Divisional leaders Oxford United were undefeated prior to our visit to the Brasenose College ground, and they had no great difficulty in adding to their previous successes on this occasion. Two goals in each half made them 4-0 winners.

The Juniors had an easy win at Chadwell Heath on September 22. Leading by 2-0 at half-lime against Reading, we made it 3-0 before the end of a good showing. Peter Wheelband scored twice, and Chris Patten once. Their performance was the best of the season so far.

The opposition for a Junior Division Cup (First Round) fixture was Oxford United — on their ground at Brasenose College. The home  sides have a four-matches four-wins record in their League games so far (scoring twelve against three), but to their surprise were defeated two-nil, Chris Patten and Simon Livett (from a penalty! scored our goals, which made it a happy homeward journey for our youngsters.

6 October 1984

Overall P., Massey J., Attwood, Livett, Short R., Wheelband, Dutton, Slater, Fletcher S. (Walker), Pye, Barden

As Southend United's home ground was not available, our Juniors' fixture was switched to Chadwell Heath Ground. We took a one-nil interval lead and went on to finish 3-1 ahead at the end of an interesting encounter. David Dutton scored two of ours; the Hammers' third goal was a really excellent one by Stuart Slater.

Dudley, Massey, Barden, Apps, Short, Walker, Dutton, Patten, Fletcher, Livett, Bennett

A 3-2 win against Crystal Palace at Chadwell Heath moved our Juniors into fifth place with a record of played 8, won 4, drawn 1, lost 3, goals 16-16.
Leaders Oxford United dropped their first point last Saturday, and head the standings with 15 points from eight games.

BRENTFORD

17 November 1984

Ramsey, Massey, Barden, Livett, Short, Wheelband, Patten, Apps, Slater, Pye, Bennett

Eight goals were scored in our Juniors' match at Chadwell Heath but as the visiting Brentford team netted five of them it was the West Londoners who took the points. The Bees had much the better of the first half, being three up by the time the interval arrived. The second half produced a better performance on our part and goals by Peter Wheelband Itwo) and Stuart Slater were just reward for the Hammers' efforts.

1 December 1984

Ramsey, Bennett, Sexton, Short, Eldridge, Wheelband, Livett, Apps, Patten (St Pier), Pye, Dutton

The result of our away match v Swindon Town on Dec. 1 was incorrectly given in some press summaries as a 2-2 draw. We actually won 3-0 - a somewhat different picture! Chris Patten scored in the first half, with Jason Apps and David Dutton settling the issue with goals in the last seven minutes.

After several delays due to unfit pitches, we played the Second Round tie in the Junior League Cup at Bristol Rovers' Hambrook ground. A comfortable 4-0 victory ensured the Hammers' place in the semi-final. Our scorers were Slater, Haque (2). St Pier.

Our Juniors played on a pitch adjoining the seniors' at Chadwell Heath, so the foggy conditions were identical for their match against Divisional leaders Oxford United.
This gave us an opportunity to include Paul Crumpton, who has been out injured for some weeks. He played for the majority of the game, so we hope he will be available for regular selection in future. The game ended scoreless, with the respective defences coping well with their opposing attackers.

Our only match to take place on January 12 was against Reading Juniors at their Kensington Road Ground. Simon Livett scored for us in the first half, but the home sides netted three times in return. There was no further scoring after the interval, so we lost 3-1.

26 January 1985

Ramsey, Massey, Linnell, Sexton, Short, Eldridge, Livett, Fletcher (Purll), Haque, St Pier, Barden

Michael Eldridge scored his first goal of the season for our Juniors on the 26 January, but it did not counterbalance the three netted by Spurs at our Chadwell Heath Ground. Generally the visitors were on top before the interval, but the Hammers battled well to hold them scoreless throughout the second half.

WIMBLEDON

2 February 1985

Banks, Massey, Linnell, McQueen, Short, Shaw (Purll), Fletcher, Apps, Haque, St Pier, Barden

It was a middle-of-the-table clash when our junior side opposed Wimbledon at Chadwell Heath on February 2. We included a few newcomers; they did well, but two goals by the Dons during the first half sufficed to give the visitors a victory and the points. We had no game scheduled for February 9, but it would in any event have probably been cancelled due to the snow.

Postponements

We had no game scheduled for February 9, but it would in any event have probably been cancelled due to the snow. The continuing bad weather conditions compelled the postponement of all four of our matches on February 16. In addition to the first teams FA Cup tie our Combination fixture against Birmingham City (home), and the S.E. Counties League engagements versus Queens Park Rangers (away) and Brentford (away) also went on the deferred list.

Our Juniors have had a mixed bag of fortune during the preceding weeks. On March 9 the Crystal Palace team were deserving winners at Mitcham. The Glaziers scored once in each half whilst our side rarely looked like finding the net.

Bracey, Barden, Wheelband P., Sexton, Short, Eldridge, Livett, Fletecher (Haque), Patten (Linnell), St Pier, Pye

There was a better performance at Chadwell Heath on the following Saturday. A much more interesting game produced five goals; we won by 3-2 after leading 2-1 at the interval. Our scorers were Michael Eldridge, Chris Patten and Russell Short.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION

Overall P., Massey, St Pier, Short, Eldridge, Barden, Abrahamson, Sexton, Patten, Haque (Fletcher), Slater

Our fluctuating form in this Division was amply illustrated by the fact that we conceded four goals to Brighton and Hove Albion in the first half of the game at Lancing College on March 23. We held the Seasiders to a goalless second half, but the 0-4 final score-line looked grim on paper.

Although we took an early lead against Brentford Juniors at Upton Park on April 1, the Bees scored twice before half time in the Divisional Cup Semi-Final.

It was a much different story during the second half, as we dominated proceedings to gain a 4-2 victory. David Dutton had a hand in three goals; apart from scoring twice he was also tripped in the penalty-area (for which offence Paul Ince converted the spot-kick). Mark Pye was our other scorer.

Our concluding League fixture of the season was against Brentford at Northolt. The Bees were out to avenge their Cup semi-final defeat, and a 2-0 interval lead put them in with a great chance. However, a second-half hat-trick by Steve Fletcher offset the lead, although Brentford got another to make it 3-3. We missed a penalty in the closing minutes, so had to settle for a sharing of the points.

We played the two legs of our Final against Brighton & Hove Albion Juniors on April 22 and 25.

The first meeting was at Upton Park and ended at two goals apiece. The fact that the Seagulls were level at the end of 90 minutes largely hinged upon the fact that we were not awarded a penalty-kick some 10 minutes after the kick-off while the visitors got one five minutes from the end.

The literally unanimous opinion of the spectators and neutral observers was that the first incident raised no doubts as to the offence committed, whilst that near the end was the outcome of a pre-conceived "dive". Albion scored once before the interval, but we took a second-half lead through David Walker and Stuart Slater.

The over-robust Seasiders had the benefit of ground advantage and the same benevolent official-in-charge for the second leg at the Goldstone Ground. They went in one up at half-time and concluded with a 2-1 margin to win the trophy by a 4-3 aggregate; Numar Hague went on as a second-half substitute and scored our reply. Our team tried hard to force extra-time, but eventually had to cede our title as holders of the Cup we won last season.

SOUTH EAST COUNTIES LEAGUE (Division 2)

West Ham United decided withdraw their Junior Division team from the South East Counties League at the end of the campaign. From next season, any younger members of our squad will be facing immediate competition against the under-18's in the Senior Division.
