Our Colts did much better in their match v Reading Colts on Aug. 22 than in their Division Two game a week earlier. Although leading only by a single goal at half-time, they turner! on the pressure in the second half, and the visitors succumbed by 4-1. Ade Coker added his second counter after the interval, amateurs Ian Faulkner and Geoff Richardson being our other scorers.

Neither of our youth sides have got away to a very good start, but it is " early days " yet and we are hoping for an improvement when the line-ups settle down. The seniors (under-18) had a disappointing reverse last Saturday, losing by two clear goals to Millwall in a Div. I match. They have two points from their three games to date.

Our under-18's were easily defeated by Watford Colts in the First Round of the Division I Cup last Saturday. The home side went ahead in the first half and added two more after the interval.
The Juniors put on a good performance in the Div. 11 Cup group against Chelsea at Chadwcll Heath. We played some good soccer in the first half, and went ahead through Terry Warren after 24 mins. Chelsea made it 1-1 13 minutes later, and although the second - half standard declined somewhat, we fought hack for David Hayes to score the winner ten minutes from time.

Our under-18's had a high-scoring name against Brentford Colts at Chadwell Heath on Oct. 3, ending as eventual winners by 5 3 after sharing six lirst-half goals. Three of our goals came from the "half-back line," Chris Kinnear netting twice and Tony Marchant once. The only othier apprentice in the side Jimmy Brown got one of the others, David Hayes being the remaining scorer. This was actually the Bees' "home" fixture, but played on our ground,
Despite driving rain before the match and an almost continual heavy shower during the game, the Preliminary Round tie here on Oct. 5 provided 120 minutes of exciting football between the Orient foils and our under-18'$.
The conditions naturally had their effect, but both sets of youngsters battled bravely to share eight goals. The first half gave little indication of the goal-rush to come, for the 45 minutes score was one-nil in our favour as a result of an individual burst and 30 yards drive from Kevin Lock.
However, within four minutes of the restart it was two-each -Orient equalised, Harry Barnes got one from 20 yards and Orient levelled it again. Barnes converted a 25-yards free kick with 16 minutes to go, but eight minutes from full-time it became 3-3.
There was some confusion among the match-officials about the extra-lime ruling, and many of the 1,256 fans who braved the elements left the ground; but those who remained saw a hard O's side again level the scores for the fourth time after Ade Coker put us 4-3 ahead - all in all a fair result.

After 35 minutes of almost constant defence, Charlton Athletic Colts broke away to score twice in two minutes in the First Round tie of the Southern Junior Floodlit Cup at Upton Park last Monday. Their joy was short-lived, inasmuch that five minutes later they were again on level terms; Kevin Lock hit a left-foot volley to reduce the margin and then a 25-yarder from Barry Barnes was deflected to make it 2-2 at half-time.
Six minutes after the resumption Paul Gregory lobbed in a pass from Alan Taylor, and in the 62nd minute an "own goal" gave the score-line a look more representative of the exchanges. After that the Hammers cruised home to ;i comfortable 4-2 win.
It was a fine recovery, in which Barnes particularly emerged with credit for a non-stop all-round performance before a 1,200-odd attendance.

A headed goal by Joe Durrell from an eighth-minute corner taken by Barry Barnes put us ahead against Aston Villa in the Quarter-Final of the Southern Junior Floodlit Cup at Upton Park last Monday. The 1,201 attendance saw the Hammers continue to pressurise the Midlanders' defence, which by virtue of hard tackling and some good saves kept us at bay until a quarter-of-an-hour into the second half. Then John Watson " did a solo'' to make it 2-0 and take our under-18's into the last four.
It was a good performance under very heavy conditions, in which Barry Barnes did a "dynamo performance" to earn especial praise.

Unfortunately it came to an end, when an all-amateur line-up met top-of-the-table Spurs who fielded a full strength youth XI. Nevertheless, the Hammers acquitted themselves most excellently, for after netting an equaliser early in the second half it took a mystifying penalty-decision to provide the visitors with the means of notching both points ; even then there was a touch of irony, for the spot-kick rebounded from a post before Spurs mailc it at the second attempt.

Our previously-postponed First Round tie v Charlton Athletic Colts took place at somewhat short notice at Upton Park on the Monday before Christmas. Consequently the attendance was lower than is usual for our under-18's games, but those who did get here saw an interesting duel.

The Hammers gradually gained ascendancy to take the lead after 20 minutes, but the Young Lions fought back to pose several threats on our goal. However, we survived this pressure, and went two up 18 minutes after the interval. Millwall were forced to throw everything into attack, and seven minutes later the issue was virtually settled with another goal when the home 'keeper committed his only real error of the game. We made it 4-0 with four minutes to go, to underline a convincing win.

The under-18's put on a really fine-show to defeat Fulham Colts at Craven Cottage in a Fourth Round tie on Jan. 18. Constant ram made the pitch very heavy in mid-field, and the Cottagers had a definite age-and-weight advantage.
With the wind at their hacks in the first half Fulham had rather more chances, although we did have a number of opportunities to score in conditions that favoured attackers rather than defenders. Consequently when we went ahead through Ade Coker five minutes after the interval it appeared likely we could win comfortably, but the homesters pegged us back within two minutes. Then with 17 minutes to go on the clock, Joe Durreil took advantage of the dry ground on the wings, and although his angled shot was parried by the 'keener, the ball ran out to John Ayris for our No. 7 to make it 2-1. There was still plenty to come, and Fulham even increased their pressure. Indeed the "agony" was prolonged by the fact that the second half actually lasted for 52 minutes by the watch- and in the overtime it took three good saves to make sure of a place in the Quarter-Finals.

Our Youth XI's second meeting with Wolves Colts proved just as hard a game as the first one, when they met in a Fifth Round (Quarter-Final) replay at Molineux on Feb. 23. Indeed, it ended with three players being " booked" by League referee Mr. Harry New, before a 4,500 attendance.
We opened the score in the second minute from the penalty-spot, Barry Barnes making the conversion after Adc Coker had been pushed off the ball when set to put us ahead. Wolves made it one-each with 16 mins. to go, and then went ahead two minutes after the start of the second half of extra time. They seemed destined to hold this margin, but in the 118th minute John Watson converted a free-kick taken by his full-back partner Ray Fulton — and the teams were again tied at two apiece.

We lost the toss for choice of venue for the second replay, so travelled to the Midlands again for the right to meet Arsenal in the Semi-Final.

We had an excellent win in the Semi-Final of the Senior Section of the London Youth Cup v Orient at Leyton Stadium. The O's had forced a 1-1 draw here earlier in the month in the first meeting, but on this occasion there was no doubling our superiority.

Our second was an individual effort by Ade Coker, who beat his opponent, took the ball along the bye-line, tricked the 'keeper and then found the vacant net We comfortably held the 2-0 interval lead during the second half, and now meet Tottenham Hotspur in the Final, the date and venue not yet being decided.
