Our delayed visit to Wokingham Town ended with our young side running out comfortable 6-0 victors.
The home side proved to be not as strong opposition as our opponents in our first two matches. We opened the scoring in the third minute when a Steven Blaney cross was netted by Lee Hodges. Chris Moors added a second when he converted a near post header following a Paul Mitchell cross to give us a 2-0 interval lead. Four minutes after the break Moors added another when he left-footed home a Hodges cut back. Danny Shipp then eluded the home side's offside trap to score and Manny Omoyinmi did the same following a Frank Lampard pass.
With five minutes to go Moors completed his hat trick when he latched onto another Lampard through ball and beat the home goalkeeper in a one-to-one situation.
Although it was a fairly easy win, with goalkeeper Jerome John not having to make a notable save, it was nevertheless pleasing to see the manner and application that our youngsters displayed in securing their victory.

The visit to Sutton United, although ending in defeat provided valuable experience for our very young side which comprised solely youth squad players.
Surton were older, stronger and more physical than our youngsters are normally used to, but we held our own for the first 45 minutes during which Martyn Mullen had a good shot turned aside.
After the interval Frank Lampard created a chance for Danny Shipp but the striker screwed his shot wide. On the hour the home side took the lead with a header following a corner, but we might have levelled if Manny Omoyinmi had not shot into the side netting or had a second effort saved.
Having used our substitute we then had to play out the final twelve minutes of the game with ten men, when Chris Moors was forced to leave the field with a suspected broken nose.
Team manager, Paul Hilton, was nevertheless delighted with the performance of his young proteges enthusing: "The match provided us with everything we hoped for in joining the Capital League this season and will give our younger players the valuable experience they need in their development."

Our fixture at Southend United saw our American 'keeper Ian Feuer team-up with Canadian triallist Martin Nash. Although only 18-years-old, Martin has already been capped by Canada at Under-21. Our strong side proved too powerful for the Seasiders to handle, but we were denied an emphatic victory by the brilliance of their 'keeper. But for him, the Hammers could have been four, or five goals ahead by half-time, instead of going in at 0-0. We continued to dominate and eventually broke the deadlock in the 63th minute when a corner was knocked down to David Platt who fired a left-foot shot across the area where Nash pounced to score from six yards.
With 15 minutes left, Ian Bishop scored our second with a 25-yard direct free-kick that rocketed over the Southend wall into the top corner of the net.

Our first home game in the Capital League saw the visit of Wycombe Wanderers to Chadwell Heath on Wednesday 12th October. The Blues had started the season with five straight wins, conceding only three goals in the process.
The West Ham United team, containing eight youth squad players, played well in the first half without creating many chances, but also denied the visitors any opportunities to dominate. We might have taken the lead in the opening minute of the second half when Wayne Joscelyne was unlucky with a header. However, from then onwards Wycombe opened up and began to assert themselves with their physical presence. In a ten minute period midway through the half they scored twice and although our youngsters endeavoured to get back into the game, some disappointing finishing prevented this happening.
With six minutes left, our best opportunity fell to Malcolm McPherson - coming on as a substitute in the first game back following an ankle injury -who had met a right wing cross from David Pratt, but the former Yeovil forward was unable to reduce our arrears. Team manager Paul Hilton, although disappointed with the final result nevertheless was pleased that the standard of play in the League is giving our younger players a great deal more experience than they would otherwise get.

Against Colchester United we welcomed back long-term injuried players Dale Gordon and Scott Canham, while Trevor Morley was also in the side after a cartilage operation.
In an evenly-balanced game, both sides created good early scoring chances with our best opportunities falling to Gordon, Morley and Malcolm McPherson. But it was Colchester who took the lead ten minutes before the interval when their manager George Burley, the former Ipswich Town full-back, crashed home a 30 yard free-kick into the top corner of the net.
In the second-half, we did not create as many chances as we had in the first and had to wait until the 61st minute before Frank Lampard threatened Colchester's goal.
Six minutes later, West Ham equalised when David Pratt put McPherson through and although his shot was parried by the goalkeeper, the ball was pushed on to a defender who could not avoid knocking it into his own net.
Although we continued to threaten occasionally, Colchester had the better chances during the remainder of the match. But with five minutes to go, substitute Lee Hodges might have won it for us, but he was unlucky with his shot.
The most pleasing part of the day's play; apart from the point achieved; was that pur three returnees came through without any ill-effects and hopefully will now progress to full match fitness.

West Ham travelled to Roots Hall to play Southend United in the President's Cup. The Seasiders had the better of the early exchanges and would have scored but for several fine saves by our 'keeper Ian Feuer. The Hammers went ahead in the 51st minute after a challenge by Matt Holland resulted in the ball being knocked down to Malcolm McPherson who turned on it and shot home.
Ian Feuer made another couple of good saves before Mattie Holmes crossed a superb ball into the area for Danny Shipp to head home our second with 13 minutes of the game left.

Returning to Capital League action four days later, we found ourselves two goals down just after half-time to a physically stronger Welling United. Due to injuries and other commitments, West Ham were forced to play eight Youth team members and Danny Shipp as a central-defender. Two goals from Chris Moors pulled the Hammers back on level terms, but although we had a couple of other good scoring opportunities it was Welling who scored again.
In the last minute we rescued a point when following a corner substitute Peter Kydd knocked the ball back into the box where Anthony Browne smashed it home from close range. After a disappointing first-half performance, it was a good result for our youngsters who fought back from two down.

A number of injuries forced manager Paul Hilton to field a very young side for the visit of Barnet to Chadwell Heath. Such was the situation that Paul named himself as one of the substitutes.
Our youngsters played well during the first-half, despite going a goal down after only four minutes. We created a number of chances, but was denied by the Barnet 'keeper who made a number of excellent saves particularly from Frank Lampard's 25 yard shot and Chris Moors volley from the edge of the area. The 'keeper also did well to spread himself and foil Malcolm McPherson and then make another great save from a Lee Hodges piledriver.
West Ham finally drew level when Hodges crossed from the left and Moors knocked the ball down at the near post and scored.
Just after half-time Matt Holland had a shot, following a corner, which was flicked over the top by the Barnet 'keeper.
The visitors then hit back and scored following a defensive mix-up, before Moors was again denied a goal by yet another fine save by the Barnet 'keeper.
Gradually, Barnet's strength and experience took its toll and they scored twice more before the end.

Eight weeks had elapsed since our last fixture in the Capital League when Barnet visited Chadwell Heath on Wednesday 18th January.
Although classed as an "away" match, Barnet agreed to play at our venue in order to clear the fixture. The final result was a comfortable 3-0 victory for the Hammers although Ian Feuer in our goal did have to make several good saves - especially three during the first-half - to ensure our recording a clean sheet.
After only two minutes Trevor Morley had a header saved from a Malcolm McPherson left-wing cross. Martin Allen then went close with a 30 yard drive and Morley was denied an opening goal when a teammate was adjudged offside as he put the ball in the net.
The deadlock was finally broken when Alien was put through by Darren Currie and scored with a shot inside the far post.
The second-half opened with the visitors heading against the crossbar, but within a minute we increased our lead when Morley ran onto a pass which Martin Allen threaded between two defenders and scored with a right foot shot from just inside the area.
Alien wrapped the game up in the 54th minute when he headed home a Danny Williamson cross clipped in from the right following a corner which had only been partially cleared.

Seven days later Southend United were the visitors and played their part in an entertaining contest considering the conditions. An already heavy pitch was not helped by the persistent drizzling rain that fell throughout the game.
Although we had a more experienced team it was Southend who had the first opportunity to score when they hit the crossbar with a header. With 25 minutes gone, the Hammers broke out of defence following a Southend corner and Trevor Morley sent Don Hutchison through who then put Julian Dicks in to score with a left foot shot. It was not until six minutes into the second-half that we added a second when Morley had a shot parried away and Malcolm McPherson was on hand to knock the rebound in. Four minutes later, the Seasiders reduced their arrears when they tapped home a rebound following an Ian Feuer stop that he could only push away.
With 66 minutes gone, Darren Currie worked the ball down the left to Danny Williamson whose shot seemed to be going in, but Martin Allen running in ensured it crossed the line to make it 3-1. The only areas where passing football could be played was down the flanks as by this time the centre of the pitch had got considerably worse as it cut up under the appalling conditions. The heaviness of the ground resulted in our fourth goal when a back-pass from a defender got stuck in the mud and Trevor Morley nipped in to collect the ball and put it past the stranded visiting 'keeper. With three minutes to the final whistle, Southend got a second goal with a knock-in at the back post.

The visit to Cambridge United's ground on 8th February, saw the Hammers include two triallists in their lineup. Tom Weston is an Under-16 County player, whilst Lee McRobert is a 22-years-old midfielder from Sittingbourne. The recent rain had made the pitch very soggy, but generally conditions were not too bad. During the first-half, we had one goal disallowed and hit the bar and crossbar on two other occasions. Then after all that West Ham pressure it was Cambridge who took the lead in the 38th minute. Eight minutes into the second-half, Lee Hodges levelled the score when he got in behind the home defence, as they pushed up, and scored with a fine shot. Two goals in four minutes by Danny Shipp then eased us ahead.
In the 67th minute Danny cut in from the right-wing hit his shot home and then made it 3-1 four minutes later when he headed home a Steven Blaney cross from the right.
With 14 minutes of the match remaining, Lee Hodges scored his second goal of the game when he cut in from the left-wing and hit a 25 yard effort into the top corner of the net. Although we had taken a convincing lead, Cambridge nevertheless had not been without opportunities to score and a couple of times our defenders were forced to clear off our goal-line and then seen another effort hit the crossbar.
with nine minutes to go Cambridge reduced the deficit to two goals and then five minutes later scored again to make it 4-3. The young Hammers held out or the remaining few minutes to record a welcome victory, but one gained with a disappointing team performance, according to team-manager Paul Hilton.
