Although the Second Practice Match did not produce as many goals as the first there was still plenty of interest, The Club Colours (consisting of the possible First XI) defeated the Blues by 4-1, scorers being Hawkins, O'Farrell, Woodgate and Gaxzard for the Colours, and Gregory J. for the Blues.
Unfortunately two ankle injuries were sustained. Harry Hooper had to leave the field after half-an-hour but George Wright's mishap did not prevent him from playing out time.

Our 'B " Team had a friendly fixture against Dagenham British Legion, of the London League, winning by 7-0. Scorers were Pat Saunders (a former East Ham Grammar School centre-forward) with four to his credit, outside-left Bill Stanley (2) and inside-left Ken Salt.
This was a most encouraging start and we have high hopes of the fourth-string in their Metropolitan League campaign.

DEAL TOWN : Colts

Line-up Unknown

On Boxing Day it was decided to stage the Colts match at Welling. West Ham were unable to get their full team to the ground and played several over-age players (it was only a friendly) and two 'borrowed' Town Colts 0 Brian Mason and Albert Dadd - who played a stroming game. Mason made two of the West Ham goals in their 5-2 win. Town scorers being Johnny Palmer and John Sewll (penalty).

The friendly against Blackburn Rovers proved disappointing on several fronts. The weather did its best to dampen the occasion, and succeeded: a thin, wind‑buffeted crowd of barely 5,500 gave the ground an oddly hollow feel, far removed from the usual hum that accompanies First Team football.
The match itself rarely rose above the conditions. Both sides produced patches of tidy approach play, yet the final ball was too often squandered, and a string of golden chances went begging at either end. For long spells it felt like a contest waiting for someone - anyone - to seize it by the scruff of the neck.
There was at least some consolation in the quality of the goals that did arrive. Tommy Briggs broke the deadlock on the half‑hour, showing a flash of his class as he gathered a through‑ball, steadied himself, and drove a clean shot beyond the keeper. Just after the interval, Jimmy Andrews levelled matters with a fierce 20‑yard effort that somehow cut through the wind and found the far corner.
But the moment that lingered came three minutes from time. The ball sat up invitingly for Bobby Crossan, the smallest figure on the pitch, and he unleashed a drive of such astonishing power that even with the wind at its back it drew a collective gasp. Ernie Gregory could do nothing but watch it tear past him - a goal struck with conviction, direction, and a touch of disbelief.

West Ham United and Portsmouth players played a small part in raising funds for the relief effort.

We visited Antwerp to meet Portsmouth in a match in aid of the Belgian. Dutch and British Flood Relief Funds, and we were very pleased to add our contribution to the splendid effort which has been so spontaneously forthcoming.
The occasion provided several of our chaps with their first experience of air travel, and about eight with their first journey abroad. Our party consisted of the team, together with Johnny Gregory, Tommy Moroney and George Taylor as travelling reserves, plus Trainer Billy Moore and Ted Fenton and Eddie Chapman as officials.
They left on Friday morning, lunched on the plane and arrived at Antwerp about 5 p.m. (Continental time); after settling in at the hotel most of the party spent the evening at the cinema. Saturday was spent in visiting the Mayor at the Town Hall where each club presented him with a souvenir plaque) and the match was played in the afternoon. The teams returned home by plane on Sunday, the Hammers arriving back at Upton Park about 2 p.m.
A bus strike unfortunately kept away many potential spectators, but there was nevertheless a 10,000 attendance; among these were many troops, and we were greeted by several shouts of "Up the Hammers" from Londoners
The game was very even throughout, and although both sides were all out to win this did not prevent them from playing some entertaining soccer. Pompey went ahead in the first half when Henderson netted with an overhead kick from close in, and they added to their lead after the interval when Reid followed up a long punt by Stephen to score from 10 yards. However, the Hammers reduced the margin mid-way through the second-half with the best goal of the match. Gerry Gazzard cutting in to score from 20 yards with a grand shot. Unfortunately an injury to Malcolm Allison shortly afterwards brought necessary rearrangements to our line-up, and we could not record an equaliser, Pompey gaining the day by 2-1.

With no Eastern Counties League fixture on Saturday, West Ham sent a mixed side to Harlow for a friendly against the local Spartan League outfit. Young Mickey Lill, drafted up from the Juniors, and D. Gold, a schoolboy already decorated with under‑16 representative honours, added a welcome touch of promise to the line‑up.

From the outset the Hammers controlled the play. They moved the ball with far greater assurance than their hosts, dictated the tempo, and spent long spells camped in Harlow territory. Yet for all their superiority, the breakthrough stubbornly refused to come. Chances were carved out, half‑chances multiplied, but the finishing touch kept slipping away.

It took until midway through the second half for the pressure to finally tell. George Petchey, industrious throughout, seized his moment and put West Ham ahead with a neat finish that settled the nerves and restored a sense of order to the afternoon.

Petchey was involved again for the clincher. Spotting Peter Burdon’s run, he threaded a well‑weighted pass into space. Burdon didn’t hesitate - he met it first time, striking a crisp, rising shot that flew past the keeper and sealed a deserved two‑goal victory.

With no league commitments to fulfil, West Ham dispatched a mixed side to Letchworth for a friendly against the Hertfordshire club, who are themselves seeking admission to the Eastern Counties League next season. The Hammers’ line‑up blended amateurs from the “B” Team with a handful of professionals — a useful test for both groups and a chance to stretch legs in competitive conditions.

The visitors settled quickest. Their passing was sharper, their movement more cohesive, and for long spells they dictated the rhythm of the match. Yet Letchworth, eager to impress with their application for higher status in mind, refused to fold and made West Ham work for every opening.

The breakthrough eventually came through Johnston, who finished neatly to give the Hammers the lead their play deserved. Letchworth hit back to level matters, but the decisive moment arrived courtesy of Arnott, a centre‑forward from the Beckenham area making a strong impression in claret and blue. He took his chance with confidence, striking the winner and underlining his promise against determined opposition.
