Wilkinson
West Ham scored through Wilkinson after 15 minutes the City put on much pressure the defence proved very capable and Medhurst, the former Woking goalkeeper gave a magnificent display. Medhurst seemed to have an uncanny sense of the direction from which the ball would come, and some of stops would have done credit to a goalkeeper of first-class rank. West Ham held their lead until midway through a rousing second half when Brown beat Medhurst, and a little later Foulkes sent up long pass, which enabled McPheat to put the City ahead. Wilkinson equalised, but Atherton registered the winning goal.
There was little the first half to create enthusiasm apart from Medhurst’s goalkeeping. The visitors, cleverly led by a youngster named Bridges, proved themselves a nippy side, but often made the mistake of putting the ball in air instead of low. A drizzling rain made conditions uncomfortable, the turf becoming treacherous, and this was probably the reason why so many intended passes by City players went astray. Often the defenders, in attempting to clear, sent the ball to the opposition. It was well for the City that S. Robinson was as cool and effective as ever.
Robb could not be Blamed for being beaten after 15 minutes by Wilkinson who dashed through and shot to a post from which the ball glanced to the net.
The equaliser seemed a long time coming, and City defenders took a hand in trying to beat Medhurst. A surprise swift shot by Marley nearly did the trick. Eventually Foulkes cleared strongly, following one of the visitors’ sharp spasmodic raids, to N. Robinson, who centred for Brown to beat Medhurst, who could only get his fingers to the ball.
A little later, from a throw-in, Foulkes sent the ball well up the pitch to McPheat, who put the City in the lead with a first-time effort. West Ham undismayed, returned to the attack with renewed vigour, and within a few minutes Wilkinson levelled matters again, Brook making certain that the ball reached the net. The City showed determination to win. S. Robinson disappointed by shooting very wide from a free-kick near the penalty area. In the closing stages, however, Brown put in a fast run and centred for Atherton to crash the ball past Medhurst.
