With no Metropolitan League fixture our "A" team opposed Arsenal "A" in the Mid-WeeK League at the Spotted Dog Ground. The Gunners ended as winners by 2-1 in a game where the Hammers did very well against a strong side, and we could consider ourselves as a little unfortunate to be defeated. Brown was our scorer.

As the Palace had a Colts' fixture in the evening their younger players did not not take part in this game, and the South Londoners therefore fielded a mainly Reserve team. Consequently they proved rather too strong for us, and ran out comfortable winners by 3-1. Our goal was scored by Blackburn, who moved to centre-forward after half-time.

Monday afternoon's Mid-Week League fixture unfortunately brought a much different story, for a Chariton Athletic "A" Team that contained players with First Division experience proved far too strong for our young XI. The Athletic ran riot to the tune of six goals to one (scored by Fenn) and were comfortable winners.

A goal by Moore sufficed to bring us our first win in this season's competition, the 1-0 margin thus avenging an earlier 6-1 defeat at the hands of the South Londoners.

The only newcomer in a young XI was Avedikian, a centre-forward on trial from Cambridge United. After five minutes play Mick Brooks put us in front, but Watford levelled the scores before the interval. However, the nine professionals in the visitors' XI turned the scales in the second half, and although Lyall netted a penalty to make it 2-2 the Blues scored the winner with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

Nearly all these were under the age of 18, and as Watford fielded nine professionals the advantage of experience weighed heavily in favour of the Hertfordshire club. Nevertheless our team did very well, and although losing 0-2 were unfortunate not to score in an interesting game.

A strong visiting side generally held the upper hand throughout, and fully merited their 2-0 victory.

It was an evenly-contested match, the only goal being scored by Fred Cooper from a second half penalty-kick.

Mick Newman's goal gave us a half-time lead, but the Palace equalised in the second half to share the points in an even game. We sustained two casualties, Keith Brown having to go off a quarter-of-an-hour from the end and Stan Earl receiving a slight concussion in the last minute.

The game was not a very interesting one, and although the Blues eventually gained a 1-0 victory this could have been reversed had our forwards shown stronger finishing.

Earl, Cripps, Cantwell, Bovington, Kirkup, Lyall, Woodley, Brooks, Brown K., Cartwright, Keeble R.
We took the opportunity to give Noel Cantwell a " try out " following his return to training after a recent injury. Unfortunately Noel did not come through his test in an entirely satisfactory manner. Little can be said about the game in general, for conditions were very bad with snow and sleet throughout, but we were satisfied with the play of our XI who had the better of the exchanges despite being held to a goalless draw.

An entertaining game on a hard ground found our youngsters playing some good soccer, Geoff Hurst having a particularly good game and Mike Beesley doing well in his "A" Team debut. The first half was goalless, but although Harry Cripps converted a penalty to put us in front after the interval, Portsmouth equalised about 20 minutes Irom time to force a 1-1 draw
