The opening match of the season produced a draw for our under-18 side. They were somewhat surprisingly held to 1-1 by Norwich City, who put UD a good performance at Chadwell Heath on Aug. 29. We included a couple of newcomers - Tony Dudley and Andy Skinner - who each played one half. Wayne Reader was our scorer from a penalty-kick
CHARLTON ATHLETIC
Eltham
2 - 2 (Charlton, Donald [pen])
5 September 1981
Vaughan, Wilson, Burns, Donald, Ampofo C., Ampofo G., Charlton, Dickens, Cottee, Campbell, Parris
All four goals at Eltham were scored in the first half. Charlton Athletic twice held the lead, but their counters were levelled by new apprentice Alfie Charlton and Warren Donald (who converted a penalty-kick). The second half remained interesting despite the lack of goals, but in general the defences had taken the measure of their opposition.

Hunter, Reader, Cowell (Burns M.), Donald, Ampofo G., McPherson, Charlton (Wright), Dickens, Cottee, Campbell, Parris
Our home fixture v Orient at Chadwell Heath produced five goals. The Hammers took a two-goal lead before the interval, but although Orient reduced the arrears we recovered the margin with a further goal. The O's were by no means out of the game, and netted again before the end to maintain interest until the final whistle. Our scorers were Alfie Charlton, Tony Cottee and George Parns.
CHELSEA

19 September 1981
Vaughan, Burns, Cowell (Tuck), Donald, Ampofo C., Ampofo G., Charlton (Wright), Reader, Campbell, Matthews, Parris
Chelsea won at Chadwell Heath by the only goal of the match, scored in the first half. It was a victory which they possibly did not deserve on the balance of the exchanges, but could be summed up by the fact that the West Londoners capitalised on that chance whilst we missed all ours.

26 September 1981
Vaughan, Burns, Cowell, Donald, Ampofo C., McPherson, Wright, Dickens, Cottee, Parris, Schiavi (Ampofo G.)
The under-18's fixture at Chadwell Heath was a First Round tie in the Division I Cup (of which we are the holders). Spurs provided the opposition, and equalised Tony Cot-tee's opening goal, but they were in arrears at half-time through a further counter by Keith McPherson. We then added to our score through Chris Ampofo and Mark Schiavi before the visitors netted again, but three more goals by Alan Dickens and George Parris (two) completed the 7-2 rout in our favour.

All three goals in the away match v Portsmouth were scored after the interval. Gregory Campbell, Alfie Wright and Paul Wilson netted in turn, and we ended comfortable winners. It was a physical game; Pompey had a player sent off and some booked, but the Hammers maintained a clean sheet in that respect.

Tony Cottee came on as substitute midway through the second half of our First Round tie against Luton Town at Upton Park and he scored the only goal of the match.
Both teams had earlier opportunities to gain a lead, but in the end the Hammers beat the Hatters.
We are now away to Oxford United or Derby County in the Second Round.

10 October 1981
Vaughan, Reader, Cowell, Warmington, Ampofo C., McPherson, Wright, Dickens, Campbell, Cottee, Parris
Crystal Palace fielded a very young side against us at Mitcham. It was no match for our XI which included nine apprentices, and the Hammers won easily by 6-0. Nevertheless, goals are goals, whatever the opposition, and it was a pleasant change to see chances being taken instead of missed. Three players each scored twice - Gregory Campbell, Tony Cottee and Alan Dickens.
QUEENS PARK RANGERS

2 - 1 (Campbell, Cottee)
17 October 1981
Hunter, Reader, Parris, Donald, Ampofo G., Cowell, Wright, Dickens, Campbell, Cottee, Schiavi
The match against Queens Park Rangers was due to be played on Rangers' ground, but was switched to Chadwell Heath. Gregory Campbell opened the score, but the opposition made it one apiece before the interval. Then we missed a penalty, but Tony Cottee scored the winner for us about a quarter-hour from the end.

Vaughan, Reader, Parris, Donald, Ampofo C., McPherson, Wright, Dickens, Campbell, Cottee, Schiavi
Our endeavours to repeat last season's success in reaching the Final of this competition have met with stern opposition so far in the current campaign.
A single goal against Luton Town saw us through the First Round in a home lie. and the Second Round visit to the Baseball Ground on Oct. 28 ended with Derby County forcing a 1-1 draw.
Alfie Wright netted our goal in the first half, but the young Rams fought back well and an equaliser after the interval brought them a deserved second chance to make progress. From our viewpoint it was a good ending to an average performance.

Vaughan, Reader, Parris, Donald, Ampofo C., McPherson, Wright, Dickens, Cottee, Campbell, Schiavi
We fielded a full side of apprentices against Southend United at Roots Hall, and received a first-half shock when the Shrimpers went a goal up. The Hammers recovered their equilibrium after the interval, and a goal each from Gregory Campbell, Tony Cottee, Warren Donald (a penalty), Alan Dickens and Mark Schiavi brought a 5-1 victory to keep our team at the top of the table.

Gillingham made us fight hard for two points at Chadwell Heath. They held out for a goalless first half, but George Parris got the decisive counter to leave us one ahead at full time. It should have been 2-0, but for a decision that mystified many of those present; we successfully converted a penalty, but the goal was disallowed as an opponent had encroached into the penalty area ; the kick was re-taken, but the 'keeper saved the second attempt.

A very convincing win last Saturday put us into-' the Semi-Final of the Division One Cup, of which we are the holders. The victims on this occasion were Fulham, who we defeated by 4-1 on their own ground at Roehampton. After taking the lead early on, we conceded a dubious penalty that enabled the Cottagers to draw level. However, the Hammers went in front again before half-time, and added a further couple in the second half to win 4-1. Our scorers were Tony Cottee (2), Alan Dickens and Alfie Wright

The score in our Second Round replay v Derby County at Upton Park was a surprise insofar that the Rams had held us to a 1-1 draw at the Baseball Ground. In fact, the issue was virtually settled by half-time and it was more-or-less a question of how many the Hammers would eventually total.
Our youngters settled for a six-nil margin, five being netted before the interval. After Warren Donald had opened the score with a great shot, Tony Cottee completed a hat-trick in 13 minutes; five minutes before half-time Gregory Campbell headed the fifth. Mark Schiavi hit the woodwork before making it six, County's nearest to scoring a consolation was when they hit the bar during the second half.

The match against Spurs at Cheshunt went our way up to half-time, as Tony Cottee's goal gave us an interval lead. However, the home side put on a lot of pressure in the second half, and eventually won by 3-1. Each team was at full-strength, as neither club had a Reserve Team fixture that day.

It was unfortunate that injuries and Reserve Team calls left us with a team below full strength for the match at Chadwell Heath against Ipswich Town. The Hammers fought well enough, but the Blues scored one each side of the interval to improve their position and topple us from the top of the table. A pleasing feature was that Robert Wall came on for the last half-hour to make his first appearance of the season, following a couple of leg operations; he came through the test in a satisfactory manner.

Shrewsbury Town put up a good fight against us in the Third Round (Quarter-Final) the match having been postponed for a week due to the pitch being unfit.
Tony Cottee opened our account, but the Shrews equalised with a near-post deflection following a corner-kick. However, Gregory Campbell made it 2-1 in our favour before the interval, and Cottee settled the issue after half-time with his second counter. At the finish, the margin in our favour might have been greater.
We are at home in the Semi-Final to either Southampton or Leicester City; their first meeting at The Dell ended in a goalless draw.

The under-18's have really been getting among the goals in recent engagements, and they netted another five last Saturday v Crystal Palace at Chadwell Heath. Only one was scored before half-time, and that came through a defender putting in an own goal following a corner. Palace also responded nobly, and scored twice to play their part in an interesting encounter, with the final count 5-2 in our favour.

The Southern Junior Floodlit Cup Semi-Final v Southampton at Upton Park was more-or-less decided by half-time. We repeated last Saturday's victory over Ipswich Town by defeating them 3-1 at Upton Park on Monday evening in the League Senior Cup.
We got away to a good start by scoring in the sixth minute ; Warren Donald fastened on a through ball and slammed it past the 'keeper. A decisive goal came on the stroke of half- time, Gregory Campbell converting a centre from Donald. Until then the visitors were always threatening to equalise, and when Campbell extended the margin three minutes after the interval it looked all over. However, the Town rallied to reduce their arrears on the hour, and from thence onwards put us under a lot of pressure without further scoring.

We had a 4-1 lead from the first leg of the tie played at The Den, but in the return at Upton Park last Wednesday it was Millwall who provided an early shock.
They scored an early goal to reduce the margin, but we quickly replied and Tony Cottee's couple gave us an interval lead of 2—1. Things went very much the Hammers' way during the second half except for one more goal by the Lions, as Gregory Campbell had a personal tally of four in the concluding 45 minutes.
