ESSO PETROLEUM Co
F.A. Cup Centenary 1872-1972

To mark the centenary of the F.A. Cup in 1972, Esso launched one of the most memorable football-themed petrol station promotions of the era. Motorists filling up at participating Esso forecourts were rewarded with sealed packets containing commemorative football medals, each celebrating a club that had lifted the famous trophy during the competition's first 100 years. The promotion formed part of Esso's wider "100 Years of Football" campaign and quickly became a collecting craze among supporters of all ages.
Collectors were encouraged to assemble a complete set and mount the medals in a specially produced display folder, which also contained historical information and photographs charting the story of the F.A. Cup from 1872 to 1972. The collection included medals representing former cup-winning clubs.
