The under-18's had to fight hard for their second win in the opening fortnight of the season. Although conceding a penalty which was converted by Billy Hall, Norwich City led 2-1 at the interval of the fixture at Chadwell Heath. But the Hammers rallied well, and goals from Billy Pegram and Wayne Reader put us on the right end of a 3-2 score-line at the finish.

Our under-18's put on a great performance at Upton Park on Sept. 10. eventually defeating F.A. Youth Cup holders Millwall in as decisive a manner as the 3-0 score suggested. The Young Lions were cheered on by strong support in an attendance of over 700, but they and their fans were frustrated by the manner in which their hopes were shattered.
Millwall had some near-misses in the first quarter-hour, but were worn down to concede a goal from a powerful shot by George Cowie only two minutes before half-time. Phil Brignull's tremendous header in the 78th minute put the game more-or-less on ice, but any remaining doubts were dispelled two minutes later as Paul Allen converted a penalty. The second half was a real pleasure, and although Millwall fought gallantly they were thoroughly demolished

Although our under-18's won the deferred replay of the 1978-79 Final on 10 September they lost their grip on the trophy only twelve days later. However, a difference in available team-strength had a lot to do with this, as several eligible players were playing in the Reserves on the same day.
The team against Ipswich Town at Chadwell Heath that morning played well, and were rather unfortunate to lose out by 1-2 against a more experienced side. A goal down at the interval, the Hammers went further in arrears before gaining a consolation counter from Billy Hall.

Manager Ron Boyce's comment on the home game against Gillingham was that the final count could have been in the region of 8-6 in our favour! As it happened, neither side succeeded in finding the net, so it was eventually a goalless draw. Whilst we missed a lot of chances, we had to thank goalkeeper John Vaughan for keeping the opposition scoreless.

We fielded an XI including ten professionals and apprentices against Orient at Upton Park on Oct. 16, in the First Round. This contingent proved too much for our near-rivals, and three first-half goals were sufficient to put us through.
Midway through the opening period Ray Houghton and Glen Burvill netted with powerful shots. O's hit hack, but with five minutes to go to the interval break, Mark Smith hit the third from a cross by Bobby Barnes. The Hammers maintained the initiative during the second half, but some missed opportunities and good goal-keeping by Lloyd Scott prevented them increasing the margin.
The result was a shock for Orient, whose line-up contained three youth internationals. They were very confident pre-match, but the manner of our victory left them quite deflated.

Despite the very bad weather conditions it was decided to carry through with the First Round replay v Dover at Upton Park on November 6. The very sparse attendance that also braved the elements saw the Hammers gain a very comfortable victory, although the visitors showed some clever touches and a lot of spirit in the early stages. Steve Milton and Terry Ward scored before the interval ; skipper Mark Smith, Steve Hibbert and Bobby Barnes made it 5-0 at the finish.

Our youngsters sole reward for dominating the first half of last Monday's second round lie v Swansea Youth was a Glen Burvill goal. After the interval three further goals were sufficient to give us a comfortable margin at the final whistle. Jason Wright converted a tree-kick via the underside of the crossbar : Steve Milton robbed a Welsh defender near the centre-circle and ran on to round the opposing 'keeper before slotting home our third ; excellent approach-work by Ray Houghton was finished of! by Bobby Barnes, who had previously caused a number of problems to the young Welshmen.

The score at the end of the match versus Chelsea in the Third Round at Upton Park was rather flattering, although we probably missed as many chances of scoring as did the visitors.
The West Londoners went into an interval lead when a badly-taken free-kick from our half of the field was directed to an opponent, who ran it back to net in very adequate fashion.
Ii was not until 20 minutes from time that Paul Allen levelled the count from the penalty-spot, and even then the odds appeared on a draw. However, with seven minutes left on the clock Mark Smith made a great opening for Bobby Barnes to put us ahead. Steve Milton made it 3-1 shortly afterwards following a solo run through the opposing defenders.

Lowly-placed Southend United were somewhat fortunate to keep our under-I8's down to a 5-2 margin at Rocheway. We met with a disappointing defeat in the Quarter-Final at Eastville, Bristol Rovers winning the Third Round tie by 3-1. However, the Rovers then dictated for the rest of the match, and two further counters ended our hopes of further progress.

A goal by Tony La Ronde put our under-18's away to a good start in the Third Round tie at Kenilworth Road last Monday, but Luton Town showed a lot more determination towards the task in hand. The Hatters fought back to be 2-1 ahead at half-time, and their continual persistence was further rewarded by another counter in the final minute. Overall, it was a disappointing performance on the Hammers' part.
