The second practice match, arranged at barely a couple of days’ notice, against Swindon Town to the County Ground, where the lack of publicity left only 5,500 in attendance. We began with Leslie, Kirkup, Bond, Bovington, Lansdowne, Moore, Crawford, Boyce, Byrne, Hurst and Dick, then freshened the side at the interval with Lyall, Brown, Scott and Woosnam replacing Bond, Lansdowne, Crawford and Boyce.
An own goal after 29 minutes gave us the early advantage, but Swindon levelled a minute before the break when Bill Atkins forced the ball home, injuring himself in the process. Tony Scott restored our lead on 62 minutes, yet the young Railwaymen refused to fold. Don Rogers struck back with a solo run and finish, and Roger Smart completed their turnaround with a fierce 25‑yard drive that sealed a deserved home win.

Charlton, turned out in an unfamiliar blue change strip, struck first after seven minutes when Dennis Edwards pounced on a rebound. We levelled matters in the 35th minute, Ian Crawford crashing the ball into the roof of the net after Malcolm Musgrove’s corner skidded right across the goalmouth. Musgrove was again at the heart of things for the winner, his strong run and neat pass inside giving John Dick the simplest of close‑range finishes thirteen minutes after the interval. The margin might easily have been greater than 2–1 had it not been for a string of excellent saves from Willie Duff.

We were delighted to accept Finchley F.C.’s invitation to send our First XI for the inauguration of their new £5,000 floodlighting system on October 10th.
The Athenian Leaguers’ supporters took to our play at once, even as the Middlesex club found themselves four down in short order. Malcolm Musgrove produced a blistering 15‑minute hat‑trick, with Geoff Hurst adding another to stretch the margin. Just as the evening promised to develop into a memorable exhibition under the new lights, fog rolled in and forced the regrettable abandonment of the match.

A crowd of 12,471 turned out for the floodlit friendly against First Vienna, and they were rewarded with plenty of good football. The Austrians struck early, yet it soon became clear that holding that advantage would be no simple matter.
Their opener came from a solo run and crisp finish by Veselinovich, the Continentals’ new centre‑forward. Our reply carried a similar individual flourish: Geoff Hurst took Phil Woosnam’s pass, drove through from the 18‑yard line, and buried the equaliser. Alan Sealey then produced another decisive run, drawing the goalkeeper off his line and leaving himself an empty net to put us ahead. Sealey’s influence continued, a neat lay‑back allowing Malcolm Musgrove to make it 3–1 before the interval.
Woosnam, having taken a knock in the first half, gave way to Ron Boyce, but the pattern of play scarcely shifted. We remained in command throughout, and Hurst added another before the finish to round off a comfortable 4–1 victory.

With our Football Combination fixture on 3 November postponed, we quickly arranged a friendly against Brighton & Hove Albion Reserves at the Goldstone Ground.
The Seasiders kept us to a single goal at the break, but once the sides turned round we over‑ran them completely, finishing with a commanding 5–0 victory. Tony Scott struck twice, Ian Crawford added another, and further goals from Brian Dear and Alan Sealey completed a thoroughly emphatic afternoon’s work.

When we visited Finchley F.C. on October 10th for the inaugural match under their new floodlights, the game was “fogged off” with the Hammers already four goals to the good after just 25 minutes. In those circumstances we were more than willing to offer a return visit, and fulfilled that engagement. This time the match ran its full course, and we came away 4–2 winners, with Ron Boyce, Peter Brabrook, Bobby Moore and John Bond - via a penalty - sharing the goals.

After providing the opposition for Enfield’s amateurs at the opening of their floodlights in October, we performed the same duty at the Brooklands Ground on November 20th as guests of Romford F.C. Appalling weather - rain and sleet throughout - held the gate to a mere 4,000, yet it did nothing to dampen the warmth of the hospitality extended to us once again.
We fielded a full League side, Bobby Moore absent only through international duty.
The evening’s standout figure was 42‑year‑old Ted Ditchburn, the former Spurs goalkeeper, who produced a splendid display in wretched conditions against a clever Hammers performance. Even so, he could not prevent us from securing a 4–2 win.

Four days of fog and frost again played havoc with sport, and West Ham have barely seen a ball all week—only fifteen minutes’ worth, in fact, before a friendly at Cambridge University was finally swallowed up by the fog. Ron Greenwood, though, remained philosophical. “A rest at this time of year will probably do a lot of good,” he reflected. “It’s only a question of retaining fitness.”
