A friendly fixture before a moderate company being present was decide in favour of the home side. In view of the important Southern League engagement with Millwall, the professionals only played Moore, King and Hunt of the first team. The match was well contested during the first moiety, but in the second West Ham, in much better training, wore-down the amateurs, whose defence was much stronger than the attack. The locals started well, as after Corbett had scored and offside goal at close quarters he registered a legitimate point in smart fashion. Just previously Grimes and Lingwood, who throughout the first half gave most trouble to the West Ham defence, got through, but Grimes spoilt a successful shot by getting offside. West Ham forwards were certainly the cleverer set, but so well were they looked after that they could not again score. For the greater part of the second moiety of the game the ball was kept in the Norwood quarters. Walker and Corbett worked well, and the latter scored, while a rush by Corbett, Foss and Walker nearly resulted in a third point, Stevens scooping the ball away as it rested on the line. Then he saved capitally from Hunt, but was beaten in a bad light by a fine long shot from Taylor, the result being a three-goal victory for the local team.

Some capital football was shown at this match at Leytonstone, and although each side attacked strongly, nothing was scored up to half time. The homesters pressed in the early part of the second half, but the West Ham got away, the inside left after a fine individual run scoring a pretty goal. Nothing else was done, and West Ham won by one goal to nil.

Referee Mr. Aylott never turned up and Mr. Patten deputised. It was a comfortable win for Millwall who were 5-0 up at half-time - through Wilson, Sharples, Carnelly 2 and Banks. Wilson notched the 6th with a shot that Monteith only partially stopped.

It was only necessary to look around the ground to feel convinced that the match under notice was only a friendly, otherwise considerably more than 3,000 spectators would have been present on a Bank Holiday when the weather was good, though the wind was more than boisterous, more especially towards the close of the game, when, as a matter of fact, the players kicked, and 'Boreas' did much as he liked. A grand game ensued, and the result of two goals all about represents the play. With the breeze in their favour, the United at once commenced to press, and within a minute of the leather being set in motion, a free-kick fell to the home contingent, from which Ratcliffe scored. Very fast play ensued, and close upon half-time the home lot added number two to their scoring account. Then Eardley sent the ball into the net for the Vale, so when the teams crossed over West Ham were leading by two goals to one. Within five minutes of the restart Capes equalised, and though both of the forward ranks went for all they were worth, nothing further was scored, the wind being such a potent factor, that accurate shooting was completely out of the question, the final result thus being of two goals all.

Grassam put West Ham ahead in the 10th minute from a penalty for hands against Durrant. West Ham's second goal came from Reid after Allen had created the opening. Grassam and Ratcliffe both narrowly missed, then from a pass by White, Coundon made it 2-1 much to the delight of the locals. Half-time 2-1 to West Ham.
Kingston, Durrant and Chapman all had shots at the West Ham goal without success. Reid got a clever 3rd goal for the Irons afyter the Stones' had failed to clear. Grassam converted another peanlty after Reid was unfairly charged by two home players. Leytonstone went into the defensive to stem the tide byt Ratcliffe still got through to make it 5-1. A moment later Reid added a 6th with a splendid shot from a Grassam pass.

There was only a small attendance at Canning Town, to witness this match, which did not start till after six o'clock. It was decidedly of a friendly order, though the home eleven had much the best of teh exchanges, especially in the first stage, when they had the wind in their favour. Child, the Arsenal centre, and the West Ham right-wing pair Allan and Hunt, were most prominent, but the shooting was frequently at fault.

Brighton started well and scored, Monteith letting a shot by Burge pass over the line. Baker had his knee badly damaged. West Ham, with this advantage, pressed considerably, but Whitehurst kept everything out till close on time, when Corbett equalised, and a fast game resulted in a draw of one each.
