PAT McMAHON

Born: 26 October 1908, Glasgow, Scotland
Signed: October 1932, St Anthony's F.C. (Glasgow)
Debut: 4 March 1933, Birmingham City (H)
Last game: 16 September 1933, Oldham Athletic (A)
Appearances: 17
Goals: 0
Transferred: St. Mirren (Scotland), 1934
Died: 28 January 1992, Wrexham, Wales (aged 83)
After leaving school in his native Scotland, the capable 'keeper had joined his local junior club Pollokshaws Hibernian and from there went to those famous star finders, St Anthony's F.C. from where he signed for West Ham United in October 1932. Previously the Saints had provided Hughie Mills to the Upton Park payroll and later Arthur Tonner also joined from the Scottish amateurs.
When regular goalkeeper George Watson was side-lined by injuries received in a car crash, McMahon made a sensational debut between the posts against Birmingham in the F.A. Cup Sixth Round at Upton Park on the 4 March 1933. The youngster stepped into the breach and kept a clean sheet as West Ham thrashed their First Division opponents 4-0 to reach the last four.
Although he lost his place against Everton at neutral Molineux in the semi-final, he went on to total 13 Second Division outings that season. McMahon eventually returned to Scotland to join St. Mirren and then moved to Wrexham during the end of the 1934/35 season.

A former coal-miner, Mangnall started his career as an amateur at Maltby New Church, then Maltby Main Colliery, Doncaster Rovers (no first team appearances), then returning to Maltby Main Colliery.
David Mangnall was turned down by three Football League clubs before gaining a place at Second Division Leeds United in 1927-28. He went un-noticed at Elland Road for two years before winning the managers attention by scoring ten goals in a single Northern Midweek League game. He made his League debut shortly after but nine matches later, one of which was against West Ham United, he was transferred to Huddersfield Town one of the clubs that had originally declined his services. The move enabled him to meet and gain experience from players such as Bob Kelly and Alex Jackson who had helped make Huddersfield Town a dominant force in English soccer throughout the 1920's although the Yorkshire clubs power had begun to wain a little by the time Mangnall joined them.
His five seasons at Leeds Road seem to have been spent partly on the field but mainly in the treatment room. He did however manage to play in every Huddersfield Town v Hammers fixture during this time and scored for the Yorkshire side in all but one of them.
In February 1934 David left Huddersfield Town and joined Birmingham, struggling in the lower regions of Division One. The Midlanders avoided the drop that year but were again in trouble the following year when Mangnall was sold to West Ham United West Ham manager Charlie Paynter signed this bustling centre-forward for £2,000 as a replacement for Vic Watson on 14 March 1935. The manager’s faith in the player paid off, as both him and fellow debutant Dr. James Marshall both scored against Port Vale at Vale Park two days later in a 2-2 draw. Mangnall set the Second Division alight in his second season at Upton Park when he scored 22 goals in 25 outings, and numbered two hat-tricks among his harvest of net-finding efforts. After scoring 30 goals in 37 appearances that helped Hammers to within a couple of points of promotion in 1935 and 1936, he was somewhat surprisingly transferred to Millwall the following season, the lad from Wigan Pier territory continued his happy goalscoring trend with the Lions.
In all bar two of his 67 games for Charlie Hewitts team Mangnall wore the number eight shirt but that didn't prevent him knocking in his quota of goals. Sixteen were struck in 33 League games and a further nine in Millwalls splendid F.A. Cup run which ended at the Semi-Final stage.
After a few months however Mangnalls relationship with Manager, Hewitt grew strained and came to a head when the player requested a transfer. This was refused and Mangnall was forced to sit out the 1938-39 season without being selected for First team duty. In May of 1939 he was released and allowed to join Queens Park Rangers.
At Loftus Road he played in the three Third Division (South) matches of the aborted 1939-40 season and played regularly for Rangers in the ad hoc Wartime competitions until persuaded to take on the Managers job in 1944. As manager of a Third Division club he added further to his list of achievements . When soccer was eventually restored to its pre-War format he took Rangers to runners-up place in the old Third Division (South) and followed this with the Championship in 1947-48.
Rangers and Mangnall found the Second Division a bit of a struggle. After a bright start the side eventually finished 13th in 1948-49 but slumped to 20th the following season. They recovered a little in 1950-51 to end in a relatively safe 16th, but plunged to the bottom twelve months later and were returned to the Third Division. Rangers’ misfortunes cost Dave Mangnall his job and he was never involved in football management again.
The Wigan-born ex-miner later set up in business in Cornwall and accepted an invitation to manage the St. Just Football Club, taking an honorary capacity.

VINCENT BLORE

Born: 25 February 1907, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire
Signed: Derby County
Date: 27 June 1935
Debut: 31 August 1935, Norwich City (A)
Last Game: 19 October 1935, Plymouth Argyle (A)
Appearances: 9
Goals: 0
Transferred: Crystal Palace
Date: 29 October 1936
Died: 16 January 1997, Surrey (aged 89)
Vincent Blore was a dependable English goalkeeper whose career in the 1930s took him from local Staffordshire pitches to the Football League, with spells at Aston Villa, West Ham United, and Crystal Palace.
Born on 25 February 1907 in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, Blore was the son of a baker and grocer. His early life was rooted in the rhythms of small-town England, and before football offered a professional path, he played locally for Uttoxeter Amateurs. His performances there earned him a move to Burton Town, a stepping stone club that helped launch several players into the professional ranks during that era.
In 1932, Blore’s big break came when he signed for Aston Villa. Although he didn’t make a first-team appearance for the Villa Park club, the move marked his entry into top-tier football. A year later, he transferred to Derby County, where he finally made his Football League debut. Over two seasons with the Rams the safe and steady goalkeeper featured in 15 league matches, gaining valuable experience and showcasing his reliability between the posts.
West Ham manager Charlie Paynter signed the acrobatic goalkeeper on 27 June 1935. Known as "Vic" by his Hammers’ teammates, he made his West Ham debut between the sticks in the season’s opener, a 3-4 defeat at the hands of Norwich City at Carrow Road on the 31 August 1935.
Although not a regular starter, Blore contests the first team net-minding position along with Herman Conway, he was a trusted squad member during a transitional period for the Hammers. The signing of Jack Weare from Wolverhampton Wanderer, another shot-stopper that effectively relegated him to third choice 'keeper. With the Hammers’ he added a further nine league appearances to his record.
On 29 October 1936, Blore moved across London to Third Division (South) side Crystal Palace. The south London club spent the previous three weeks persuading him to join them south of the river with an opportunity to play regular First Team football. It was with the Glaziers where he enjoyed a more sustained run between the sticks. Over two seasons at Selhurst Park, he made 33 league appearances, providing stability and experience to the club’s back line.
In October 1938, nearing the end of his playing days, Blore signed for Exeter City of the same Division. Though his time there was brief, he brought veteran presence to the squad and played a handful of matches during the 1938/39 season. His career, like many of his generation, was curtailed by the outbreak of the Second World War, which disrupted league football and altered the course of many players’ lives.
After retiring from the game, Blore settled in Epsom, Surrey, and became a P.E. and Sports Master at a Secondary School in Ewell, where he lived until his death on 16 January 1997 at the age of 89. While details of his post-football life remain sparse, his long life and steady career reflect the journeyman spirit of many pre-war professionals - men who played for the love of the game, often moving between clubs and combining football with other work to make ends meet.
Vincent Blore’s story is emblematic of a generation of footballers who bridged the gap between local amateurism and the growing professionalism of the interwar years. Though not a household name, his contributions to clubs across England remain part of their rich histories.
