We opened our London Mid-Week League programme for 1958-59 with a fixture v. “Watford” at the Spotted Dog Ground, fielding a strong-looking XI. Both sides failed to find the net in the first half, but after the interval better cohesion on the Hammers’ part resulted in us gaining a 3-0 victory, the goals being scored by Bill Nicholson (2) and Doug Wragg

We led 2-1 at half-time but finally surrendered the points by 3-4, due mainly to defensive errors which deprived us of a general superiority. Brian Hart (2) and Geoff Hurst (from a penalty) were our scorers.

Our newest professional - David Hills - made his pro debut in this game. Another good game and another 1-0 win for the Hammers, with Geoff Hurst scoring with about a quarter-of-an-hour to go to full-time.

Our XI included several youngsters who have played for local schoolboy sides, and they showed up well against older opposition in losing by 4-3.
