West Ham's promising young striker Tony Cottee scored a brilliant hat trick against Rangers in the South East Counties Division One, under 18 match at Chadwell Heath before joining the England Youth squad.
Queens Park Rangers were champions of Div. 1 of the S.E. Counties League last season and the Hammers were runners - up. It was a wonderful boost for Cottee and his Hammers' team mate Alan Dickens who both joined the England Youth squad to play in an international tournament in Yugoslavia this week.
The Hammers' duo played a key role in blasting Rangers with four cracking goals in the first half. Cottee struck twice, while David Matthews and Alf Wright were also on target. Cottee completed the scoring in the second half, while Rangers replied with two penalties. Clive Bloomfield, son of former Orient manager Jimmy Bloomfield, lined up as a substitute for this Hammers' team.

Garwood, Spiers, Parris, Donald, Baker, Potts, Wright, Dickens, Cottee, Campbell, Skinner
The under-18 side hold a two-goal half - time advantage over Southend United at Chadwell Heath, and then swamped the opposition with another six without reply in the second half . A couple of the Shrimpers' defenders contributed to our total with "own goals"; of the remainder. Greg Campbell netted a hat-trick, Alan Dickens two. Alfie Wright one.

5 - 0 (Dickens 2, Campbell, Potts, Skinner)
18 September 1982
Garwood, Spiers (Warmington), Parris, Keen (Bloomfield), Wilson, Potts, Wright, Donald, Dickens, Campbell, Skinner
West Ham went one point clear at the top of the South East Counties League Division One with a sparkling 5-0 win at Brompton. Gillingham had beaten Fulham 8-2 in their previous match, but the visitors, passing immaculately, built a two-goal interval lead through Alan Dickens and Steve Potts. After the break Hammers sealed a fine display with further goals from Dickens, Andy Skinner and Greg Campbell.

Garwood, Spiers, Parris, Donald, Wilson, Potts, Matthews (Doyle), Dickens, Cottee, Campbell, Skinner (Warmington)
The under-18's continued their heavy rate of scoring with a 7-1 victory over Fulham in an away tie of the First Round of the League Senior Cup on Sept. 25. We had won 4-1 at the Richardson Evans Ground in a League game three weeks previously, bul found it even easier on this occasion. Tony Cottee, Warren Donald and George Parris each scored twice, and David Matthews completed the tally.

2 October 1982
Hunter, Warmington, Parris (McGregor), Parr, Wilson, Potts, Wright (Bloomfield), Skinner, West, Matthews, Goyette
Another quartet of goals went into the "for" column last Saturday to retain the 100 per cent record in league games. Portsmouth conceded only one before the interval at Chadwell Heath, but faded in the second half. Clive Bloomfield's goal was with his first kick of the match after going on as sub; our other scorers were David Matthews, George Parris and Mark West.
IPSWICH TOWN
Portman Road
1 - 2 ([og])
9 October 1982
Hunter, Warmington, Parris, Donald, Baker, Wilson, Wright, Dickens, Cottee, Campbell, Skinner
The visit to Portman Road ended in our first defeat of the season. We should have remained unbeaten, having been " gifted" an own goal early on. However, Ipswich equalised some ten minutes prior to the interval and then took the lead following a defensive error in the second half. After that it was a disappointing finale.

As holders of the trophy, we opened this season's defence of the title with a home tie v Coventry City. The Hammers were unimpressive in the goalless first half, and it was not exactly a surprise when the Midlanders went ahead five minutes after the resumption.
City held their advantage for seven minutes, until Tony Cottee shot hard and the ball deflected off a defender to level the count. The visitors impressed sufficiently to make a replay a possibility, but the Hammers scored three in five minutes (73, 75, 77 mins.) to settle the issue. Andy Skinner headed the first. Greg Campbell headed the next and Cottee made the tinal count 4-1 after a solo run.
We have been drawn at home to Luton Town in the Second Round. The date is Tuesday 16 November.
WATFORD
Garston
5 - 1 (Doyle 2, Matthews 2, West)
16 October 1982
Hunter, Warmington (McGregor), Seaden, Matthews, Baker, Sims, Doyle, Wilson, West, Goyette, Campbell
We had a young side on display for the visit to Garston, where we played Watford on Oct. 16. The Hammers p.iunded in four goals before the interval, and emerged 5 1 winners as each side scored once in the second half. Michael Doyle and David Matthews netted two apiece. Mark West being our other scorer.
