The Rangers gained a 2-0 lead before the interval and although we tried hard during the second-half were only able to reduce the lead through a goal by Albert Foan.

A good all-round display of constructive football brought us a 3-1 win, the half-time score being 1-1, after we had scored first. Our net-finders were Don Wade, Albert Foan and Doug Bing. Roy Hedges, the Dagenham Town goalkeeper, was having his first game for the Hammers, and he performed his duties in a creditable manner.

Although Fulham scored first our own team proved to be the more methodical of the two sides, and goals by Albert Foan and George Petchey gave them a deserved win by 2-1.

Our XI soon settled down and twice took the lead in the first half, only to be equalled on each occasion by the home side; the Pompey tallies were the result of an own goal, by Ken Brown and a scramble in the penalty area. However, we went ahead again after the interval and added another before the end to gain a 4-2 victory. This was the culmination of a first-rate performance, with our young side always holding the upper hand.

The Hammers' fielded three amateur players who showed up well, Jeff Rickard is a youngster from our 'B' Team, Paul Sheckles is at present with Gravesend and Northfleet, and Ken Burk is a regular member of Dagenham FC team which is doing well in the Delphian League. Harry Hooper scored the only goal after the interval in a game played under heavy conditions.

Four Amateurs played their first game for us; Burdon, an ex-East Ham Schoolboy from Manor Park is now on our ground staff; Marks, is the former Chingford Town full-back; and Reed and Haylen are two lads from the same local amateur club. Burdon made a promising debut by scoring our two goals which left the scores level at the interval, but the home side scored the only tally of the second half to win 3-2.

The Palace had a very young side on view, and they started off in good fashion by scoring first. However, they proved no match for our lads, and after being 3-1 down at half-time they returned to Selhurst Park with an 8-1 defeat.

The 3-2 result in our favor materially improved our standing in the table, and was a good display by a somewhat mixed side. Tommy Southren and Peter Burdon each scored once, our other tally being an 'own goal'.

It was some consolation to us to record a victory in the London Mid-Week League against a strong-looking Spurs' side. The only new member of our side was Goldsmith from our 'B' Team who has also played for Walthamstow Avenue. A goal by Peter Burdon was sufficient to give us a half-time lead, but the visitors fought back to level it up about 20 minutes from the end. With but five minutes left to play, Eric Armstrong netted the decider, and we gained two very useful points that leave us very favourably placed to go further ahead inn the table.

Before this match we were comfortably placed in third position with the promise that a victory would make us runners-up. These "castles in the air" were dispelled by a single goal from the Shrimpers.

Watford went into an early lead but we quickly replied to gain a 3-1 advantage, later cut down to 3-2 before the interval. Maintaining their pressure the visitors levelled it up just after half-time, but we came back with a late winner to gain a 4-3 success that put us in the runners-up place and considerably diminished Watford's hopes.

Holding the initiative throughout against top of the table Charlton Athletic, our XI gained a convincing win by 4-2, Eddie Chapman and John Gregory each scoring two goals. There could have been many more if all chances had been accepted, for among others a twice-taken penalty was missed. However, the win took us into the leading position and virtually put Charlton out of the running.

We had the majority of the play in the first half and changed over one goal up, when Don Wade found the roof of the net with a free-kick from just outside the penalty area. Brentford pressed hard in the second half, but Peter Chiswick proved fully capable of holding his charge, and there was non further score. This 1-0 win further improved our lead at the head of the table.

Watford had most of the play in the first half, but we held them to one goal, aided by some good 'keeping by Rex Manhire, a Falmouth lad on trial with the Hammers. The second half was a reverse of the first, for with the conditions in our favour we maintained an almost constant pressure on the home goal. However, it was not until four minutes from time that our third-string reaped its reward with a goal from Peter Burdon. This made it 1-1, and a fair reflection of the play.
