Elliott Lee made a terrific start to the new FA Premier Academy League with a hat-trick to see off a plucky Sheffield United. The striker scored three fine goals, with Kieran Sadlier adding the other, on a rain-soaked Little Heath.
Lee showed his intent inside the first 30 seconds, going close with a header that the visiting keeper only just saved with an outstretched leg. Sadlier then went close as well after bursting through, only to again be foiled by the Blades No1.
The deadlock was finally broken as the half-hour mark approached. A delightful ball in behind from Jack Powell picked out Lee, who showed great skill to control the ball in mid-air and then lift it over the keeper. The second quickly followed with Lee side-footing in from Matthias Fanimo's low cross.
The Yorkshire club improved after the interval as the rain came down on the Academy training ground. Jake Larkins was forced into a couple of smart stops but the Hammers rearguard, captained by Danny Potts alongside Leo Chambers at centre-back , stood firm.
Blair Turgott then took full advantage of a breakaway before crossing low and hard across the penalty area for Sadlier to sweep in the third goal. That killed off any hopes of a Blades comeback and Lee wrapped things up when he cut in from the left and bent the ball into the top corner.
There was still time for a consolation goal for the visitors, when Jake Young committed a foul but the goal could not dampen the mood after a superb opening-day success.

Elliot Lee made it a third straight hat-trick in league play as the Under-18s recorded a fantastic away win at Sunderland. Lee scored all the goals as the young Hammers won by the odd goal in five against a spirited Black Cats team. The 16-year-old struck a treble on the opening day of the FA Premier Academy League season last weekend against Sheffield United, having done the same against Chelsea on the final day of the 2010/11 campaign.
The visitors, who travelled up to the north east on Friday night with a six-and-a-half hour coach journey, were quick off the mark with Lee scoring inside the first minute. A through-ball by Kenzer Lee, replacing Leo Chambers who has been on England duty, set his namesake away and he made no mistake after slipping the last defender.
It was two on the half-hour mark. Danny Potts rose highest to meet a corner and head towards goal. Lee was quickest to the ball and saw his effort bounce down off the crossbar and go over the line, with Potts helping it on its way. It was the striker's goal, though, and he was firmly on course for another treble, having also struck seven goals in pre-season.
Sunderland came back strong in the second half although the Hammers were the first to show immediately after the interval. Lee might have got his hat-trick with a chance at the far post while Jack Powell also went close. As it was, the home side were next to score, breaking away to get themselves back in the game.
That buoyed the Black Cats and they were level with a terrific free-kick from the edge of the area. At that point it seemed that there would be only one winner with the Hammers put under immense pressure.
However, Lee showed great skill and composure to bag the winning goal as the match entered the closing stages. Picking the ball up on a tight angle, he worked his way into a central position before firing in an unstoppable shot. Sunderland came back once again but it was too little, too late for the hosts and the young Hammers head into next Saturday's derby at Tottenham Hotspur on a high.

Blair Turgott scored twice as West Ham United romped to a fine derby victory away to Tottenham Hotspur. The Hammers have won all three FA Premier Academy League matches this season but Elliot Lee, who struck a hat-trick in the first two games, was not among the scorers. Instead Kieran Sadlier set the Irons on their way in the first half before Turgott took over with two after the interval. Jack Powell rounded out the scoring in the closing stages for a second successive away win.
U18s coach Nick Haycock was rightly thrilled with the team's efforts at Spurs Lodge. "It was a very good professional performance," he said. "We scored early on through Kieran Sadlier and that set the tone. It was a strong team display all-round with everyone working hard to win the ball back whenever Spurs had possession."
Sadlier was not supposed to be starting but was called in to the eleven when Matthias Fanimo felt a tight muscle in the warm-up. The Irish youth international was quickly in the thick of the action, showing good footwork before firing into the bottom corner for his second goal of the season.
The Hammers had a couple more good chances before the break - including Turgott - but had to be content with just a one-goal advantage at half-time - and also coped with losing Declan Hunt to a knee knock in the opening stages.
England U17 starlet Turgott made it two on 65 minutes with a 25-yard effort before rounding the keeper soon afterwards for his second and the Hammers' third. The rout was complete when Young headed in but Haycock was just as pleased with the team's defensive resilience as he was their attacking verve.

West Ham United Under-18s made it four wins from four FA Premier Academy League matches courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Watford at Little Heath. Elliot Lee, Danny Potts and Kieran Sadlier put the Hammers in control before half-time with well-taken goals as the Hammers dominated proceedings.
West Ham continued to hold the upper hand after the break and could have stretched their lead but for some dogged defending from the Hornets, who netted a late consolation goal five minutes from full-time.
Academy Director Tony Carr and U18s coach Nick Haycock were happy with the performance of their players, who extended their winning streak to seven matches stretching back to a 4-1 home victory over the same opposition on 9 April. The Hammers are top of FA Premier Academy League Group A, having scored 14 goals in their four league games so far.
"We dominated the first half and did very well," Carr confirmed. "The second half we dominated without looking as threatening as we moved the ball a bit more slowly and Watford put a lot of men behind the ball.
"They managed to get themselves a goal late on, but overall it was a good win. We could have won by five or six, but any win is three points and we're on a good little run at the moment. We know we can score goals at the moment and are set up as a team to do that.
"We were 3-0 up at half-time and I thought we got a little bit complacent after the break, but we have won the game comfortably so I can't have too many criticisms of the boys."
