During the match, Woodgate hit the wall surrounding the pitch after being tumbled over by Tunney the Luton full-back. Wodgate was unconcious for ten minutes. Dodds missed many excellent opportunities to score - once after a long run and with only the 'goalie' to beat. Bell played his first war-time game for Hammers.

Two errors by West Ham 'goalie' Medhurst helped Brighton to a 4-1 lead after 60 minutes. Hammers recovered and took the lead with 4 goals in 15 minutes. Brighton then missed a penalty as Reid hit a spot-kick direct at Harry Medhurst.

West Ham qualified to meet Chelsea in the League South Cup semi-final at Tottenham with a clear-cut victory over Queeens Park Rangers after a hard game, which though marred by a lot of hard kicking proved enjoyable to a 20,000 crowd. Rangers never recovered from an early goal scored by Len Goulden in the sixth minute. After that they fought an uphill battle, gallantly, but rather hopelessly. Although the Rangers defenders, especially Brown, Ridyard and Jefferson, put up a brave show for an hour the side was ill-balanced.

The forwards, slow to get to the ball, could never escape the strangling grip of the West Ham half-backs, Corbett, Fenton and Wilson. Fenton's complete dominance of Heathcote took all the sting out of the attack, Rangers had no inside forward capable of drawing the defenders out of position away from the centre-forward. In contrast, Goulden and Dunn the West Ham inside forwards kept the Rangers on the run with skilful dribbling and well-timed passes. It was not surprising that in the second half, with Fitzgerald out f the game with an injured leg, Rangers were completely outplayed. Goulden was the star of the day scoring two goals and making a third for Small. Whitchurch scored the last two in the closing minutes.

Millwall, finalists in the League South Cup, visited Upton Park for a League game. It was typical of war-time soccer that they included four guest players - Quintnn (Birmingham), Ludford (Tottenham Hotspur), Spence (Chelsea) and Williams (Aberdeen). Millwall's penalty luck continued in east London. For the third time in two matches, Millwall had conceded (for hands) a penalty, and again the spot kick was missed. West Ham's left-half Lewis took it and fired straight at Bumstead the Lions goalkeeper. Millwall fielding only half their Wemblet side, played some copy-book football in the early stages and held their own against fast-moving Hammers' team. Later, disheartened by two opportunist goals by Ron Wilson, a wing half substituting for Len Goulden they faded out quickly. West Ham would have scored a glut of goals with a bustling centre forward. Small was not fast enough to make use of the speedy ball play of wingers Whitchurch and Woodgate.
Smith at centre-half for the visitors had an easy task with Small, but his opposite number Fenton holding Jinks, was unable to show a defensive command which must soon book him for Army and England honours. As usual, he was well supported by the old firm of Medhurst, Bicknell and Corbett whose throw in were equivalent of corner kicks. Woodgate scored the other Hammers' goal. Millwall's only goal - the best of the match - came from wee Tom Stevenson, a tricky inside left from Heart of Midlothian. He took the ball in midfield, weaved past three men, sisestepped another, bodyswerved into the peanlty area and completed a great solo run with a lovely low, cross-shot into the far corner. West Ham came back into their early form, if they maintain it they still have a chance to overhaul the Spurs and become League Champions.

Luton scored first through Woolhead in the opening 5 minutes. They might have gone further ahead had not Taylor stopped a cracking shot from Thomas. In the space of a couple of minutes Whitchurch levelled the scores then put Hammers in front. The first was the result of a bad error by Blair. As the home team got on top Cheetham missed by shooting high and Goulden by striking a post. Woolhead missed an easy chance to equalise before Cheetham made it 3-1 at half-time.
Immediatly following the restart Hall made it 4-1. The visiting defence then seemed to collapse as the homesters piled on 3 goals in quick succession through Whitchurch, Corbett abd Hall. The visiting forwards kept on trying, Taylor again had to save from Thomas and shortly after from Daniel. Hall added another goal, West Ham's 8th but Luton attacked again and Thomas scraped the home crossbar as he lobbed over Taylor. Cheetham scored the Londoners 9th but Luton attacked yet again and Daniel missed a glorious chance.
