In the early 1970s, one of the national dailies - almost certainly either the Daily Express or the Daily Mail - issued a charming series of cut‑out footballer playing cards, slipped between the pages for readers to collect and trade. The run appears to have comprised a full deck of 52 paper cards, each featuring a leading player of the period, rendered in that unmistakable newsprint style of the time. Though the precise issuer remains unconfirmed, the set survives as a wonderfully evocative relic of the era, capturing the way newspapers once fed the nation’s appetite for football through simple, tactile giveaways.
