Line-up Unknown

Our senior Youth XI contained several amateurs and young apprentices, the line-up being virtually a completely new one for the season. In the circumstances the goalless draw was a fair one, as the Reading Colts side which opposed them are new entrants to the S.E. Counties League.

Queens Park Rangers Colts had recorded an easy 40 win over Fulham on the previous Saturday, but they found the Hammers' under-18"s a more difficult proposition in a Division I game at Hayes Stadium, However, they managed to gain a decisive goal, and although our lads fought hard we could not dent the West Londoners' defence.

OXFORD UNITED

Bartlett, Smith P., Butcher, Didhams, Knowles, Tully, Westburgh, Thornton, Humphreys, Bedford, Durrell

The under-18 youth side secured their first win in Division I of the South East Counties League by defeating Oxford United Colts 3-1 at Chadwell Heath. Although our line-up included four apprentices we also had a couple of triallists in the team.
We were unfortunate when Carl Humphries hit the bar and Joe Durrell also headed against the woodwork, but nevertheless our margin should have been more convincing as the finishing did not match the approach work. Oxford reduced their 0-2 half-time deficit about ten minutes after the interval and gave us an anxious time for a little while, but we settled the issue with another counter in the 80th minute.

League fixtures temporarily took a back seat in the First Division of the South East Counties League, as the day was set aside for the First Round of the League Cup. It proved a good one for our under-18s, who beat a very useful Chelsea side at Hendon by the odd goal in five. The Blues are notoriously strong contenders in this competition, and the Hammers' line-up deserve commendation fo

The first of our engagements in the three major youth cup competitions was gained at the Kenilworth Road ground when our under-18's defeated Luton Town by two clear goals.

It was a First Round tie in the F.A. Youth Cup, and was the outcome of a useful performance by the Hammers. An "own goal" contributed to our tally, the other counter being netted by Tony Carr who had to subsequently be substituted owing to injury.

Our under-18 side defeated Fulham Colts for the second successive Monday evening when they knocked them out of the Second Round of the F.A. Youth Cup by a 2-1 score.

The young Cottagers made us go hard after scoring before the interval of what had been a rather disappointing game, but the second half of the match turned into a real cut-and-thrust contest which had the 1,425 attendance full of interest.

Our under-18's made a great recovery at Chadwell Heath, pulling back a 1-3 deficit to win by the odd goal in seven against Queens Park Rangers Colts. Rangers had previously lost only two games in the First Division of the South East Counties League, but this reverse has probably ended their championship prospects, and they could hardly have been too happy at conceding a couple of "own goals" among our four.

The main success of our Youth XI during the past few weeks was the 7-1 victory over Colchester United Colts in the Second Round of the Southern Junior Floodlit Cup. Clyde Best was the star of the game, as he netted four times in a convincing performance. Goalkeeper Philip Bonetti was not quite so busy, but also had pleasant memories of his Upton Park debut as late deputy for 'flu-stricken Peter Grotier.

Mid-week fixtures in the South East Counties League give us the opportunity to put out a stronger side than usual in the First Division of this competition, and we proved this point by defeating a highly-placed Crystal Palace Colts side by four clear goals. The only amateur in our line-up was Clyde Best who got one of the goals; Tony Carr also kept in scoring-form with two more.

We reached the Final of the South East Counties (Div 1) Cup by defeating Orient Colts 4-0 at Upton Park, and now meet Millwall Colts in the Final. Nearly a 1,000 fans turned up on a misty evening to see a game in which a robust Orient side held the Hammers scoreless during the first hall However we did extremely well later, and put the issue beyond doubt with two goals in the first ten minutes after the interval. Continuous pressure made further counters inevitable, and Clive Charles rounded off the evening by netting his second a minute from time.

Our under-18's gave a great showing at The Den on the Wednesday before Easter, winning by two clear goals in the first leg of the Div. I Cup Final of the South East Counties League. Top-of-the-table Millwall have been defeated only once this season in the First Division, and recently-published comments gave the impression that they were considered unbeatable on their own midden.
However, the Hammers proved otherwise, and goals from Clyde Best and Tony Carr settled the matter and hope to preserve the margin when the sides meet again for the second-leg.
