Previous meetings with the Vauxhall Division Two Club during the last two seasons produced 6-0 and 4-3 wins for the Hammers. However, the Borough made up for it on this occasion, and were convincing winners against a team mainly composed of young pros and youth squad members.

Enfield have a new player-manager in charge of their Made in the Vauxhall League Premier Division. And Peter Taylor set his team a good example by scoring at the end of a third-minute solo run. Macari equalised on the stroke of half-time and a draw appeared to be the likely result. But poor defence 'gifted' a winner to Enfield with two minutes left on the clock. Three former Hammers were in the Enfield side: goalkeeper Kingsley Banks and defenders Curtis Warmington (former youth squad) and Paul Brush.

Sharp-shooter Trevor Morley saw the Hammers scrape home after a tough test from Third Division Southend United. Morley struck twice in the second half with a close-range shot and fierce header after 65 and 70 minutes to open up a decisive 3-1 lead. But early on it was Southend who posed most threats against a Hammers defence rescued time and again by powerhouse Julian Dicks. Southend went in front after 13 minutes, when new striker Brett Angel! headed in at the far post. Dicks equalised from the penalty spot seven minutes later, but it was West Ham who looked most grateful for the half-time breather. Morley's neat finishing and the speed and imagination of Kevin Keen on the right then helped the Hammers take control of the game. Angell pulled a goal back for Southend.

They took the lead m the 14th minute but West Ham equalised eight minutes later when Julian Dicks converted a penalty. Goals by Morley (60, 66mins.) put the Hammers well in command, before Southend hit back to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes to go.

Frank McAvennie the Scottish striker anxious to prove that his career has a bright future as well as a high priced past, rammed a three goal warning as he helped Hammers to a 4-1 warm up win at Gillingham. McAvennie looked sharp enough at Gillingham powering  the  first goal  after  five  minutes from 20 yards when the ball was nodded back by Martin Allen. He added the second just five minutes later heading home a free kick from Keen. Hammers looked the better side for most of the game but Gillingham threatened a fight back as Steve Lovell opened their account after 65 minutes. However within three minutes McAvennie hammered No 3 after Julian Dicks had opened the Gills defence. More pressure from the Hammers saw Morley bring great saves from 'keeper Harvey Lim but they completed their tally four mintues from the final whistle. In form Dicks again made the opening for Jimmy Quinn to hit the target from 25 yards.

Our second match on the same evening sent another squad into Kent for a meeting with Southern Leaguers, Gravesend. The starting line-up included several making their first appearance in pre-season games; all came safely through the test, although Robson sustained a broken nose in a goalmouth collision following a corner-kick. The home side took the lead after a goalless first half, but two from Macari and one by Matsu made the final count 3-1 to us. The two Japanese players are here for three months, and have made promising debuts.

An entertaining afternoon of soccer with several ex-Hammers returning to support their former colleague; they included Bobby Barnes, Alan Devonshire, Frank Lampard and Geoff Pike among the Ipswich subs, as well as 'Bonzo', Trevor Brooking and youth coach Paul Hilton on our side . . . and Ray Stewart was back in action! Billy Bonds turned back the clock 23 years to produce a typical swashbuckling performance in his own testimonial against Spurs. For 67 minutes Bonzo inspired a West Ham side bolstered by special guests, and former Hammers’ favourites Alan Devonshire, Frank Lampard and Phil Parkes.
And the game seemed to be heading for a 4-4 draw until West Ham were awarded a penalty after Tuttle handled, and up stepped Bill to score the winner from the spot. The East London rain couldn’t spoil another great night for the manager, who afterwards paid tribute to the 10,443 fans who turned out to salute him one more time.

A crowd of 4,437 fans turned out for Paul Hilton’s testimonial match which brought down the final curtain on the season, about half of what might have been expected had the title come to Upton Park two days earlier.
Those who bothered were treated to an often excellent display, with Palace fielding their full squad and playing with a pace and purpose which, if lacking the steel of real competition, showed their hosts what they will have to live with in Division One next season. After Rosenior had hit a post, Frank McAvennie put the Hammers ahead after 18 minutes, and Salako laid on the pass for Geoff Thomas to equalise two minutes later.
But the Hammers opened up a 3-1 lead through the Czech international trialist Karel Kula and the beneficiary Hilton, who left the field after 30 minutes to loud applause.
Andy Gray blazed a penalty kick wide just after the break when Palace had more of the game. In the closing stages Ian Wright touched in Palace’s second after Mark Bright’s cross was nodded down by Salako.
