When your older brother is the world's most expensive defender it must be difficult to avoid the inevitable comparisons, but the young Anton Ferdinand was determined to step out of Rio's shadow and carve a place for himself in the Premiership.

West Ham United manager Glenn Roeder offered him a professional contract at the age of 17, the same week in which his older brother completed his £30 million move to Manchester United. Ferdinand stepped into training, working alongside the likes of Paolo Di Canio and Frederic Kanoute, and after seeing huge improvements in his game over the previous six months, Roeder felt it was time for the youngster to make the step up to professional level and rewarded him with a three-year deal. Ferdinand, who could play centre-back or right-back became the latest product of West Ham's celebrated Youth Academy.

On 9 August 2003, at the start of their Nationwide Championship campaign at Deepdale, Ferdinand made his first-team debut in the 2-1 win against Preston North End. In the 2004/05 season under Alan Pardew, he cemented his first team place with several key performances, including scoring the opening goal on the final day as the Hammers beat Watford 2-1 as the Hammers booked a play-off spot and went on to beat Preston North End in the Millennium Stadium final, earning them promotion back into the Premier League after an absence of two years.

In the 2006 FA Cup Final against Liverpool in Cardiff, with the two sides locked at 3-3, Ferdinand fell to his knees in tears after missing the decisive penalty in the shootout. Although not on the scoresheet that often, one goal that always gives him great pleasure was scoring against his brother Rio on the 29 December 2007 in the Premier League 2-1 win against Manchester United at Upton Park.

The Academy of Football graduate played 163 times in Claret and Blue before signing for Sunderland on 27 August 2008. The 23-year-old signed for an undisclosed fee reported to be around £8 million, the Tyne and Wear club were managed by Roy Keane at the time. The Hammers accepted the bid after failing to reach agreement with the defender over a new long-term contract. However with the arrival of Steve Bruce as their new manager, he quickly fell out of favour and his first team opportunities became limited.

On 31 August 2011 Sunderland accepted a bid from Queen Park Rangers. With the west London side he made 44 league appearances before the Hoops released him in an effort to cut costs, having been relegated to the Championship.

Ferdinand had a short spell with Turkish side Antalyaspor before joining Reading for two seasons, then another couple for Southend United before seeing out his playing days with St Mirren north of the border.

Veteran midfielder Robert Lee fulfilled a boyhood dream by playing for West Ham United after impressing manager Glenn Roeder during July’s pre-season friendlies. Lee aged 37, put pen to paper on his Hammers career on 2 August 2003.

The midfielder began his youth career with local side Hornchurch and played in their first team at the age of 15 in pre-season friendlies. Hornchurch wanted Lee to sign a contract, but Charlton Athletic stepped in and offered him an academy place. He went on to establish himself in the Second Division sides’ first team by the 1984/85 season. He rapidly became the Addick’s star player as a winger and helped them to promotion at the end of the 1985/86 season and gained international recognition at under-21 level.

In four seasons he made over 350 appearances for the Addicts before joining Newcastle United in September 1992 for £700,000. In his first season he helped the Magpies to promotion to the Premier League scoring 10 goals from 36 matches.

Establishing him as one of the game's strongest and most competitive midfielders and was awarded most of his 21 England caps while at St. James' Park. Lee called time on successful ten years on Tyneside to join struggling Derby County in February 2002 for a transfer fee of £250,000. Following a short, unsuccessful spell with the Rams, which saw them relegated from the Premier League, Lee now out of contract, signed for West Ham on a one-year deal, making his Hammers bow on 9 August 2003 in the opening day Championship 2-1 victory against Preston North End at Deepdale.

His Hammers career was plagued as he missed most of the season through injury; he made 14 senior and five substitute appearances for the Club before being released at the end of his contract on 3 June 2004. He later had trials with Oldham Athletic before signing for former Arsenal captain Tony Adams at Wycombe Wanderers. He played two seasons in League Two with the Chairboys, before retiring from playing in June 2006.

Son of former Manchester City and Norwich City star winger Ian Mellor. Mellor progressed through the ranks at Anfield scoring 20 goals from the reserve team. A big, strong, competitive striker, who was exceptional in the air and worked extremely hard for his team-mates. Described by Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier as a “goal-machine”.

The striker joined the Hammers on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool on 7 August 2003 and made his West Ham United bow two days later under new manager Glenn Roeder in the opening Nationwide First Division fixture 3-1 victory against Preston North End at Deepdale.

Mellor’s only goals for the Hammers came in the 3–0 win over Crystal Palace at the end of September, but an injury hit spell at Upton Park plus playing under three different managers (Glenn Roeder, Trevor Brooking and Alan Pardew) as well as being forced to play out of position, proved unsettling. Mellor curtailed his loan period at the Boleyn Ground and returned to Anfield in March 2004 where he hit 10 goals in just four games for the reserves.

In August 2006 he signed for Preston North End on a three-year contract. Injuries plagued his time at Deepdale and on 2 July 2010 he signed on a year-long loan with Sheffield Wednesday making 33 league appearances and scoring 13 goals. Returning to Preston he scored on the opening day of the 2011-12 season and by December of that season he picked up a knee injury which ultimately ended his playing days, on the 9 May 2012 after a combined total 130 league games and 38 goals at Deepdale he announced his retirement.

Highly-rated young prospect who became Glenn Roeder’s first summer signing 26 June 2002. 18-year-old French youth international arrived on a free transfer from Auxerre thanks to the odd rules concerning transfers between countries at that time.

Considered to be one of France’s leading lights in the development of youth football. Roeder promised to give him the same fast track into the matchday squad as Jermain Defoe. In reality his opportunities were rare however and he made only two appearances for West Ham, as a substitute in a 2-1 away win against Preston North End at Deepdale 9 August 2003, and in a 3-1 win over Rushden & Diamond in the first round of the League Cup.

He was loaned to Lille in January 2004 until the end of the 2003-04 season, and to Notts County on a one-month loan deal in September 2004, where he made three appearances, scoring one goal. He then joined Dutch club Roda JC on loan through January-May 2005, where he made three substitute appearances.

Despite playing in pre-season games, he was not given a squad number by West Ham for the 2005-06 season and his contract was terminated by mutual consent in August 2005.

After trials with MK Dons and Coventry City, he joined Coventry on non-contract terms in October 2005. However, he made only one substitute appearance for the Highfield Road club before being released in January 2006. The nomadic striker then toured the lower league’s of Belgium, Germany, France and Algeria.
