Two successive home wins heralded the new season but five defeats and two draws in the next seven games left West Ham near the bottom of the table. The League Cup tie at home to Halifax Town saw the Yorkshire team beaten 4–2, only for the Hammers to bow out in the next round, losing 1–0 at Nottingham Forest. Clyde Best, the 18-year-old from Bermuda, scored twice against Burnley and again two days later against Stoke City. Results away from home were poor, with no wins in the first 11 away games, but to the delight of supporters the first away win came in the 2–0 victory at London rivals Tottenham in December.
A trip to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup brought another away defeat (2–1). Peter Eustace was signed from Sheffield Wednesday and made his debut against them in a 3–2 victory at Hillsborough. The Hammers struggled throughout February, dropping to seventeenth. A goalscorer was needed and one arrived when a swap deal was arranged with Tottenham in March, as Martin Peters joined Spurs and legendary Jimmy Greaves came to Upton Park.
Greaves made his debut at Manchester City and scored twice in the Hammers 5–1 victory. The acquisition of Greaves sparked a late revival, with just one defeat in the remaining five games helping the team to seventeenth place.
