A Pictorial History
1983-84 Canon League Division One
Manager : John Lyall

West Ham United’s 1983–84 season remained a vivid blend of exhilarating promise and painful decline, beginning with the most explosive start in the club’s history and ending with the emotional farewell of Trevor Brooking. The opening weeks were intoxicating: five straight league wins, fifteen goals, and football full of confidence and fluency. A 2–0 victory at Tottenham underlined their authority, while the extraordinary 5–2 comeback against Coventry—three goals in three minutes and a Dave Swindlehurst hat-trick - made it feel as though John Lyall’s side might mount a genuine challenge at the top.
The momentum faltered, however, with only one win in the next six league games. Relief came in the League Cup, where West Ham produced one of the most astonishing results in their history: a 10–0 demolition of Bury at Upton Park, with Tony Cottee scoring four. November brought further encouragement with away wins at Wolves and Sunderland and a narrow League Cup victory over Brighton, but Everton ended their progress in a replay, closing the door on that particular route to silverware.
Winter brought both renewed hope and devastating setbacks. A 4–1 thrashing of Tottenham rekindled belief, and a hard-fought FA Cup win over Wigan suggested another promising run. But that match delivered a cruel blow: Alan Devonshire suffered a season-ending injury, robbing the side of its creative heartbeat. The injury list then spiralled alarmingly. Paul Allen, Billy Bonds, and Goddard all ended up in plaster, while a car crash left Alvin Martin with broken ribs and Paul Whitton with a dislocated shoulder. Lyall was forced to field patched-up elevens, yet the team responded with admirable grit, securing three league wins and progressing in the FA Cup with victory over Crystal Palace.
The strain eventually told. The FA Cup run ended with a poor 3–0 defeat at Birmingham City, overshadowed by a pitch invasion that brought unwelcome headlines. From there, the season unravelled: a 4–1 loss at Leicester, a brutal 6–0 hammering at Liverpool, and a run of only one win in the final twelve league matches. There were moments of resilience—creditable draws at Manchester United and Arsenal - but the early-season sparkle had long since faded.
The campaign closed on a poignant note as Trevor Brooking played his final match for the club in a 1–0 defeat to Everton. Supporters rose to salute a player whose elegance and loyalty had defined an era, even as the season itself ended in frustration. A ninth-place finish felt respectable but hollow, given the heights reached in those opening weeks. The year remains a compelling chapter in West Ham’s history: a season of thrilling highs, cruel lows, and the unmistakable spirit of a club that fought bravely through adversity.
