WALKER Tommy [Guest Newcastle United]

Born: 14 November 1923, Cramlington, Northumberland

Position: Outside-right

Died: 13 June 2005 (aged 81)

Walker was recruited by his local club Newcastle United from Netherton Juniors in 1941, at a time when competitive football had been suspended due to World War II. However the club played in the wartime leagues and Walker was able to make 29 appearances. He also appeared as a guest player for West Ham United later in 1942/43.
Made his Football League debut for the Magpies against Coventry City on 11 October 1946 and played in 9 games that season. It wasn't until the 1949/50 season that he managed to gain a regular starting place, playing as part of a forward line that also included Ernie Taylor, George Robledo, Jackie Milburn and Bobby Mitchell. He made 40 appearances for the club in both league and cup competition and scored 14 goals in those matches. The following year, Walker played in every match for the club and helped to guide them into fourth place in the First Division table. It was also during that season that Walker won his first medal by winning the FA Cup, 2–0 in the final against Blackpool.
Despite finishing in 8th place in 1951/52, their lowest since promotion, Walker won a second FA Cup, 1–0 against third-placed Arsenal in the final. However, he began to find his chances limited and he was sold to Oldham in February 1954 for a fee of £2,500.
With the Latics he played 120 times, and when the time came to leave the club for £1250, many fans were aggrieved at the manager's willingness to let him leave. He later returned to the club for a second spell, playing 38 games before moving to Chesterfield in 1957 for £1250.
After a 17-year career he retired in 1958, at the age of 35. He decided not to go into football management and instead was in charge of a newsagents located in Middleton.

Jimmy Wray was the youngest of six children of a master chimney sweep. He learned shorthand and probably worked as a solicitors clerk. On leaving school at Didsbury, Manchester, Exeter's new centre-forward capture joined Norman Athletic, a junior club, which for three years carried off all the honours in their division of the Manchester and District leagues. Wray being the centre-forward.
Wray served in the Royal Flying Corps during WW1 as a motor cycle dispatch rider whilst having trials with Bolton Wanderers where he made two appearances.

In wartime football he also assisted Manchester City, where he scored one goal in four games and also turned out for West Ham United in season 1917-18 against Arsenal at the Boleyn Ground in a 3-2 win on 15 December 1917. Wray subsequently spent two seasons at Reading, after the war, where he played 19 games scoring 5 goals, then one year at Southport, making his Northern League debut, he played in every forward position bar outside right but could not find his form. He scored regularly for Chorley, after leaving Southport, before becoming seriously ill mid-season"

Signed by Exeter City at the the start of the 1923/24 season. He scored twice on his debut for Exeter City in the first two practice game of the season in August 1923. He did not make the league team at Exeter City though he was top scorer for the reserves.
He was forced to give up football by Parkinson’s Disease in his early thirties and settled in the south west, later scouting for various clubs. When he died aged 69, he had been blind for 5 years and hospitalised for two.
