West Ham had the points of this league match at Upton Park, safely in their keeping less than five minutes from the end, for they were then leading by three goals to one. It seemed all over bar the shouting, but in a period or two minutes, Tottenham pulled a couple of goals "out of the bag," and the Hammers had victory snatched rudely from them. While giving Tottenham every credit for their belated effort, a division of the spoils was more than they deserved, for up to that time they had displayed little ability in front of goal, and West Ham had been their masters in attack.
Chisholm was the strong man In Tottenham's defence, and Foreman, Hammers' centre-forward, got few chances. He had two in the first 20 minutes, and was fifty per cent, successful. The first he missed hopelessly, but the second, developing from a Goulden dribble and a Hobbis centre, he turned to account with a neat shot. Later in the first half. Tottenham appeared, likely to draw level, as the result of concerted attacks, in which O'Donnell and Beasley were prominent, but their efforts Invariably broke down in face of West Ham's strong defensive play.
They equalised about ten minutes after the beginning of the second half, and It was Beasley and O'Donnell who were concerned in the score. The former did the approach work, and his pass found O'Donnell favourably placed for a shot. which he netted just inside the post. A nice, goal, but the next, which fell to West Ham a few minutes later, was the best of the match. It resulted from another Goulden-Hobbis movement, which seemed likely to be unproductive until Hobbis got across a superb centre under difficulties almost, from the corner flag. The ball fell at Dunn's feet, and the goal he tapped home was a gift.
A little more than half an hour of the second half had gone when Ward, a usually safe kicker, missed his kick and left Hobbis a clear path to goal. He ran in and, as Hooper left his goal to meet him, he rammed home an unstoppable shot. West Ham seemed all set for victory, and, with less than five minutes to go, they still held their lead, but in two minutes the advantage was snatched from them. A lapse by the hitherto strong West Ham defence let in Rowley, who scored with a shot which went in off a post, and then O'Donnell, unmarked In front of goal, secured a centre from the left and put the ball past Gregory – an exciting finish.

There was little to choose between the sides in individual football ability. Campbell playing his first game for the Orient this season was there best forward, and Brophy, was injured in the first ten minutes and limped for the rest of the game. A bout of good play by Orient ought to have yielded goals, but both Smith and Hewitt missed badly, Campbell cleverly outwitted Lewis, but Cardwell headed away, and then the winger was just offside when he sent into the net. Hobbis got the better of Brophy and went down the wing and centred for Foreman to easily beat Rickett.
McLuckie twice cleverly broke up dangerous moves by the Hammers. A bad mistake by Bartlett let in Foreman who had no difficulty in making the score 2-0 just before half-time. On resuming, three abortive corners quickly fell to the Hammers, who eventually gave way to the Orient and we saw the back-markers give of their best, ending with Medhurst saving from McLuckie and Hewitt and Smith sending over. Goulden on two occasions cleverly manoeuvre to give his colleagues shooting chances, but the home defence held. Towards the end the Orient should have been drawing level. A sprint by Hobbis and a grand pass out to Foxall on the other wing enabled the latter to beat Rickett with a great drive 3-0. After Foxall had missed, Goulden sent in a high shot which Rickett just failed to hold, and the Hammers ran out winners by 4-0.

With this 3-0 defeat against our south-of-the-river rivals Millwall the Hammers headed to the top of the Football League South table. Ted Fenton was our skipper in the absence of regular captain Charlie Bicknell we also fielded two guest players in the line-up; Dai Jones of Leicester City at full-back and Willie Corbett of Celtic at centre-half. Foreman, Goulden and Wood were our scorers.

Postponed : Severe Cold

Our home match in the Football League South v Clapton Orient was postponed. War-time restrictions on the publication of weather news and other incidents caused a blank to be drawn over the reasons for this; and such press reports and programmes that are available in our files reveal no news apart from the fact that only three out of nine games in the schedule that day actually took place.

The Charlton Athletic v Reading fixture was also abandoned, but the stoppage of leave for Services players on the previous Saturday gave the clue that a combination of bad weather and Service calls in connection the Germans' Ardennes offensive were responsible for the disruption of fixtures.
