2018-19 Barclays FA Women's Super League
Manager: Matt Beard
Following restructuring of the women's game in order to provide for a fully professional Women's Super League (WSL), membership of both the first and second tier is subject to a licence, based on a series of off-the-field criteria. Yeovil Town estimated the budget needed for a WSL season at about £350,000. Existing WSL teams were first offered the opportunity to bid for licences, with all applying FA WSL clubs retaining their place in the first tier, with Brighton & Hove Albion from the WSL2 also offered a place in the WSL. From the first tier, Sunderland were unsuccessful in their license application.
This left up to two places in the WSL and up to five places in the Championship for applying clubs. Fifteen applications were received for both the top two tiers, and West Ham were given a licence in the second stage, so that the league is made up of 11 teams.

West Ham United pushed Arsenal all the way in their FA Continental Tyres Cup opener, but were edged out by Katie McCabe’s double as the defending champions ran out 3-1 winners.
In the first game of their new era as a Women’s Super League club, the Hammers gave as good as they got against one of the biggest names in the women’s game, with Brianna Visalli’s 48th minute goal giving Arsenal plenty to think about. At that stage they led 2-0 through McCabe’s opener and Beth Mead’s header, but West Ham were on the front foot for much of the second period and threatened to take a share of the spoils until McCabe sealed it for the hosts ten minutes from time.

Two finishes from Kate Longhurst and a Clare Rafferty free-kick were not enough for West Ham United to collect a result at Boreham Wood, as the side fell to a 4-3 defeat to Arsenal Women.
Longhurst put the Irons ahead with their first ever FA Women’s Super League goal with a header at the end of the brilliant team move, only for the Gunners to level minutes later from a corner, scored by Danielle van de Donk. The midfielder would net again, scrambling home after some terrific pressure, but Arsenal would be level at half-time after van de Donk put home again from a corner.
West Ham fell behind when van de Donk collected her hat-trick just after an hour, before Kim Little struck from distance to make it four for the home side.

It was an afternoon to forget for West Ham United as Matt Beard’s side were beaten 7-1 by a quality Manchester City Women side. City stormed into a 3-0 lead after just 17 minutes, putting the Hammers firmly on the back-foot and, although West Ham grew into the game and matched their opponents’ performance with a spirited fight in the second period, the hosts would score a further four times in the closing 20 minutes. Esmee De Graaf scored a fine consolation for the Irons on 82 minutes, but it was simply not enough on a disappointing day for the side.

Goals from Jane Ross and Alisha Lehmann saw West Ham United come from behind to secure a huge 2-1 victory away to Everton Ladies. Having gone behind to Claudia Walker’s fifth-minute finish, the Irons were on the back foot early on at the Merseyrail Community Stadium, but levelled on 27 minutes as Ross headed home on the rebound.
Lehmann would strike just moments before the half-time whistle, driving to the edge of the Everton penalty area before striking an effort into the bottom corner from 18 yards.
The Hammers missed chances to add to their advantage, with Ross missing from the penalty spot before Brianna Visalli and Esmee De Graaf both hit the woodwork, while the Toffees had a curling goal ruled out for offside, with West Ham picking up their first FA Women’s Super League away win of the season.

A spirited showing from West Ham United was not enough to hold off Chelsea FC Women, who defeated Matt Beard’s Irons 2-0 at Rush Green Stadium. The battling Hammers put up more than their end of the performance in the first half, keeping the reigning FA Women’s Super League champions at bay. However, Ramona Bachmann was able to squeeze the Blues in front on 63 minutes, after her first effort fell fortunately after striking the post, before the Chelsea attacker secured the win with a curling effort.

Goals from Alisha Lehmann and Jane Ross secured a deserved 2-0 win for West Ham United at Rush Green Stadium against Bristol City Women. Lehmann scored the first goal of the day, with the forward's deflected shot wrong-footing Sophie Baggaley to sneak in at the near post, after a fantastic run into a dangerous area.
The Swiss international could have made it 2-0 on 68 minutes, but somehow fired over from six yards. Ross then scored the second goal on 89 minutes to seal the three points for the Irons, as she latched on to a poor pass back to the goalkeeper and slotted it home.

Jane Ross’ second goal in two FA Women’s Super League games was enough to see West Ham United claim a deserved 1-0 victory away to Brighton & Hove Albion. The Scottish international rose highest to glance home her effort from Julia Simic’s cross just after an hour, following an excellent team move by the Irons.
Esmee de Graaf would also strike the woodwork while Alisha Lehmann went close to extending the scoreline. But it would be Ross’ finish that would secure successive league wins for the Irons.

Two goals apiece for Alisha Lehmann and Julia Simic, and a finish for Brianna Visalli, saw West Ham United pick up our best ever result in the FA Women’s Super League; a 5-0 victory away to Yeovil Town Ladies.
Lehmann’s double and a great finish by Simic in the opening half put West Ham on their way to victory, giving the away side a 3-0 lead at half-time. Yeovil looked to push back into the game as the second half begun, but Visalli’s headed effort put the game to bed, before Simic’s cool finish on 59 minutes secured a fantastic result for the Irons.

West Ham United were beaten 1-0 by Liverpool Women, courtesy of a Courtney Sweetman-Kirk finish. The only goal of the game came just moments into the second-half, with the Liverpool No9 turning home from close range after a crossed ball.

Alisha Lehmann struck the woodwork with a volleyed effort, while the Swiss international and Leanne Kiernan both tested Liverpool’s Anke Preuss, but the Hammers were unable to their chances, leaving the Reds to claim the win.

An Alisha Lehmann brace was enough for West Ham to beat Reading 2-1 at the Madejski Stadium in the FA Women’s Super League. West Ham United women's team suffered a late heartbreak as an 88-minute strike from Everton’s Hannah Cain won the points for the Toffees. The Irons dominated much of the first-half with the possession and chances. Kate Longhurst had a couple of half chances, while Gilly Flaherty had an attempt at goal saved on the line by Kirstie Levell.
Reichardt had the best chance of the second-half for the Hammers with a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area, but she fired in to the arms of Levell. While Everton hit the bar with an effort from Taylor Hinds. However, it was in the closing moments when Cain raced through on goal and slotted it past Anna Moorhouse that won Everton the game.

Gilly Flaherty’s first goal for West Ham United was enough for the Irons to secure a 1-1 draw against her old side, Chelsea. A disappointing opening period for the Hammers ended with the Blues a goal ahead, as Beth England netted on 42 minutes with a close-range header.
If not for the heroics of goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, the deficit may have been greater, with the No13 making a series of excellent stops. With the Irons just one goal behind, there was always a chance of a come-back, and the second half proved much better for Matt Beard’s side, as captain Flaherty headed into the bottom corner to earn West Ham a point.

Just ask the West Ham players who, despite playing over 120 gruelling, competitive minutes of action, sprinted the length of the pitch to celebrate with Cho So-hyun when her winning penalty found the net.
Just ask the over 800 sensational West Ham supporters that saw the Irons go a goal behind at Adams Park, courtesy of Rachel Furness’ header on 49 minutes, and must have thought the Hammers’ cup journey was over when the Royals were awarded a spot-kick late in the second half, only to see their side win the tie.
The home side broke the deadlock less than three minutes into the second half. A quick, clever free-kick found Jade Moore, who played a first-time ball back into the West Ham area. Furness was there, rising highest to head home and put Reading in front.
A poor clearance fell to West Ham’s No15. Her shot was scuffed, but then Visalli squeezed the ball through two Reading defenders, into the path of Alisha Lehmann. A cool swing of her right boot and the Swiss international had levelled the game, scoring her ninth goal of the season.
As the match ticked into minute 69, Reading had the chance to restore their lead. Flaherty was ruled to have handled in the box from Lauren Bruton’s shot. A penalty kick was awarded.
Up stepped Fara Williams. Adams Park held its collective breath. The shot was taken. Back off the post. A sigh of relief from West Ham.
The game was taken to extra-time. Tension began to creep into the air, and only a winning goal would snap it. Reading went closest and, if not for Claire Rafferty’s positioning on the goal-line, they would have taken a lead. Both sides were tiring. A highly physical contest seemed destined for penalties, and so it would be.
Up first were the home team. Substitute Gemma Davison scored. First blood to Reading. Then came Ross for the Irons. It was never in doubt, and the scores were levelled. The two sides seemed matched. Rakel Honnudottir hit the bar next for Reading, only for Visalli to miss hers too for West Ham.
Then the Irons took control. Adriana Leon scored with confidence to put the away side in the lead after Bruton missed the Royals’ third. Another shot each, and it was level again. Kate Longhurst’s performance did not deserve a miss, but the two teams were tied at 2-2 after four apiece.
Remi Allen scored, as did Flaherty, and the shootout went to sudden death. It was too much for Jade Moore, and Anna Moorhouse cemented her status as one of West Ham’s heroes on the day with a stunning save.
One shot, one goal, and West Ham would win. But a look at Cho’s expression, her demeanour, and the midfielder appeared to not have a care in the world. It was never in doubt. Her shot found the net, and history was made.

Ten-man West Ham United fell to a 2-1 defeat against Birmingham City at Rush Green Stadium. Adriana Leon got the Hammers only goal. The Canadian international opened the scoring for the Irons on 27 minutes with a thunderous volley from Kate Longhurst’s pinpoint cross.
However, the game was flipped on its head when Anna Moorhouse was sent off just before half-time for handling the ball outside the penalty area.
The resulting freekick was taken by Hayley Ladd and curled into the top corner out of Becky Spencer’s reach.

West Ham United’s FA Cup journey ended in defeat against Manchester City in the Final at Wembley Stadium. The Hammers had their chances in the game with the best chance falling to Jane Ross on 29 minutes, but her header was saved by Karen Bardsley.
City then got their first on 52 minutes when Keira Walsh fired a speculative effort at goal the Anna Moorhouse couldn’t keep out. The second goal for City came in the closing stages when Georgia Stanway fired a shot in to the bottom corner. They then scored their third goal on 88 minutes with a counter attack that Lauren Hemp scored at the end of.
It was Manchester City who looked to threaten early. Nikita Parris was able to get in behind the Hammers defence, but a well held line saw the official raise her flag. A minute later Ross was behind the City defence, but as she looked to cut in to shoot, she couldn’t quite keep the ball in play. Flaherty looked to assert her dominance on the game with a crunching tackle on Parris to deny her a one on one opportunity. Alisha Lehmann was proving to be a threat on the wing with her pace and skill, as she beat the wing backs on numerous occasions.
It was just before the 30-minute mark when the Hammers best chance of the first-half came. Ross played a great ball out wide to Erin Simon who put in a great cross to Ross, but the Scotland international saw her header well saved by Bardsley.
Six minutes later Lehmann had her claims for a penalty dismissed by the referee, despite the winger’s best efforts to have the penalty given.
Gilly Flaherty was proving to be a vital figure in the middle of the defence with another great defensive block to stop Jill Scott from firing a shot at goal.
The Hammers started the second-half brightly when Adriana Leon and Lehmann linked up well and the no7 played in a great cross that just evaded Leon in the box. However, City opened the scoring on 52 minutes. Walsh fired a speculative long-range effort at goal, that moved in the air and was able to beat Moorhouse.
On 66 minutes Leon was looking threatening on the wing and played in a dangerous and powerful cross, but no one was there to meet it. Four minutes later, substitute Leanne Kiernan used her pace to break away and find Lehmann. The Swiss winger could only fire straight at Bardlsey.
City then doubled their lead on 81 minutes through Stanway. She was able to cut in from the left side of the box and curl a shot in to the bottom right corner.
Hemp then made it three two minutes before full-time. A long ball over the top reached Hemp and she played it in to the goal past Moorhouse who was off her line.

West Ham United’s final match of the 2018/19 ended in a 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Brighton opened the scoring through Kayleigh Green when she scored in to an empty net after Anna Moorhouse came running out.
The Seagulls then doubled their lead on 39 minutes. Megan Connolly fired a shot at goal that went under the arms of the Irons goalkeeper. Fifty minutes later Brighton scored their third goal after some sloppy play at the back allowed Amanda Nilden to score. Then in the closing moments Ellie Brazil scored the fourth goal after the ball fell kindly to her after Moorhouse’s save.
