West Ham, so far, have not made much headway in their Cup competition this season. Knocked out of the London Challenge Cup last week by Millwall, their Reserves lost all interest in the Middlesex Professional Cup, beaten by Tottenham Hotspur 2-0.
There was no mistake about the intentions of both teams from the moment they entered the field, it was to be a regular Cup-tie fight, with plenty of hard knocks and not too much of the science of the game.
The players were early excited or else Goodwin surely would not have missed that glorious opening when Mackesy had drawn Joyce away from his charge. But the fun really started when the referee gave a penalty against Rothwell. The West Ham players protested strongly, but a consultation with but one linesman convinced the referee that he had not made a mistake. Newman took the kick and Carter Saved, but in the meantime the whistle had gone, and the kick had to be retaken, and this time Newman made no mistake. Although the Spurs led at the interval, the Hammers had had much the better of the play, but their forwards were too light and rarely got in a really good scoring position.
The home team kept their opponents acting on the defence after the restart, and they soon had their opportunity. Bourne was going through with the ball, when he was tackled by Hobday, who cleared the ball but the whistle went for a penalty.
Now it was the turn for the Spurs to put up a vigorous protest, but this time there was no consultation, the referee being very firm that an infringement had taken place.
Irvine was entrusted with the kick, but Joyce was there and nimbly tipped the ball over the bar. West Ham rearranged their front line, but the new combination of Puddefoot, Mackesy, Bailey, Bourne and Goodwin was not a success, and the Spurs began to have more of the play. And the result was shortly seen, for Tattersall with a cross-shot, drew Carter after the ball, and Newman took advantage of the latter's absence to score.
