FOOTBALL PROGRAMMES &
Collectables through the Decade
A Pictorial History
1937-38 London Combination
Please Note:
The 1937/38 London Combination season, is one of a few campaigns in this decade where there is little information readily available regarding confirmed line-ups. The German V1 Rocket that fell on the Boleyn Ground in the Second World War destroyed all the club's paper records up to that point in time.
Numerous trips to the Newspaper Archives at the British Library have so far failed to add to the mystic for this season. Line-ups shown in RED are unconfirmed and taken from the printed match programme.

There was no doubt that West Ham were the better all-round side, and it was due to their greater superiority in attack that they won so well. The forwards passed and re-passed so speedily that the defenders made many mistakes, but to the credit of the Orient, they never gave up trying, although they lacked the same efficiency in attack, and the West Ham defence rarely looked like being beaten. West Ham opened strongly, and there were soon shots from Bell and Fenton, but these lacked direction. Rumbold was early conspicuous in the Orient defence, and Iceton brought off several fine saves. Orient kept West Ham at bay for nearly half an hour, but then their goal succumbed twice in three minutes, and there was no doubt as to the result. Walker put Fenton through to score the first with a fast, low drive, and three minutes later Kirkaldie secured and, closing in, gave Iceton no chance with his final effort. The nearest the Orient had gone to scoring up to this stage was when Barrett was obliged to pass back to Conway, who missed the ball, which struck an upright. Towards the interval the Orient had more of the play, and Conway had to save from Rossiter and Lane.
There was no further score before the interval, and afterwards the Orient started with a great dash, forcing three corners in quick succession, but they lacked finish, and these were all cleared. After 17 minutes a miskick by Rumbold led to West Ham scoring their third goal. He allowed Dell to go through unchallenged and pass to Ruffell, who returned the ball in a flash for Fenton to complete a great move. Still the Orient never gave up trying, but their fate was sealed when Kirkaldie was brought down in the penalty area, and Barrett put on the fourth goal from the spot kick. A few minutes later Fenton completed the scoring with the best goal of the match, a screw shot from long range which curled well out of Iceton's reach. West Ham's team work and better attack were the deciding factors.

Abandoned: Fog 70mins
The tie between West Ham United and Walthamstow Avenue at Upton Park was abandoned owing to fog after seventy minutes when the professionals were leading by one goal to nothing, Corbett scoring First-time tackling and speedy recovering by the Walthamstow halves and backs caused the West Han forwards to part with the ball hurriedly and only Dell at inside right showed ability to create openings. Inspired by the fine work of Lewis at right half, the Avenue made several neat raids, but the only real danger came from Vincent and Magner the inside forwards.

ORDERED OFF BECAUSE OF RAIN !
Although football matches have been stopped by fog, hailstorms and snow, it seldom happens that the referee calls the players off the field because of rain.
After a fierce rainstorm, which drove the players to shelter for a few minutes, the quality of the play in the London Challenge Cup tie declined on the sodden ground. It was, however, always a well contested match. West Ham won deservedly, but Avenue fought pluckily. Vincent, inside left, and G. Forreman, who came in at centre forward, were splendid In attack. Lewis was as good as any other half-back on the field, while the backs tackled keenly and gave excellent support to Pinner, in goal. Ruffell and Fenton combined well on the West Ham left, and Simpson was a thrustful centre. The defence all round was sound until after the deluge. Simpson and Kirkaldie put West Ham two up before the interval. Simpson scored again thirteen minutes after the change over, and Magner got the Avenue goal on the stroke time.

Archibald Macaulay, the high-priced Scot secured from Glasgow Rangers, solve West Ham's centre-forward problem? Well, they can certainly hope so after his performance yesterday. He played at centre-forward in the reserve eleven for a London Combination match against Queen's Park Rangers at Upton Park, and got six of his side's seven goals!
