after his spell at Leyton Orient, and three of our younger players who were making their Combination debuts, namely Grant McCann, Danny Fernley and Robert Miller. From the Hammers' viewpoint the highlight of the game, which had been moved from it's original venue to Upton Park, was a hat-trick scored by Danny Shipp with all three of his goals being headed home. Danny opened his account in the 38th minute with the first of his trio but just before half-time Bournemouth equalised through Watson to start the second period all square. Within a minute of the re-start, however we were back in front once again when Shipp headed home another centre from out on the left by Frank Lampard who got to the by-line before crossing. Continuing to press we might well have gone further into the lead as shots from Lampard and Manny Omoyinmi, as they burst through from midfield tested the opposing goalkeeper.
In the 80th minute our continued assault on the Bournemouth goal was finally rewarded when Lampard collected a clearance and started a mazy run from the left hand side of the visitor's penalty-area in which he beat four defenders before sending over a left foot cross to the back post where Shipp was positioned to send his header into the corner of the net.
As we continued to press in the next few minutes we could well have added to our total as Graeme Philson finished a fine run following his moving up after intercepting in midfield, with a right foot shot that went narrowly wide of the goalkeeper's left hand post whilst a left foot effort from Lampard went just over the crossbar. In the last few minutes the visitors pulled one back to reduce their arrears.

The Reserves' trip to The Dell for their Combination League encounter with Southampton was delayed by 24 hours because of the senior teams' Coca-Cola Cup replay at Stockport County which was scheduled for the same evening.
Despite having at least as equal a share of the exchanges as their hosts. Hammers were unable to turn the opportunities they created into positive results whilst the Saints were able to reap the rewards of their endeavours. Three goals in the first-half meant that we had an uphill task after the interval and although throughout the whole of the proceedings we sent in plenty of crosses, our front-men were unable to finish off the chances made and reduce our arrears. Our ill-luck continued when we hit the crossbar with a fine effort only to see the rebound cleared to safety.
The three goal advantage that Southampton obtained in the opening period somewhat flattered the narrow difference between the two sides and despite even more pressure in the later stages of the match, we could not penetrate their rear-guard and subsequently fell further behind when they broke away and scored a fourth goal to inflict upon us our biggest defeat of the season.

Postponed : Frozen Pitch

The Reserves' Avon Insurance Combination League fixture against Watford which had been put back by 24-hours from its original scheduled date of Tuesday 7th to Wednesday 8th, finally fell victim; like the majority of games last week; to the adverse weather conditions. Although moved from the Victoria Road Ground, Dagenham to Upton Park earlier in the month the match still had to be postponed when the bitter cold conditions resulted in the Boleyn Ground pitch becoming frozen and deemed unsafe in the circumstances.

Despite the FA Cup Third Round tie at Upton Park on Wednesday 15th January being postponed due to fog, our reserve-team were able to complete their away Combination match against Norwich City, after travelling to Norfolk the same evening despite the match originally being called off as well.
The circumstances in which the fixture was finally completed however, proved to be almost stranger than fiction. The referee, Mr. Bill Jordan, declared at 7 p.m.; 30 minutes before the scheduled kick-off time; that the match would not take place due to the possibility of fog coming down before the final whistle and left to go home. As the pitch was in good condition and both goals and all four comer-flags could be seen, as well as both clubs being desperate to play the game because of the long lay-off due to the Christmas break and then postponements resulting from the freezing weather conditions of early January, they mutually agreed; with the permission of the Secretary of The Combination who was present; to play the match.  Mr. Neville Chamberlain, the Combination Secretary, did say that the match might have to be classified as a friendly but subsequently it has been agreed that it stands as a Combination League fixture. Norwich City therefore called upon a local referee and two assistant referees to officiate to the delight of about 1,000 fans who had turned up to watch.
At 7.50 p.m. the game finally kicked-off and we found ourselves two goals down after 29 minutes; both goals being scored by the Canaries in a ten minute spe
ll by their Swedish triallist, striker Ulf Ottosson. Within a minute we had pulled one back when a move down the left resulted in a square ball from Rio Ferdinand reaching Lee Boylan who scored with a right-foot shot from close in.
After the interval we gained more possession by cutting out the errors that had marred an otherwise competent performance with the result that after 69 minutes we equalised. Lee Hodges broke from midfield and sent a defence splitting pass through to Ferdinand who coolly drew the goalkeeper before scoring. With two minutes to go before the final whistle a long ball out of defence was headed on by Ferdinand to Boylan. Our Republic of Ireland Youth international himself nodded on the pass to outpace the Canaries rear-guard before, crashing a first time volley into the top comer of the net from the edge of the penalty-area. As Coach Tony Carr said afterwards; "It was one of the finest goals I've seen for a long finish the game. It  crowned a great recovery by our lads to take the points."
Amongst our starting line - up were eight members of our youth squad; and a further three were on the subs, bench - two of whom made second-half appearances.

After two weeks without a game, the Reserves travelled to South London on Tuesday 28th January for their away Avon Combination League match against Millwall.
'Comprised mainly of Y
outh squad members, our team found themselves two goals down at the interval against much stronger and more experienced opponents. The Lions then went further ahead as they netted for a third time before our youngsters fought back with two late goals to give the home side a scare as we nearly grabbed-a point.
In a spirited late rally. Lee Hodges put a through ball into Craig Etherington who moved between two defenders before scoring in the 80th minute. Five minutes later, Hodges himself worked his way into the opposing penalty-area and was brought down. From the resulting spot-kick Lee Boylan fired home to reduce the arrears. It was the Irish Youth international's third successive successful penalty conversion.
With just a minute left before the end, a move down the flank resulted in a centre being flashed across the face of the Millwall goal which only required a touch to net the equaliser, buy unfortunately the ball eluded everybody before being cleared to safety.

Chelsea were the visitors to Upton Park in another League match put back from the 21st January. The most notable feature of the game as far as the Hammers' supporters were concerned, was the debut of recent signing Paul Kitson. Our capture from Newcastle played for 62 minutes in order to get some much-needed match practice, before his proposed senior debut against Derby County.
Our goalkeeper Neil Finn was required to make a number of good saves in the first-half in order to keep us on level terms at the interval. He then made an excellent reflex save a: the start of the second period to once again deny the visitors.
Unfortunately 15 minutes into the second-half, Neil had no chance to intercept a cross knocked into our penalty-area, following a move down the Chelsea left after we lost the ball in midfield. This resulted in the Blues scoring at the far post as the ball was crashed into the roof of the net from just inside the six-yard box. Finn then made another fine stop when he parried away a flashing 25-yarder following a move down the opposite flank.
Although we had a number of opportunities from then on, as Lee Hodges, Keith Rowland and Manny Omoyinmi probed the Chelsea rearguard, we were unable to create a clear cut chance or finish with a shot on target to bring us back on terms. Finn once again was called upon to block another Blues' effort as he sped off his line when a chip over the top of our defence left a Chelsea forward in the clear.
The victory enabled Chelsea to secure three valuable points which pushed them into second place in. the table, level on points with top dogs Spurs who have a superior goal-difference from the same number-of games.

Postponements

The Reserves were due to meet our South London rivals Charlton Athletic last Tuesday, the 18th February, for a home Avon Insurance Combination League match at The Victoria Road Ground, Dagenham but on the previous evening the pitch had been used for another game and had cut up rather badly. This fact coupled with the overnight rain and stormy weather conditions, as well as the prevailing high winds that blew for most of the rest the night throughout Essex, made the pitch unplayable and it was decided early on the Tuesday morning to call the game off.
This latest cancellation means that we now have to re-arrange two home fixtures in the League competition with the resulting effect that we shall have six home matches to three away in our final nine League games.

Over the last couple of weeks the Reserves have played twice in the Avon Insurance Combination League, both fixtures being against opposition from the metropolis.
The game against Queens Park Rangers due to be played on the afternoon of Tuesday 25th February at Dagenham was finally switched to Upton Park with the kick-off time put back to a 7pm start. For two of our long term injury absentees it proved to be an opportunity for them to finally return to our colours after many months spent recuperating from one or more operations.
Sidelined since before the start of the current campaign with a nagging foot injury Richard Hall played for 80 minutes before being substituted whilst Scott Mean played for only five minutes less as he made an appearance in a Hammers' shirt for the first time.
We opened the scoring through Hugo Porfirio in the 37th minute and went two up when Ian Dowie scored in the 75th minute following his first appearance since going into plaster for a hairline leg fracture in early December. Five minutes before the final whistle Lee Hodges added a third, his first of the season, to round off a comfortable victory.

Avon Insurance Combination League leaders, Portsmouth, showed exactly why they are currently topping the table when they visited Upton Park on the afternoon of Tuesday 18th March.
Although our young squad did well in holding the visitors goalless until the 70th minute or so Pompey :with former Hammers Martin Allen and Adrian Whitbread in their side; then broke the deadlock, following a defensive mix-up. Eight minutes later they added a second and increased their tally even further when they intercepted a back-pass and ran on to slot the ball home for a third time. By the final whistle they were four goals in front to run out worthy winners on the day and consolidate their position at the top.
For England Youth goalkeeper Luke Weaver, on loan from Leyton Orient, it was an unhappy conclusion to his first game in our colours. Before Portsmouth had scored their first goal, Luke had made a number of good saves.

With a Carling Premiership match the following evening, as well as having a number of players missing through injury and suspension, we were forced to field a team that was comprised entirely of members from our Youth Squad for the visit of Swindon Town for our Avon Insurance Combination League game at Dagenham on the afternoon of Tuesday 8th April.
Although our youngsters did well in holding the visitors for most of the first-half - as well as taking a twelfth minute lead - the West Countrymen finally proved too strong and ended the match as winners. As early as the 10
th minute Danny Bartley might have put us into the lead but our lads finally got a well deserved boost two minutes later. Bringing the ball out of defence we attacked down our left flank and Robert Miller floated a pass over the Swindon rear-guard for winger Grant McCann to run onto before he lobbed his shot over the visitor's goalkeeper from just outside the penalty area.
Continuing to attack we might have gone further ahead in the next few minutes as Lee Boylan twice went close with good efforts. On both occasions he hit the side netting as first he latched onto a header from Chris Coyne, following a corner, and then fought off a challenge from a Swindon defender before firing in a shot after receiving Bartley's centre from the right wing. After an aerial clash with the Swindon goalkeeper Boylan needed treatment as he fell awkwardly injuring his back.
Swindon Town then came more into the game and Alex O'Reilly our 17-year-old goalkeeper was called upon to make a couple of good saves. Continuing to press the visitors finally levelled things up five minutes before the interval when a defensive slip-up resulted in Miller losing out in a challenge and the ball was crossed into our penalty box before it was fired home.
The opening minutes of the second-half once again saw O'Reilly in action but he was unable to prevent the Wiltshire side taking the lead as a left-foot cross from their right flank was headed home in the 54th minute. Exchanges became more end-to-end and our best opportunity of an equaliser fell to Bartley whose shot brought a good save from the visiting 'keeper.
With under ten minutes to go Swindon extended their margin to 1-3 to seal the points and, in the end, it was a disappointing finish to what had been a bright start from our young XI.

Once again circumstances dictated that we were forced to field a team that was comprised almost entirely of members from our Youth Squad; the two exceptions being Manny Omoyinmi and Scott Mean; when Tottenham Hotspur were the visitors for our Avon Insurance Combination League Cup semi-final tie at Upton Park on the afternoon of Wednesday 16th April.
A much stronger Spurs side took the lead in the fifth minute but our youngsters did well in holding the visitors for most of the rest of the conceding a converted penalty two minutes before the interval. Staging a fight-back we then reduced the deficit six minutes into the second period when following a free-kick
from just outside the left hand side of the penalty area to the back post Chris Coyne chested the ball down before crashing home a right foot shot.
Coming more into the game we eventually pulled a second goal back when Chris Sains, back after his loan period at Southend, got down our right flank into open space and crossed into the middle where one of the Spurs defenders in attempting to clear spectacularly crashed the ball into his own net.
After such good and hard endeavours in getting back into the game our lads were completely devastated as they once again fell behind when Coyne turned from hero to the villain of the afternoon. Taking a free-kick just inside his own half near the centre circle our central defender had his attempted pass out to the right wing intercepted and with our defence pushing up the Spurs player simply had to run on into our goal area before slotting the ball past the advancing Alex O'Reilly.
Despite the setback we once again tried to draw level, but a further defensive error on our right hand side led to a fourth Tottenham goal as a cross to the far post was knocked home in the 75th minute. With six minutes to go the Tottenham attack once more were able to break through our rear
-guard down their left and rounded off the proceedings with a fifth and final strike when scoring from just outside our six-yard box.
In the final of the competition, which was revived this season after an absence of many years, Tottenham Hotspur will meet Wimbledon who beat Oxford United by two goals to one in the other semi-final to make it a North versus South London affair.

With the importance of our Premiership match at Filbert Street two days later very much in mind, circumstances dictated that once again we were forced to field a team that was comprised almost entirely of members from our Youth Section (the only exception being Scott Mean who is still gaining match fitness after his long absence with a serious leg injury),when Charlton Athletic provided the opposition for our Avon Insurance Combination League game at Upton Park on the afternoon of Monday 21st April.
Charlton took the lead in the opening period but 1st Year YTS striker Gary Alexander struck back in the 20th minute to give us a well deserved equaliser before we conceded a second goal to turn around at the interval 1-2 in arrears. A couple of further goals in the second period gave the visitors a comfortable victory although we might ourselves have got a couple of additional goals with a little more luck.

AWAY FIXTURE PLAYED AT HOME

Four days later we played our final away match of this campaign - at Upton Park. The game - against Tottenham Hotspur - had originally been scheduled for the previous week at St. Albans City's ground where Spurs play their reserve-team fixtures, but had to be postponed from Monday 14th April as our Combination Cup semi-final tie with the North Londoners which was scheduled for the 16th, took priority. As they could not offer a new date for the League fixture at home they conceded ground advantage in order that we both might fulfil our commitments before the end of the season.
As in our semi-final encounter nine days previously, the Tottenham team proved to be too strong for our side which included a couple of triallists from Liverpool. We found ourselves struggling to make an impression on the North Londoners who were in fourth place in the table at the start of the proceedings.
A goal up at the half-time interval Tottenham added another two in the second 45 minutes.
