Thomas Ogden first established his tobacconist shop in Park Lane, Liverpool in 1860. When Thomas died in 1890 the firm that bears his name became one of the largest tobacco companies in Britain at that time. This unusual series broke away from the tradition photographic portraits of players when they produced a series of “Buttonhole” shaped tab cards, showing club colours (front) of one or several teams listed on the back, in this case West Ham United and Crystal Palace. The front of the card also gave instruction for use, to be either worn as a buttonhole team favour, or folded on the dotted line when used in a hat-band.
