West Ham United opened their 2026/27 WSL campaign with a bruising 3–1 defeat at Tottenham, undone by sharp finishing and a ruthless home side at BetWright Stadium.
The Hammers actually began on the front foot, enjoying early possession and carving out half-chances through Riko Ueki and the lively left‑side pairing of Nadine Riesen and Viviane Asseyi. But Spurs struck first: Signe Gaupset pounced on Julie Blakstad’s knockdown and steered a volley in off the post. West Ham responded with intent – Katie Zelem stinging Lize Kop’s palms and Yu Endo stretching for a back‑post chance – yet the hosts doubled their lead when Gaupset slid in Kirsty Hanson, who finished coolly beyond Constance Picaud‑Inconnu.
Tottenham tightened their grip after the break, forcing saves from Picaud‑Inconnu and threatening repeatedly down the right. Hanson eventually sealed the contest with a curling left‑footer into the top corner.
Rita Guarino’s side kept pushing, debutant Kelly Gago adding presence up front, and Asseyi driving at Spurs whenever space appeared. Their persistence earned a late reward when Saki Kumagai slipped Asseyi through to flick home in stoppage time – a neat finish, but only consolation on a tough opening afternoon.

West Ham United Women claimed their first win of the 2026/27 campaign with a sharp, full‑throttle 2‑1 victory over London City Lionesses, a performance built on intensity, discipline and two moments of ruthless finishing from Kelly Gago and Viviane Asseyi.
Guarino’s side tore into the contest from the off, pressing with bite and pinning the visitors back in the east‑London heat. Zelem and Kumagai dictated the rhythm, Belloumou and Riesen stretched the flanks, and the Claret and Blue Army roared their approval as chance after chance rolled in. Picaud‑Inconnu kept things tidy at the other end, denying Kafaji twice and reacting sharply to thwart Van de Donk.
The breakthrough came on 21 minutes, carved from Piubel’s grit in midfield and Gago’s cool head in the box. Released clean through, the No11 rounded Lete with ease and tucked home. Three minutes after the restart, West Ham struck again: Ueki’s slide-rule pass sent Asseyi racing clear, and she hammered in at the near post.
Van de Donk’s neat flick on 74 minutes tightened the scoreline and sparked late pressure, but West Ham held firm. Wandeler went close to adding a third, and after seven tense minutes of stoppage time, the whistle confirmed a deserved, hard-earned first three points of the season.

West Ham United Women were stung at the death, falling 1–0 to Everton after a stoppage‑time header from Laia Codina snatched the points at Victoria Road.
The Hammers had shaded the better moments of the first half, growing into the game after a quiet opening. Asseyi and Gago combined sharply down the left to force a corner, Zelem’s delivery flashing just wide off Codina’s head. Everton threatened through Vignola, but the match paused on 13 minutes for a warm, united tribute to former manager Matt Beard - a moment that seemed to lift the home side.
From there, West Ham pressed on. Asseyi tested Brosnan, Ueki burst through one‑on‑one but lifted her finish over, and Gago drove at her former club only to fire straight at the keeper. Everton responded after the break, forcing Picaud‑Inconnu into sharp work from corners and crosses, though Salmon’s introduction briefly swung momentum back the Irons’ way.
The final stretch belonged to the visitors. Kramžar and Momiki both went close, Wheeler headed straight at Picaud‑Inconnu, and with seconds remaining, Momiki’s inswinging free‑kick found Codina, whose glancing header settled the contest. A harsh ending to a committed West Ham display, undone only by the final act.

West Ham United Women opened their Subway Players Cup campaign with a composed, hard‑edged penalty‑shootout win over Tottenham after a goalless but lively 90 minutes at BetWright Stadium.
The Hammers were the sharper side throughout, Asseyi’s set‑piece craft and Salmon’s direct running repeatedly troubling Spurs. Kumagai came closest in the first half, stretching to turn an Asseyi free‑kick on target only for Panengstuen to save with her feet, while Wandeler and Gago also tested the goalkeeper. Asseyi even curled home just before the interval, only for an offside flag to halt celebrations.
Guarino’s changes at the break injected fresh tempo, and ten minutes into the second half West Ham carved the move of the match: Wandeler’s flick, Piubel’s threaded pass, Salmon bursting clear - her finish drifting agonisingly wide. Spurs responded with a triple substitution, Gaupset forcing Picaud‑Inconnu into a low stop, but West Ham soon regained control. Zelem’s free‑kick caused chaos, Panengstuen spilled, and Gago’s point‑blank effort cannoned off Sombath and onto the post.
Both sides struck the woodwork late on — Martinez for Spurs, Gago earlier for West Ham - before Codina’s superb block ensured penalties. From there, the Irons were ice‑cold: Zelem, Nyström, Gago and Codina all converted, while two Spurs misses sealed a deserved extra point.

West Ham United Women slipped to a narrow 2–1 defeat at Manchester United, a late Viviane Asseyi penalty offering hope but not enough to overturn the hosts’ two‑goal lead at Progress With Unity Stadium.
The Hammers began brightly, pressing high and unsettling United, but an early corner undid that good work. Sandberg’s inswinger found Elizabeth Terland, who steered a firm header into the far corner on nine minutes. Rather than retreat, West Ham responded with purpose. Siren, restored to the XI, hunted alongside Gago out of possession, repeatedly forcing turnovers. Asseyi twice went close - one curler shaving the near post, another drifting wide after Gago’s neat flick - while Piubel also threatened from range.
United rallied before the interval, Picaud‑Inconnu saving well from Toone and producing a superb reflex stop to deny Lundkvist’s point‑blank header. The second half began in a blur, Medina Martín clipping the bar within seconds and Park firing into the side netting. Picaud‑Inconnu then clawed away another Terland header, but United’s pressure eventually told when Medina Martín curled home their second.
West Ham kept swinging, Cascarino forcing Tullis‑Joyce into a tip‑over and Asseyi testing the keeper again before winning a stoppage‑time penalty she dispatched coolly. The Irons pushed for an equaliser in the dying moments, but United held firm to take the points.

West Ham United Women overturned an early setback to beat Southampton 3–1 in the Subway Players Cup, a comeback powered by control, patience and a ruthless second‑half surge.
The night began awkwardly: just two minutes in, former Hammer Emma Harries slipped Ellie Brazil through, and her clipped finish sailed over Picaud‑Inconnu. But from that moment on, West Ham dominated. Gago twice broke in behind, Piubel’s cut‑back for Tennebø was blocked on the line, and Picaud‑Inconnu denied Brazil brilliantly at the other end. The turning point arrived when Piubel rounded Santos, only to be brought down on the edge of the box — the Saints keeper shown a straight red. Belloumou struck the bar from the resulting free‑kick as the pressure mounted.
The second half belonged entirely to the Irons. Siren won a penalty but Gago’s effort was saved; no matter — from the ensuing corner Siren swivelled home the equaliser. Moments later Belloumou danced down the left and delivered a perfect cross for Wandeler to nod in at the back post. West Ham kept their foot down, and Siren soon added her second from close range to seal the turnaround. Öztaş impressed on debut, Riesen went close late on, and the final whistle confirmed a deserved, authoritative first three points of the competition.

West Ham United Women were beaten 3–0 by a clinical, controlled Chelsea side at Victoria Road, the Blues making the most of their few chances while dictating the tempo throughout.
Chelsea dominated the first half, monopolising possession and carving out openings. Nüsken should have struck early, firing over from close range, while Codina and Zelem produced key interventions to keep the visitors at bay. West Ham’s attacking moments were fleeting but spirited - Asseyi and Gago worked tirelessly to link play, and a neat move involving Riesen and Piubel almost sent Asseyi through before Buurman stepped in.
The pressure eventually told seven minutes before the break. Nüsken burst into the box and slipped the ball to Malard, who finished sharply into the bottom corner. Malard then went close again, bending a strike just wide.
Chelsea maintained their grip after the interval, forcing West Ham to chase shadows. Walsh twice threatened - first poking wide, then curling against the post - before Picaud‑Inconnu denied Buchanan from close range. With ten minutes left, Walsh finally found the bottom corner with a crisp drive from the edge of the box.
Hamano’s late header sealed the result, the ball looping kindly to the back post for her to nod home, rounding off a polished Chelsea performance and a difficult afternoon for the Irons.
Chelsea:
Hampton, Carpenter, Buurman (Björn), Nüsken (Potter), Malard (Beever-Jones), Baltimore (Thompson), Kaptein, Walsh, Bronze, Hamano, Buchanan (McCabe)
