In the presence of 2,000 spectators, Aston Villa played a friendly match at Canning Town. The visitors were not at full strength, but it was a fomidable line-up by any standards, the home team elected to play two reserves at full back. The game was disappointing on account of the poor form of Aston Villa, whose display was devoid of life. Jenkinson scored for west Ham midway through the first half, and he added a second goal shortly after change of ends, the Villa being beaten by 2 goals to 0 and became the first Football League team to be beaten by the Hammers.

READING : Southern Professional Charity Cup (Semi-Final)
Elm Park
28 April 1902

Cancelled

At a meeting of directors of the Reading F.C. on Friday evening it was decided, inasmuch as West Ham had not been ruled out of the competition for failing to play Reading last week, as they agreed do, the match in the Southern Charity Competition should be scratched. Had this course not been adopted, the dub would have been put to considerable expense, which the directors felt they were not justified in incurring after West Ham’s attitude in the matter.
Tottenham Hotspur defeated Arsenal other semi-final, and in consequence Tottenham being engaged on the last day of the season with Portsmouth, for Bedingfield’s benefit, it has been found necessary to postpone the final tie till September next.

West Ham United will play Tottenham Hotspur in the final next season 8 September 1902

GRAYS UNITED (Dickinson)

Play at West Ham, in cold and boisterous weather, before a small attendance. These sides met with a view to deciding whether Grays United should be promoted to the First Division of the Southern League and Brentford relegated to the Second Division, or whether the clubs should next season maintain their present positions.

Brentford had rather the best of a scrambling first half. Near the interval Shanks shot in, and Glieves rushed the ball through for Brentford, but the referee disallowed the goal after consulting a linesman. Shortly after resumption, Ainsworth scored for Brentford from a scrimmage in front of goal, and just before the close Dickinson equalised with a fine shot. Nothing further being scored the game was left drawn.

Brentford were willing to play extra time, but their opponents declined consequently the case will have to be laid before the League Committee. Brentford were later promoted to the Southern League First Division.
