West Ham United U21s opened their National League Cup campaign with a gritty, come‑from‑behind 2–1 win at Worthing, turning the tie on its head with two sharp second‑half goals from Josh Landers and Ryan Battrum.
The young Hammers started brightly, Battrum flashing a diving header just wide from Junior Robinson’s teasing cross, but Worthing grew into the contest and struck first on 27 minutes when Remiero Moulton hammered a half‑volley from distance past Josh Briggs. West Ham pushed back, with Jephthah Medine’s driving run and cross almost teeing up Landers before the break.
Moulton threatened again early in the second half, but Briggs and Finn Hooper kept West Ham in it. The turning point came when Medine was tripped in full flow, earning a penalty. Landers’ chipped effort was saved, yet within seconds he made amends - Medine snapping onto a loose ball and standing up a cross for Landers to bury a precise header into the corner.
Momentum flipped instantly. Hargan’s whipped free‑kick was met by Battrum, glancing home to put West Ham ahead. Hooper then produced two superb saves - one low to deny Harvey Boddy, another tipping away Jose Marquez’s header - to protect the lead.
Last season’s finalists saw out the closing stages with calm professionalism, beginning their Group B campaign with a deserved, hard‑earned victory.

West Ham United U21s opened their Premier League 2 campaign with a hard‑earned 0–0 draw against Southampton at Rush Green, a contest defined by organisation, resilience and two goalkeepers refusing to yield.
Southampton started sharply, twice working shooting chances through McMullan, Ehibhatiomhan and Dibaga, only to find West Ham bodies in the way. The Hammers soon grew into the game: Hargan’s free‑kick found Battrum at the back post, forcing Moody into a smart save, while Landers’ driving run ended with the Saints’ goalkeeper standing firm again. The midfield battle grew increasingly combative, with Southampton collecting three bookings in quick succession, and Robinson had to clear off the line when Adjei‑Afriyie’s corner threatened to sneak in.
The second half opened with West Ham on the front foot. Hargan’s corner skimmed past Briggs, and Landers twice surged through the middle only to be denied by Moody—first with a low strike tipped aside, then with a near‑post effort blocked. Southampton remained dangerous on the break, and Dibaga nearly stole it late on, bundling past Hooper before Leacock produced a superb sliding goal‑line clearance.
There was still time for one final West Ham chance: Murphy’s cross found substitute Dike, but his effort dragged agonisingly wide. A stalemate, but one full of intent, grit and early‑season promise.
