West Ham were 2-0 ahead and then twice behind before sharing eight goals in the friendly at Billericay.
Simon Livett and Dean Martin put Hammers ahead, but Billericay came back to level it at 2-2. Just before half-time Trevor Morley missed a penalty for the visitors, the goalkeeper parrying his spot-kick and Morley then headed the rebound against the bar.
Billericay went in front immediately after the interval, during which West Ham made several substitutions. Michael Basham equalised and, after the home team had again taken the lead, Livett made it a final 4-4.

Hammers' pre-season programme continued with this unimpressive display at rain swept Gillingham, and just about the only consolation for the visitors was they came out of it without any additions to a worrying injury list.
Mark O'Connor gave Gillingham the lead after only seven minutes and 13 minutes later Steve Lovell added a second against a West Ham line-up playing five across the back. Leroy Rosenior cut the deficit before the interval, but in the second period gaols from Carl Esley and sub Andy Arnott sealed an emphatic Gillingham win.

A very young West Ham squad battled hard in the game against Purfleet and might have taken a draw. They trailed to a Matt Holland own goal and then conceded a bad second. Matthew Rush rocked the home bar and Simon Clarke had a good volley well saved but Hammers were still two down at the break.
After the interval John Padington got down the right and crossed for Tony Comerford to head home. Sub Tony Richards, back in action after breaking an ankle in last season's final game, was foiled when through with the goalkeeper to beat, and Simon Clarke rounded the goalkeeper but hit the side netting.

Ticket dated July
West Ham ended Southend United's pre-season programme with a 2-0 victory in front of a bumper 6,208 gate. Blues had been unbeaten in all their build-up matches but it was Hammers boss Billy Bonds who was left sporting the broadest smile after his men ended a nightmare run.
Both West Ham goals saw Southend's defence caught out from swiftly taken free-kicks - Leroy Rosenior pouncing to drive in after 14 minutes, and Frank McAvennie, who had an otherwise quite game, wrapped it all up with a clinical, classy finish two minutes from time.

West Ham led 3-2 at the interval. Their other goals coming from Clarke (2), Dean Martin (2), Matthew Holland, Tony Comerford and John Brunning.

The United States' under-20 national team paid a New Year visit to England, and was scheduled to play three fixtures against Spurs, Luton Town and ourselves. The squad was in the charge of ex-Hammer Bobby Howe who has been appointed as the North American youngsters' manager; and the tour was arranged in conjunction with the FA, for whom Bobby's brother-in-law Trevor Hartley (also a former Hammer) is now working after coaching at Spurs. The game at our Chadwell Heath ground on the morning of Saturday, December 28th was against an XI consisting of younger pros with a leavening of senior experience.
A goalless first half was marred by a dual injury when, on the half-hour, John Purdie and an opponent collided. The American youngster eventually ended in hospital with a bad leg-break, and after plastering was flown back to the USA for further treatment. Purdie also went for an X-ray on his thigh, but has subsequently resumed training.
In the circumstances, it was understandable that the remainder of the game was played in a rather subdued atmosphere. However, there were a couple of goals, and one each from Simon Livett and Simon Clarke settled the outcome in our favour.

The Bolivians had been in the Final of this competition on the four previous occasions. In 1988, '89 and '90 they had won the cup and last year were runners-up.
We had the better of the exchanges in the first 30 minutes and Paul Whitmarsh scored - only to have it disallowed for offside. After 35 minutes he gave us the lead but two minutes before the interval the South Americans equalised when a Paul Marquis backpass was intercepted and although Keith Small did well to close down the opposing forward, he scored with a skilful shot in off the far post. With 15 minutes to go Dean Martin exchanged passes with substitute Michael Basham and curled a delightful left- foot shot into the net to secure the trophy and end an enjoyable and rewarding trip to Texas.

It was a night to remember for Stewart and for his former manager John Lyall, who was returning first time to the club he had served for 34 years before he was sacked. The evening also saw the return of a couple of players from Lyall’s successful 1985-86 claret and blue squad: striker Paul Goddard and midfielder Steve Whitton. Another name who would be familiar to Hammers' fans, was Ipswich Town’s goalkeeper, Craig Forrest who would later move from Suffolk to east London in July 1997.
Paul Goddard’s opening goal for Town after 5 minutes was against the run of play, a pass by Kiwonya and a cross by Johnson saw the former Hammer score with a tap in.
A minute into the second half and skipper for the night Neil Thompson crossed and Miklosko failed to catch cleanly, Whelan scored from close range.
On 76 minutes, Stewart, once a record breaking penalty taker with the Hammers, was given a chance to have a crack for the spot kick after Thompson had fouled Brown. ‘Tonka’ thumped the ball to Forrest’s right and it appeared as if the amiable Canadian keeper dived the other way deliberately so as to provide a fitting climax for the one time penalty king of Upton Park. Stewart was then substituted and left the field to take the applause of an appreciative crowd.

CHARLTON ATHLETIC
During the 1991–92 season, Charlton Athletic played their home matches at Upton Park. This arrangement was part of a ground-sharing deal due to Charlton's departure from The Valley in 1985, following safety concerns and financial difficulties. Charlton remained at Upton Park until December 1992, when they returned to a refurbished Valley.
The 1991–92 campaign was notable for Charlton finishing 7th in the Second Division, narrowly missing out on the play-offs after a late-season dip in form.
