There were no additions to the playing squad but Peter Brabrook left for Orient and Jack Burkett was transferred to Charlton Athletic. An excellent beginning to the campaign saw only one defeat in the opening 12 games. Martin Peters had scored nine goals in these games, including a hat-trick in the 5–0 home win against Burnley. Another hat-trick was recorded to Geoff Hurst as the Hammers crushed Bolton Wanderers 7–2 at home in the League Cup. In the following round West Ham struggled as after a goalless draw Coventry City won the replay 3–2. October brought West Ham’s biggest win for years as Sunderland were thrashed 8–0 at the Boleyn Ground, where in-form Geoff Hurst scored six goals. The home London derby with Queens Park Rangers saw Harry Redknapp volley the winning goal in a thrilling 4–3 victory.

The new East Stand was opened for the visit of Bristol City in the FA Cup, and Peters scored twice in the 3–2 victory. After a 2–0 win at Huddersfield in the next round the Hammers travelled to Third Division Mansfield Town. In a horror showing West Ham were dumped out of the Cup after losing 3–0. The league form was better as the team moved into sixth place after beating Coventry City 5–2 at home and being unbeaten for seven games. In a disappointing end to the season, however, there were no victories in the last nine games, with only four goals being scored, and a final placing of eighth.
