There was a preponderance of young players in last Saturday's First Practice Match, and the teenagers among our staff captured the greater part of the interest of the 2,200 spectators.
The Colours' forward-line consisted entirely of amateurs, and the Blues contained no less than eight youngsters who featured in our Youth XI last season. It was certainly an "eye opener" for our future prospects, and we were very pleased with the display of all concerned.
For the record the result was a 2-2 draw. Wragg (25 mins.) put the Blues ahead, but Norcott equalised two minutes later to make it 1-1 at half-time. McDonald's goal in the 65th minute appeared sufficient to keep the Blues in front at full time, but with but two minutes to go Cooper levelled the tallies once more.

Our final Public Trial before the 1957-58 season attracted an attendance of 5,275 a considerable increase over last year's figure for the corresponding game. The line-upj were reflective of our First and Reserve Teams, and the score in favour of the Club Colours was a fair representation of their respective merits.
The White; were prominent in the early stages, but the Colours soon gained the ascendancy to be three up at half-time; Smith, Allison and Dick were the scorers. After the interval the game went more in favour of the Whites, and Cartwright reduced the lead for the final result to be 3-1.

Our Colts opened their 1957-58 programme with a 6-3 win over Bexleyheath and Welling Colts at Bexley.
This match was the annual early-season fixture between the clubs for the Ted Fenton Trophy of which we were the holders.
Bexley went two goals ahead early on but we evened the score before the interval. We then took the lead after the breather, the Kent team making the scores level once more through a penalty; but before the finish we were comfortable winners. For the Hammers Keeble netted a hat-trick, Woodley (2) and Moore being the other scorers.

This is the story of the two £10,000 debutants who played each other with credit. But the match glory went to a chap who cost nothing more than a £10 signing on fee, inside-left John Dick. Five-figure man Vic Keeble made his West Ham debut at centre-forward 36 hours after signing from Newcastle United.
Five-figure man Jan Schilders made his Sparta debut at centre-half three months after signing from third division club Volendam. Keeble won the dual of the debs with a most efficient first game but 24-year-old John Dick won the cheers with three good goals.
Lanky Keeble wasted no time showing how well that cash had been spent on him. He scored with a shot from Dick’s opening inside four minutes. Sparta then had their best 20 minutes of the match. They patten-wove prettily, but ineffectively near goal, and Dick put them two down with his first goal. Goal No.3, a John Smith penalty, should never have been, Referee C. Woan was anything but a Dutch uncle when he rules Malcolm Musgrove to be unfairly tackled. After the breack Dick scored two more.

Our second Continental visitors of the 1957-58 season provided 19,500 spectators with some clever soccer last Monday evening, but the L.K.S. Club of Lodz had to finally admit defeat by a 4-1 margin against a Hammers' team that proved their superiors.
During the first half-hour or so our Polish opponents had appeared likely to keep us at full stretch throughout, but although they succeeded in keeping the scores level at the interval they could not hold u$ in the latter stages.
A Dick-Keeble move ended with our inside-left bundling the half into the net in the 24th minute, but a close-in header by Soporck a couple of minutes afterwards put his side on even terms.
However, we again took the lead five minutes after the resumption, Grice placed a corner-kick to the edge of the penalty-area for Lansdowne to head it forward, and a header by Dick completed the move.
Then came two penalty-kicks. These were awarded for a foul and a handling offence respectively in the 76th and 81st minutes, and although Bond made no mistake with his spot shot. Brown had to follow up and net at the second attempt after the goalkeeper had parried his initial power-drive.
L.K.S. may have considered themselves a little unfortunate to be beaten by such a wide margin, but there was no denying the fact that they found the defence generally too strong for them, and our half-back line often turned defence into attack in a fashion which caught the visitors at a disadvantage.
Nevertheless it was a most enjoyable evening, and it marked our century of games against foreign opposition since we first played in Madrid 36 years ago.
