The arrival and departure of players, many of whom served in the Armed Forces, meant managers had to chop and change their starting Xls on a weekly basis. In addition, clubs benefited from the presence of 'Guest' players, who turned out for the local side while stationed in the locality.

One such player was an right full-back R. Savage, who played nine matches for West Ham United during the Second World War. The first of those came against Southend United on 26 October 1940, when the Hammers thrashed the Shrimpers 11-0 in front of 5,000 fans. Alec George Foreman scored four goals, while Joseph Stanley Foxall netted a hat-trick.

Chelsea were minus Barber at left-back, and Chalkley of West Ham, obliged. The Stamford Bridge club secured the lead in the second minute and started the second half with a 2-1 lead.

West Ham, in exhilarating form in the second half, put through five goals.
Arsenal were leading the South Section since the start of the season, and were routed 5-0 at Charlton. They drop to third place in the table, while West Ham who beat Chelsea 6-2, go to the top.

Bill Voisey the 50-year old Millwall trainer made up the home sides numbers for this tie. Voisey was a former England International having appeared for his country against Wales back in 1920. Hammers played a man short until half-time when ed Fenton arrived.
The score was 1-1 at this stage, Foreman having put the bisitors ahead in the 16th minute when he intercepted a poor back pass by Forsyth. The scires were levelled when Jinks nodded in a cross from Richardson. Len Goulden got the winner in the 73rd minute when his strong shot found the Millwall goalkeeper unsighted. Macauley had a fine match while Small, Barrett and Fenton made up a competent half-back line.

Little went right for West Ham in their London War Cup competition game with Reading at Upton Park which ended in a draw. Ten minutes after the start Foxall sustained an injury to his leg and, although he returned for some time in the first half, he was unable to render much assistance to his colleagues and did not accompany them following the interval. Then, when immediately after the visitors had taken the lead, the Hammers failed to convert a penalty. In the last few minutes, however, they managed to equalize, and subsequently seemed capable of scoring other goals, although one man short. Unfortunately their revival came too late for them to derive benefit from it.
A strong, fast and virile side, Reading had not lost a match in the competition and they refused to allow their opponents to settle to their normal game. The Hammers' inability to do that during the greater part of the exchanges was emphasized by the long absence of Foxall, which naturally affected their balance. Had they won. as they were expected to do, they would have replaced Beading as the competition leaders, but even with this inducement they failed to reproduce their best form and narrowly averted defeat.
Small went up into the attack in Foxall's place at outside-right, and he was the best of the forwards during that time. Generally, even when Foxall was hobbling about almost helpless, Hobbis on the other wing was very much neglected. That this policy was mistaken was proved by the fact that on one of the few occasions that he received a pass—and then It was in the nature of an accident—he levelled the scores.

Although slightly superior, Arsenal were flattered by their 3-0 win over West Ham United in the London War Cup on Spurs' ground. Except for twelve minutes midway through the second half there ws little difference between the teams, and midfield play was the order. The Arsenal's first goal was the outcome of Gregory rushing out of goal and colliding with Barrett when Beasley centred, and Drake was enabled to score simply. Three minutes later Beasley centred again, Drake sent the ball to the under-part of the bar and Kirchen made sure of a goal by heading in. It is officially announced that Drake was the scorer. West Ham protested that Beasley was offside and for two minutes play was held up by their vain appeals to Referee Henderson to consult the linesman who had flagged. Arsenal's third goal was from a penalty by Compton for a spectacular foul by Corbett on Bastin.
