1980-81 Football League Second Division

Manager : John Lyall

After a narrow 1–0 defeat against Liverpool in the Charity Shield at Wembley the Hammers were disappointed to lose the opening league game at home to Luton Town. With Brooking providing the service, strikers Goddard and Cross began scoring freely as the Hammers went on an unbeaten league run of 15 games. In that period both Burnley and Charlton were beaten in the League Cup.

In Europe the Spanish side Castilla were beaten 6–4 on aggregate, but there were crowd disturbances during the first leg in Spain and West Ham had to play the home leg behind closed doors. There were defeats at Luton and Derby County but the team were still top of the league.

The Hammers marched into the League Cup semi-final after victories over Barnsley and Tottenham Hotspur, and in the Cup Winners’ Cup they knocked out the Romanian side Poli Timisoara on a 4–1 aggregate. Despite the shock of a 3–0 loss to Queens Park Rangers on Boxing Day, the Hammers were still on course for promotion.

In the FA Cup after two draws with Wrexham the Welsh side finally won 1–0 in the second replay. But in the league there was no stopping the Hammers, with Brooking and Devonshire brilliant in midfield. At home the team were formidable, beating Preston 5–0 and Chelsea 4–0. Leading 2–0 at Coventry City in the League Cup semi-final first leg, the Hammers collapsed to lose 3–2. But there was late drama in the second leg as Jimmy Neighbour scored a late goal to put the Hammers through on a 4–3 aggregate. West Ham contested the League Cup Final with Liverpool and after a 1–1 draw at Wembley it was the Reds who took the cup after winning 2–1 in the replay at Villa Park.

The Russian side Dinamo Tbilisi put on a great show at Upton Park, winning 4–1 in the Cup Winners Cup; the Hammers restored some pride in winning 1–0 in the away leg but bowed out on a 4–2 aggregate score. The team had not lost a league game since Boxing Day and after the 2–0 win at Bristol Rovers in April they were promoted. Five more games were won and West Ham were declared Second Division Champions with a record 66 points.

The Robins took advantage of a defensive mix-up to go ahead on 15 minutes, Tom Ritchie being the scorer. We had earlier near-missed a chance of taking the lead, but satisfyingly equalised five minutes later when David Cross headed in a centre from the right wing. Overall, from thence onwards we could fairly claim that the Hammers were marginally the more impressive side. Indeed, we were inclined to agree with the referee's judgement that Paul Goddard had made it 2-1 when he hit the ball into the net from Trevor Brooking's centre; however, a linesman's flag caused the arbiter to alter his decision because of the offside signal, so we had to be satisfied at returning home with our first point of the campaign.

It would be fair to say that last Saturday's match at Deepdale was not a classic among goalless draws. There were some interesting goalmouth incidents, but in general it was an encounter dominated by the defences, and midway through the second half there was plenty of indication that the score would be likely to remain the same at 90 minutes as it had been at the start. The first half was marred by four bookings—two for each side—but in that respect the game quietened down after half-time and the referee did not have to take further action on that account. Naturally enough, we were more satisfied with the result than North End. The Lancastrians could also gain little consolation from an attendance of under 10,000, a considerable contrast from the day when they were indeed " Proud Preston " and a leading light in English football.

During 80 years of Hammers' history, it might well be that our First XI previously went six matches in succession without conceding a goal. It's an "exercise" for the statisticians, but of more immediate concern is that after the home match with Shrewsbury Town our team had set that mark. There were several occasions when the Shrews might have terminated the run, and it must be said that they truly tried until the very last minute in a game that reached a high standard of entertainment.
A seventh-minute "own goal" got the Hammers away to a flying start; indeed, at that moment, the pseudonym "own goal" stood equal in our scorers' list with three players on the two-goal mark ! However, after another hour of play Paul Goddard and David Cross (in that order) had each registered their third League goal of the current campaign. Both were very well-taken, and it made our progress up the Second Division table a distinct possibility.
As events turned out we gained third place, and with eight points from six matches the team is showing the sort of form that one can expect from a club with prospects of promotion. The one sad spot of the afternoon was that Jimmy Neighbour sustained an injury that may keep him out for some weeks - no consolation at all after a bright start in his first League game this season.

The first half saw Coventry under constant siege and it was 'keeper Les Sealey, ironically the nephew of ex-Hammer Alan Sealey, who kept the home side at bay.
The opening minutes of the second half went much the same as the first period and it looked as though West Ham would never gain any reward for the immense pressure they had put their visitors under. David Cross seemed to have broken the deadlock after 50 minutes but with Sealey beaten for once, the ball cannoned back off a post. Eventually the goal all East London had waited for came as Cross, in the thick of things once more, found Paul Goddard on the edge of the area and he powered a shot into the net past the helpless Sealey.
Six minutes later, in the 65th minute, Cross turned from attacker to defender as he spectacularly cleared a Garry Thompson header off the West Ham goal line to keep the aggregate score level at 3-3. Both sides spent the last 20 minutes in desperate combat as Coventry chased after their first-ever Wembley appearance and the Hammers tried to secure their third appearance in 10 months. Extra-time looked inevitable until that man Cross held off a three man challenge to knock on a Bill Bonds free kick. Jimmy Neighbour, only called into the side an hour before the kick-off, found the ball at his feet and he hit an 88th minute winner past a pack of defenders guarding the Sky Blues' goal-mouth.
Upton Park erupted and "I'm forever blowing bubbles" echoed around the ground as the delighted fans contemplated another Wembley trip. Jimmy Hill said afterwards that he was considering charging West Ham rent for spending so long in the Coventry half and his manager Gordon Milne conceded that West Ham thoroughly deserved their win. John Lyall gleefully said that it was "the best performance he could remember." The Hammers were now in with a chance of bagging a unique treble of the League Cup, division two championship and the Cup Winners' Cup.

"West Ham belong in the First Division – without any argument," wrote one scribe on the morning of the game. Hammers were 10 points clear at the top of the Second Division and looked destined to return, but few gave them any hope of containing Dalglish, Souness & Co.
As expected, Liverpool took the game to the Hammers during the opening spell and on a slippery pitch, fierce tackles rained in from all sides, as both teams found themselves with just a split-second on the ball. After ten minutes, Sammy Lee fired the ball past Phil Parkes, but referee Clive Thomas adjudged that Colin Irwin was offside and the goal was disallowed, to the relief of Hammers' fans. Kenny Dalglish had Liverpool's only other real chance of the half but Parkes was equal to his effort. Hammers, for their part, were restricted to breakaways and on one counter-attack Paul Goddard volleyed just over Ray Clemence's crossbar.
The second half also remained goal-less as Souness, Kennedy and McDermott failed to create anything for Dalglish whilst Brooking and Devonshire equally struggled to carve out openings for Cross and Goddard. The game moved into extra time and just three minutes remained on Thomas' watch as the game exploded into life, enabling everyone to forget the previous 117 minutes of stalemate.
Liverpool were awarded a free-kick some 20 yards out. Alan Kennedy's effort thundered into the West Ham wall, felling Sammy Lee in the process. As the Hammers' defence raced out, Kennedy drove the rebound over the flattened Lee and past Parkes. The linesman flagged to indicate that Lee was offside but even after consulting his colleague Thomas allowed the goal to stand -despite vehement Hammers' protests.
West Ham pushed forward looking to save the game, and with just seconds remaining, Alan Devonshire's mazy run was brought to an illegal halt on the edge of the area. Ray Stewart's fierce free-kick deflected off the Liverpool wall for a corner. Thomas looked at his watch as Jimmy Neighbour raced over to float the kick towards Alvin Martin. The Hammers' defender nodded a powerful goal-bound header past Clemence, but as the ball moved under the angle McDermott punched it away.
100,000 fans held their breath as Ray Stewart prepared to take the last kick of the game and surely the most crucial of his career. Clemence dived to his right but Tonka' fiercely drove the ball the other way, to earn a replay at Villa Park. Justice had been done.
