A Pictorial History
1941-42 London League
Manager : Charlie Paynter
As a prelude to the opening of the 1941-42 season, 16 clubs in the South Regional League refused to accept their fixtures as issued by the Football League. Instead the 16 would carry on with the fixtures they arranged for their newly formed London War League. Mr. W.J. Cearns, chairman of the West Ham United and southern member of the Management Committee of the Football League, has disclosed that the League scheme entailed an average travel for each London club of 484 miles. Under the London scheme each club has to travel an average of 427 miles.

Manager Charlie Paynter has encountered much difficulty in recruiting a side to play Portsmouth in the new season opening match. He has covered countless miles going to see commanding officers of his various players in an effort to get leave. He anticipated that things would get worse especially as he has now lost the use of his car and is now doing many journeys by bus and on foot.
Charlie Bicknell would not be available for the first match as he was still recovering from a minor operation on his nose.
